I would like us to be known as the salary dumps Saints.
We'll take anyone's trash for picks.
If there is anything in that Haynes dump.

Yes and I still think he would be a good player and role model for the likes of Coffield.

I dunno. I still think a fit Hunter Clark could fill a bigger hole.

Get both he and Coffield fit and nail our first pick this year and that's a big win in my book.

I'd look at other ways to try and get a pick in that region.

Yeah, realistically bringing in youth and playing them is more likely to give us bottom 8 finishes for a couple of years than playing experienced guys like Coffield and Clark who are ready to step up. Another couple of years of not playing finals is likely to see our best players wanting to go to sides like Geelong who never miss finals.

If you play Nas, Owens, Windy and 2x new kids that's a big chunk of the list that are not going to offer consistent performance. If we are trying to do a Collingwood/ Sydney and feed more youth in while challenging, they both had players with a few years experience rather than a pile of new draftees. Daicos obviously a bit different. Sydney had a a lot of guys like Coff/Clark -semi developed guys who stepped up to take over senior roles.

We sound like we've realised that we had the balance wrong but we could easily tip back the other way and end up in full rebuild instead of top up if we get it wrong.

I know some people here love to look at draft points so...

As we sit right now there are only 5 clubs that have more draft points then us

IMO that means very little unless you are taking academy kids with them, but we are at least in a good position to move up the draft if we can find a taker.

Shame we missed that Brisbane pick 15

We have more than enough to move up to their pick 19 though

They will probably need to use that on Dunkley though

That’s going to be needed for Dunkley will it not?

Which will then be needed for Lobb

And then for Jackson….

I wonder how close to the limit our soft cap is getting.

I’d just employ him regardless. If we need to pay a tax then pay it.

Premierships are won off-field. Adding both Walsh and Noble to our football department gives us two of the competition’s most canny and ruthless operators.

I don’t get this Haynes dump. Bowes I do because he has proven nothing and on huge money. Haynes for basically no pick I understand but why chuck in a pick. He surely would be wanted by clubs with room for nothing. I know he is getting on but surely it’s a great deal even without a pick.

I’m not sure it’s that simple. We get the most money off the afl of any Victorian club. Doubt they will give us their money to just give it back to them.

Because he is 30 and on 700+k apparently

So he adds no value to the future. The argument could be made he is on the down hill slope.

But for us, even 3/4 of his best. Is still better than anyone as an intercepting tall.

So Essnedon have young Davey Jnr looking likely for the 1st round

We could give up 47 to move up 5 spots in the 2nd round, giving them an extra 150 points for Davey

Might work if there's someone around that range we like

Having 22 might also make it a little more enticing for clubs with a late teens pick to trade down also

Umm…

Max King, if you are happy with the C grade version that generally has no impact on games.

David Noble literally called king a superstar. Said clubs double team him right now and he still impacts games.

I meant in his conversion, not like for like, drama queen. Some days he kicks like a laser, others he's kicking off his heel. Both him and King can kick 5 straight one week and 2, 5 the next.

We would get a better return than if we spend it on players.

Bowes was showing plenty promise before going down with a shoulder and Dew favoured him over Brodie over the years. Bowes is almost identical in every way to Hunter Clark, high pick, promising at times, playing HBF instead of mid where his looks a more natural fit. Some question marks due to injury but not really injury prone.

I think I'd rather take the gamble on Bowes than a 30 year old Haynes who was at his best a running rebound defender, kind of a cross between Dylan Roberton and Mason Wood. He's more athletic than most blokes his size but that stuff goes first as a tall power athlete and his last couple of seasons have been below average. Haynes is on close to $1 million pa too I think.

Whitfield is more and a longer contract but makes more sense to team balance at the Saints. If you could get them to pay $250k a year for him it would be an acceptable gamble IMO.

I want a pick around 13-15 to nab Hollands.
I think he’s got scope to be a seriously good mid/wingman. If it means Hunter goes out and we also get Haynes and pick 15 then sign me up.
I'm not sure I'd want to take on 800k for a 31 year old AND lose Clark for a pick in the teens

Take on his salary for 15, keep Clark

I think the some people are forgetting that Clark will be 24 when the season starts. That means he has had 6 years to develop his game to be a established AFL player that was a very high draft pick

We all the talent that he has and yes he has had injuries, but the injuries have been over the last 2 years. He is not a KP player that needs time to develop.

If you look a the track record of drafting these days - 1st year player's come in and make a mark straight away and especially for mids/halfbacks they almost instantly have an impact. You just have to look at our 3 boys as an example.

I think we need to cut our losses with Clark and hope we get a top 15 pick and hit the draft and get a youngster who can come in like Windy/Owens and make an immediate impact to the side.

I’m not really comparing him to the bowes deal. I understand that deal. I still think a club would take Haynes for nothing without adding to it. Every club would take Whitfield with nothing else added. I’d pay his whole wage.

Maybe but also remember Petrecca took until he was 24 (the 2020 season) to show he was any good. His output was probably similar to Clark's or even more mediocre.

Having said that Clark for mine has no time left after this season. Its make or break time now

It would be a dumb idea he's a heart and soul player and he's a lot better than the credit he gets.
Membrey is 29 at the start of the season next year. He might have one or two more years of reasonable footy maybe, but not any more than that imo.

We don't have many players worth a high first round pick, but he'd be one that is. Also, we have a couple of players that could do his role (maybe not as well, but he can be replaced).

I don't put much value in "Heart and Soul". The idea that the loss of one player is going to shake the foundations of the club is bogus.
