Ryder was a better tap ruckman than Grundy could ever be. Grundy's tap work is terrible. Just taps it to his own feet. Bottles up the game. Suited Buck's defensive game style perfectly. He's crap.
Marshall as a sole ruckman is a much better (and cheaper) option IMO

2 × All-Australian team: 2018, 2019
2 × Copeland Trophy: 2018, 2019
Herald Sun Player of the Year: 2018
2 × 22 under22 team: 2015, 2016
2013 AFL Rising Star nominee

I'd be more considering a decent ruckman to back up Marshall. It's pretty much the most important position on the ground, every team in the last 10 years who have gone on to win the premiership has had an A-grade ruck.

It's no secret we were at our best last year was when Ryder was playing and in good condition. His incorrect suspension and his injury stalled our season.

If Marshall goes down and we have no backup, or if he is forced to play underdone... then we may as well write the season off.

I'd have a very hard and long look at Brodie Grundy.
It’s probably the one position you don’t need an A grader, with Gawn being the exception.
Starting rucks of the last 10 years:
Stanley
Gawn
Nankervis
Lycett
Roughhead
Hale
Pyke
Gawn obviously the standout but Marshall is as good as Hale and Nank and much better than the other 4.
We need another 2-3 A grade midfielders, 50+ goal key forward and at minimum a B+ key defender.

Then I ask you where are we going to get .... 2-3 A grade midfielders, 50+ goal key forward and at minimum a B+ key defender. This is just pipe talk... they aren't available.

We played our best when Ryder and Marshall were together.

In the 2018 season, Grundy averaged 20.2 disposals per match; 525 for the season (48th in the AFL), easily the highest amongst ruckmen. Grundy is able to follow up his ruckwork and win the ball himself and apply tackles. He has been labelled as a ‘fourth midfielder’ by his teammates.

Wouldn't you also want someone who also brings leadership qualities and has depth of character.

Players, says the ex-list manager, also appreciate clubs trying to get deals done early. And sometimes bluffs can be called, like in 2019 when St Kilda issued a deadline on a deal for Fremantle over Bradley Hill.

When the Dockers dithered, the Saints, under list manager James Gallagher, used the pick initially offered to Freo to orchestrate deals for Dougal Howard and Paddy Ryder, among the five trade targets for St Kilda that October.

Gallagher was relatively new in the role at that time, but after proving he was a man of his word, other clubs knew they could trust him.

I've always rated Lachie Hunter very highly but he clearly has issues.

Really?
Because the only AA ruck to win a in flag I'm the last decade is Gawn...

And he was off the ground when the centre square onslaught started. I’d be pretty confident in saying it’s the least important position on the ground.

I'm not overly concerned with players with misdemeanors, look at Tyson Stengle... if Geelong wrote him off like everyone else did then he wouldn't be a premiership player, All Australian and also 4 goals under his belt.
Very true.

I've just always had this thing with Hunter where I felt we were a much better chance of beating the Dogs when he was out of the side.

The last couple of years he's had a lot of interruptions, personal and injury related. If he could get back to playing his best and cost nothing he'd be an excellent inclusion.

The difference with Stengle is that Stengle went back to the SANFL and proved himself whereas Hunter has had issues as recently as this year.

When Ryder and Hickey were together it was when we actually played decent match winning football in the last 3 years.

The team grew a foot when they took the field with him... that's a quote directly from our captain.

I would never dismiss how important ruckmen are to an AFL side.
