The issue is they even lose NSW players

They have really let way too many of their academy kids get drafted to other clubs

They should be building a culture around that academy. Match the picks even if you think the next player available is slightly better

We have 3 of them in our best 22. Two they failed to draft

A lot of the NSW players don't come from the Sydney area.
People Albury and North ( Grass roots footy country ) of there probably don't relate to Sydney much, and have grown up watching and supporting Melbourne teams.

GWS is just as alien to them as it is to us and the people who live in West Sydney.

Blimey, it's pile on the Saints time.

TBH, most players are gutted when they get delisted. But you would think it would have been done in the exit interview.
May not have been helped with our president saying he is sick of mediocrity at stkilda
and our new footy boss saying there is a degree of irrelevancy with stkilda.

The afl pr machine is a behemoth .

Let's let our footy do the talking and brings back some saints footy.

We would be reluctant to do it because we ant to take 'our picks'? Is our 2nd better than #7 because it's 'ours'?

It's not that hard to understand Max.

Geelong had the inside word from early in the season (thanks to Steve Hocking) that GC's cap was overflowing & they'd need to lose multiple players. Bowes was one of the most likely to go due to the $$ owed to him & the fact that he wasn't best 22.

Hocking also knew that the AFL was going to allow more lopsided 'salary dump' type trades. So they put the ground work in on Bowes all season, knowing that it was his call what his next club would be (going as far as leaking stories about how highly Ablett thought of him & that Dangerfield rated him very highly- arse fanning 101 that worked).

Over the same period we were putting in our groundwork with JDG.

When the Bowes story broke, we were already committing our cap space to JDG & were still waiting on his decision. We were never in the mix thanks to Hocking's insider trading work (and probably our back half of the year too).

I don't know how accurate the club being scared off by the financial commitment to Bowes is... I reckon that's probably a bit of bum covering going on.

I'm sure we would have been balls deep if Bowes had shown the slightest interest in STK.

The commitment to unconditional effort is what we're missing.
Even Steele has started games without any intensity whatsoever.
The Essington game in 2021. And the bulldogs game last year. Both appalling.
And he's the best by a mile.
To me, it's the number one issue at the club.
No gameplan can be good enough to manage players who pick and choose their efforts.
Agree 100% they are just not "all in"like we saw at Collingwood for instance

Just some quick comments after trying to catch up on not much at all:

1. Please stop mentioning our draw last year. Our football was mostly putrid. Almost unwatchably putrid. The draw just meant that we got a few early wins on the back of a couple of decent quarters a game, especially while the top clubs found their feet.
Umittigated hogwash. The wins against Geelong Richmond and Froe were excellent and some of the best football played all year. We beat them when they were all playing good football.
If you dont understand that we had the fifth hardest draw after coming tenth the previous year you don't understand football. We have the tenth hardest draw and we make finals.

Calling it unwatchable is blatant rubbish and if you think that you do not watch much football. this is what makes the second half of the season so disappointing. The first half, we were amongst the best, then because we are so mentally weak we drop off like a bottom four team.

However to say the first half of the season was anything but good is quite literally stupid.

Very attached to it. Instead of using it in the draft we can put it in the cabinet where the trophy's are intended to go one day .

* GODDARD, * LLOYD and RAPHAEL CLARKE as well.
It's quite obvious what GODDARD's definition of Culture is by the way he chooses to kick his former clubs when they're down just to enhance his media career.
GOODDARD'S is the culture of one.... Him!
I loved GODDARD at the SAINTS.. Particularly when he struggled so much at the start... People at the time wanted him out but the SAINTS persisted.... Yet he can't extend the same gratitude despite his unfortunate finish at ST KILDA .. He'd be naught if we hadn't seen the possibilities and persisted. He owes us... Not the other way round.
Find it hard to criticize Goddard when he’s right. I love all this negative attention on the club, finally it’s not just a bunch of mad degenerates on a footy forum who are getting frustrated with the direction the club has taken and the people involved.

This could be the kick in the ass the club needs. All these comments and barbs at the club are true, with the exception of Damien Barretts. I disagree we need to bring someone big in to be considered not getting an F for the trade period.

Anyway, everyone involved at the club should be hearing this and using it as ammunition. Ammunition to work as hard as possible in the off season and use these negative words as fuel to move the club out of the irrelevant category it’s been stuck in for a decade

I'd like it on the record that I think, on top of the concussions, that the "he's just selfish" stuff got to Higgins.

IMO there are two ways Higgins can go: selfish, productive Higgins or non-AFL standard Higgins. I want him hungry for goals. We have others for the pressure and the unselfish stuff, but Higgins is a point of difference in his ability to score himself at that size.
Agree 100%. Also said that from the get go.
The small forward is absolutely the position to be selfish.
Imagine Roo, or anyone else, ever telling Milney hewas selfish.

Bit of a smokescreen to be honest. So what do you call getting Cordy then if no more major top ups?

Gags, Lethers and co said 2022 was our window... after 2021 was meant to be. We havent got alot to bargain with and players don't see us as a quality destination at the moment.

Gonna be hard to get to the draft and get quality with limited picks.

As well as all the bullshit academy picks, they've been great at paying it forward. Because they never had glaring holes in their list, they've never been reluctant to take future picks or to trade out fringe players ( or even decent players ).

They just got a next years second for Bobby Hill. They got Bobby Hill because they traded Setterfield, a 2016 Academy player.

They got 12 and 19 for Taranto. They had Taranto because they traded McCarthy to Fremantle. They got McCarthy by taking a later pick from the Tyson trade and bundling it with later picks like the Jash Bruce trade. So from their original concessions, they are still getting good picks in 2022.

They've managed to get great value from players such as Patton, Jacksch , Boyd, O'Rourke, Frost , Hampton, and Bugg.
Now currently 7000 points with hopper trade to come... could be 9000 points which is equivalent to the number 1 draft pick 3x this year alone
By comparison Norf has 3132
Stkilda has 3032
Plus with that many picks in the top 19 as many as 7 after the hopper trade they are in full control of how the draft will pan out

Love what your saying here fwiw, but neither of the the feline clubs were playing anywhere near their best when we beat them. Having said that they still had to be beaten.

Is Hayes a good appointment because he is a modern great?

Haven’t heard a thing about other clubs feeling like he is a big miss and he didn’t come with the outside recognition Walsh did.

Worth considering.
Well he's certainly not a bad appointment like Clarkson and the bombers CEO. My point is we've done some nice work the last month.

We've brought in Hayes and Walsh [emoji736]
We've brought in Noble to do a club review[emoji736]
We've said we're concentrating on the draft and possibly increasing our picks at the pointy end, which most of us agreed we need to do instead of trading for Hanners & jones types [emoji736]
We've picked up a 25 year old FB without using picks[emoji736]

You have this weird obsession with points, they mean nothing. Obviously they have a better draft hand than us but it's not because they have more points.

And where are Richmond finding 2 more top 19 picks for this year? GWS definitely in the box seat though, can 100% see pick 1 being traded to them.

5 picks for GWS inside the top 20…

Is it 2009-10 again?!

Oh… no… we’re still kinda s**t… so it ain’t.
It’s ok.
In two or three years those kids are all gonna want to come home.
