Totally on the fence here re: DeGoey

I know he is dynamic and occassionally a game changer but this year he averaged less than 1 goal a game and around 20 possies - thats not very spectacular and doesn't get the juices flowing

Anyone care to argue why he is worth 800k a season on a 5 year contract?

I think they hope he starts to play like a fit Gresham and can roll them between forwards and mids.

I think impact over bulk touches is the latest trend so he does have some of that but we have a pile of mids that are all pretty good but I guess more is better. If he can ever become a more consistent player he could be a super star still. That round one game he looked incredible but he goes missing or injured fairly regularly. He plays with an act first, think later, kind of dare which is rare at St Kilda. His best is freakish.

Im talking myself into going hard for Henry now.

Get involved in the Hill deal and make it a 3 way for a future 2nd special.

Pies - Lose Henry, Gain Hill
GWS - Lose Hill, gain StK future 2nd
STK - Lose future 2nd, gain Ollie Henry.

Maybe put a few 4th rounders around to 'balance' it but that's a way better option than paying JDG 800k+

Collingwood, Ollie Henry reportedly "not overly close" on new deal as negotiations roll on

The 20-year-old is yet to recommit to the Magpies beyond this year.

I’m not expecting degoey to put the team on his back and single handed win games.

What he is good at is a point of difference to our one paced midfield.
Able to break the line when the oppo has heavy numbers around the ball.

He’d fit into our midfield like the last peice of a puzzle.

As for Henry he’s a nice player but small forwards are not a need right now.
And sexton is a spud who would have been delisted by lost teams.

Henry plays more like a tall. He's a bit like Fritsch in that he looks taller than his height or maybe Membrey.

We did invest in him. He was given a large chunk of games last year where he barely deserved them.

Once you can't perform there's a time you need to go back and prove you should be there which he barely did.

We we took the time to invest in the younger players that were more deserving in Windhager and Owens

I think you are a long way off the mark with your assessment on what role DeGoey plays

Is he as good as Petracca? Definitely not But they play very similar roles

He doesn't just go into the midfield on occasions

Centre bounces attended in his last 5 matches are 23, 24, 20, 12, 19

Compare that to Zuhaar 0 centre bounces attended in 5 games

Petracca 10, 11, 21, 12, 29

So in those last 5 games JDG averaged less than 20 disposals and kicked 3 goals

800k well spent I guess

I know they’re not like for like but look at the attitude of Hannebery; mentions regularly he regrets not being able to contribute as much on field as he had hoped and appreciates the club etc.

Hill has been getting played every week, no matter his patchy form at times and his weaknesses (yes, he does have them despite being elite at some things). Gets regularly defended by the senior coach in pressers, to the point the coach even blames some of the other players around him publicly, and is always given chance after chance, only to turn around and ask for a trade/meet with other clubs SUPPOSEDLY.

If true that Hill has initiated it, it’s a bit average to me

If he wins us three or four games a year off his own boot he's worth every cent.
That can get an ordinary team into the finals.
A good team into top four.

Goal kicking medium strong marking forward in the Membrey mold but 8 years younger and with huge scope for development

Yeah I think there was a lot of feel good vibe about giving Windy, Owens and NWM games. Not that it proved wrong. Not major impact numbers by the 3.
The main factor affecting Bytel’s selection was his injuries, that and his low numbers when he first came in. You’d have to think now that he would need to do something pretty impressive to get a game.
Coaches have fallen out of love with him.

I know someone who both works at the club and in the general media. They know Finnis and Lethlean very well. They know past, and to a lesser extent, current players.
And do you know how often they get that level of detailed information from (just) inside the four walls of Moorabbin? Never.
If you hear something directly from a player or their manager then run with it. Anyone else? I don't know...

We have Membrey and Sharman who can mark on a lead, as well as resting mids.
If he can take contested marks he might be worthwhile but I doubt he is much chop at that size.
Membrey has a huge leap, still doesn’t crash packs.

Never said Henry was no good, just not a need.

I doubt that is true unfortunately

It was the Pies that put contract talks on hold. I think they are just biding their time to see how much room they have and who else they can offload.

If Grundy goes it will open up space to give him a decent offer. If he gets low balled then he might come crawling to us.

They also have McStay, Taranto and Bobby Hill in talks with them so it might be a matter of wait and see for him.

I just get the feeling the ball is completely in Collingwoods court and we are just sitting their waiting for the scraps.

I just don't think the club would go public unless they had a positive answer. Why would you bring up the narrative unless you wanted to sell it. They've been doing all their work for over 12 months they'd know the answer and reading between the lines the answer would be yes! Otherwise why leak the club has green lit it..
