Unless it was 3 I wouldn't do it, and even then it was 3 it would be something that seriously needed to be given some thought by the list management team. Whitfield and 3 for like a 4th rounder wouldn't be an immediate yes from me. It wouldn't be a no, but it would need some serious consideration.

GWS apparently can't even stomach the first 2 years of this deal and we'd be committing to 5.

5 years of a million dollars for an outside injury-prone player who will be 33 by the end of it in 2027.

This sort of signing could genuinely stop us from landing Ben King if all our wishes come true and he wanted out of Gold Coast. It could seriously stop us from retaining Max if blokes like Owens, Windy, and Coffield decided to come out and turn into All Australian's in that time and needed a pay day thenselves.

5 years and a million dollars with zero flexibility because of the length of his deal and his age for an unknown pick 3.

And all that is hypothetical because they're not even going to offer us 3 it'll be 12 or 15 if they head down that road. I think its way too risky.

Based on what we’ve seen that seems completely accurate.

From all accounts the dogs team (sam power maybe?) told the lions pick 15 would be required for Dunkley so don’t trade it, lo and behold.

You’ve gotta think this damages a clubs rep for future trade targets. If the lions asked me to go I’d be very very skeptical based on this history.

What will happen is that clubs will stop dealing with Geelong and Brisbane and as a result players will want to stop nominating them because deals don’t get done.

This trade period could be a turning point.

I hope the Bulldogs, Magpies and Giants all dig in and refuse to trade. Sounds like Mackie and that peanut from Brisbane are doing themselves and their clubs a lot of damage.

It was set up for Bing.

Now ultimately. You can save it and go after say, Anderson.

But there are 2 issues. If he doesn’t come. We are in the same situation as now.

And

We have effectively ruled ourselves out of the race for pick 7 which actually hinders our ability to meet our draft strategy as outlined by Walsh if we actually find a target who wants to come and needs to be traded for I.e Noah Anderson

So what do you do…not go after De Goey? A free agent with so much X factor?
You make a decision one way or the other, we went after him and in this case we failed.
But does that mean we shouldn’t have tried?

Was my read of it given he didn't bother to tour the club.

I've since been informed that it's not Bowes not wanting to play for the Saints, it's the Saints continuing their inept management.

Bowes might be a spud (he was pretty good before his injury TBH) but he comes with a top 10 pick attached.

Given the club missed out on their big money FA target, doing a deal to essentially buy a top end draft pick would make sense.

To rule yourself out of that would imply there's another use for that money.

What that is, we don't know. There's been zero talk of us seriously enquiring about any other players.

We've been named in hypotheticals on Crouch, Mitchell and Whitfield. None of these would drastically improve the list.

TL : DR - Club isn't just s**t ATM, it's incompetent.

Fact is we have been in contact with DeGoey since drafted and told him six months ago we would offer 5 years. 3 months ago had to be ratified by the board, that's when the $'s were offered.

I thought Adam Tomlinson was excellent for Melbourne before he did his knee in 2021. Not sure if he can regain that level of form but I'd be looking at him if we think he can get back there.

He was a key part of their defence before he got injured, unfortunately for him that opened the door for Petty to take his role and he's gone past him.

Would be worth looking at if he's available.

Supporters are seeing the pick 7 and none of the other major issues with the Bowes trade.
Bowes is owed $850,000 x 2. Extraordinary money for what is essentially a poor man’s Dunstan.
Now, Bowes management had told prospective clubs that he’s happy to smooth out that money over a 4 year contract. So while the next two years may drop down to $700,000 odd you’re still committing extra salary cap to a VFL player in 2025/26.
Once we did the maths we just didn’t think it was worth the TPP hit to take on pick 7 in what is a very even draft between 5-20.
Irresponsible for not bringing in pick 7? Or responsible TPP management?

Gold Coast are pushing for a future 2nd in return for 7 and Bowes. It restricts Geelong's ability to get Henry and Bruhn however if that goes through as you can't trade your future 1st (say for Bruhn or Henry) if you've traded out any other future picks.

Good Lord hopefully they can bend the rules for Geelong for this year.
