The last bit about "it is understood St Kilda would be able to offer De Goey a larger contract financially", and this is just guessing, but what if we ruled ourselves out of the Bowes deal (if we were ever in it) based on the idea of if we keep Hill and Clark, then we need an amount to cover off the draft picks and a contingency in case we need to increase the De Goey offer.

If we wanted results now, then you've got to take a risk and if that's going with De Goey over being in the conversation for Bowes and pick 7, then that feels like the right move to me.

Also, on the Bowes stuff, note that from the time that it came out he and pick 7 were up for grabs, Clarko became embroiled in some controversy which then had a knock on impact on Hill wanting to leave for North which has a knock on effect on what our SC position looks like.

Stop talking sense and spreading water on this Anti Saints firestorm Red Adair [emoji51]

Well I am really confused by what they are up to, it all sounds contradictory.

Specifically with Bowes, maybe we have SC issues, but with all the retirements and the offer to DeGoey, that doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe Hill has indicated that he wants to stay and go all out to win his wing position back and that has affected the thinking.

Maybe we dont rate this draft, but we seem to have only gone after one FA in DeGoey which is a long shot still as I feel he the Magpies will come to terms. And if we don't rate the draft why offer up Clark and say we only want a great return? What do they want? a top 5 pick?

Seems all over the shop. The post trading period analysis will be of great interest on here. As it stands, it seems confused and inexplicable.

I don't want Bowes, can we just concentrate on fixing our midfield once and for all.

Feels like a few years ago when we just keep on loading up on half back flankers, please can we just load up on options for our midfield.

We just make the same mistakes time and time again, the Ratten re-signing midseason and football department promotions based on completely nothing really indicates that we never learn.

I think the takeaway from the recent news that we aren't interested in the salary dump for Bowes is that Hill is going to stay at the club.

If Hill was going to get to North, then I think that would have freed up the salary space to take on the 850k for Bowes. But it looks like Hill is now going to stay after the recent Clarko debacle.

It also seems to indicate that we are in a genuine spot to get JDG using the money that we had reserved for Ben King. If we didn't go after JDG then we also would have had the cap space to be able to do the Bowes deal.

Seems pretty obvious that we can't do JDG and the Bowes deal. It's a bit hard to assess it all until we see what actually happens and where we land after the trade period. My knee jerk reaction is that getting a top 10 pick would have been an awesome outcome, but i'll reserve judgement.

Collingwoods IMO. They've got 22+ players that can handle the heat of big finals. I reckon we'd be lucky to have 4 or 5.

I think the quote came from Matty Lloyd, as far as I'm aware McRae hasn't commented on us specifically.

I think we can be guilty of looking at our list and comparing to another team's like it is 1vs1 in a training drill or a certain skill competition, but when when you look at the collective athletic profile for modern football (which is what gets you through the close games where the team is a bit off), we will be overrun by most, unless we expect Steele to be a freak every week and the forwards to kick straight. That said, Pies do still rely massively on Sidebottom and Pendlebury

We'll see how McRae is travelling when they don't win every close next season, as they surely won't.
Sure, they may do worse, but he’s got them playing hungry, disciplined footy with a sense of purpose and some young stars.

Are we anywhere near that?

The best way of fixing our midfield is through the draft

Getting an other top 10 pick would be ideal

Just go through the last 10 AA sides and tell me how many midfielders were taken in the top 10 of the draft

I wonder what De Goey's behavioural clauses are? If it's something like "no drinking during the season" and they're fairly restrictive I could understand the pushback even if he is a ****wit. But if Collingwood are putting in something like "If found guilty of any indictable offense, this contract is void" and De Goey's getting shirty coz he can't king hit anyone/his dog then he's basically just confirming he's a knob end.

Wonder if there’s any behavioural clauses in Slobbo’s contract?

Or how he’d feel if they were proposed… 🍷

Hindsight is a beautiful thing, but by the half way mark we thought we were. Commentators were talking about the Hill/Sinclair combo, our pressure was up and all was looking good.

After the bye, it was like we were a different club and we never really got that back, so the group has the capability of performing at a high level - we had some very good wins against some very good teams and our run home, whilst not an excuse, was disproportionately hard than our previous ladder position should have had as having.

1 or 2 wins different each way and we're having totally different conversations to what we're having today.

St Kilda being a top 4 side or not and it is something that has plagued us, is consistency - the best teams are consistent, they also foot the foot on the oppo's neck and keep it there until the bell rings, something else that we've not been great at and hurts our % as much as the bigger loses does.

As far as young stars are concerned, also helps when you get some handy father/sons on the cheap too

This is my my point about langauge:
Essendon headline:

BOMBERS GREAT “COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE IMPRESSED” AFTER MEETING KEY FIGURE IN CLUB REVIEW

Saints Headline:

“UNBELIEVABLE”: SAINTS GREAT FUMES AS CLUB PULLS OUT OF KEY TRADE RACE

These are one after the other on the SEN website. Now which one of these teams, both doing a review, do you think finished higher and won more games than they lost this year?

We are Car Crash TV folks and when theres not something dramatic to look at, you create it.
We have a lot of things wrong in our team and club, but Essendon is in a worse position... Language!

Surely that clause is already in AFL contracts. I think it’s in my work contract, too

Your wife is a journalist?
She has a byline?
Toronto Globe and Mail?

So effectively giving up pick 7 for DeGoey?
