Go back 15 years .... we were in exactly the same situation as the Cats. They were diabolical and in huge trouble.

They have gone one way and made alot of good decisions, we however have made more bad decisions than good.

TBH, we only have ourselves to blame.

And halfway through the 1971 GF we were equal with the Hawks on one premiership each, they've won 12 more since then. We've probably won that many spoons since.

Bytel does have opportunities. He has the opportunity to prove himself as a best 22 St Kilda player at training and via the VFL. I don't think any of our young mids should be guaranteed AFL time. In this day and age players need to either have elite run or a penetrating kick. And if you don't have both you really need to be elite at everything else.

Surely the arrival of Lenny Hayes marks a new era for our midfield, and I trust Lenny to come in with an open mind and a keen eye. If Bytel thinks he belongs, 2023 at the Saints is as good as anywhere I think.
I am expecting Lenny Hayes to re-establish standards in our midfield that we haven't seen in some time ... I'd also like to think he'll be running tackling training for the rest of the list as well.

If we can get a 15-20% improvement in the middle, and stick 4 more tackles per quarter without falling off them, it will fix a multitude of our problems.

You know how many young defenders start out as good players. Very few
Rance , Eric McKenzie sucked when they were young players
Was just letting you know why they shifted him forward. He's was struggling big time at SANFL level so they needed to change things up.

Rance was slow off the mark but nothing like McAsey. Rance made the under 22 side and started showing a bit before he became elite.

For every defender that starts out poorly and becomes a quality AFL player there are dozens that just stay no good.

You'd want to get him for next to nothing and I can't see the Crows doing that

I think that had something to do with the zones back then, the Hawks got given one of the best zones which used to be ours and got a lot of the great players that built their premiership teams of the 70s and 80s. We got given the Ballarat zone and got a few good players like Robbie Muir, Tony Lockett and Danny Frawley but not many other players of note.

That being said the Hawks have still been more successful than us since the zones got scrapped and the draft came in but even with the draft system we still seem to be disadvantaged compared to a lot of other more successful clubs that get given favours that we don't get.

Yep. The Billy Slater training fell off pretty quickly.

Good, apparently Windy and co too.

Maybe the entire team was read the riot act at their exit interviews.
Come back fit or else. Then they can spend the pre-season on skills and game plan rather than fitness.

Hoping Bytel stays and shows us what he’s got next season.
Windy Brownlow coming up

For years I have thought to myself we need a Joel Selwood type player. Haven’t necessarily been a fan as an opposition supporter….ducking etc. But always thought I’d love it if he played for us.

So I wondered when we were getting our Joel Selwood. Think we might have him now. Windy. If he’s out there leading the way with preseason training early and others are following….. older guys. Well that is just great.

He would go some way to match Selwood in terms of achieving and that’s not really going to happen. But we need someone to naturally lead by way of example. All very encouraging.
If we could get in on the Bowes situation, then Jhye Clark might be a sneaky chance.

Happy for us to not be overly active and to go to the draft.

But if as Gags said we want to add top end talent then I fail to see why we wouldn’t be all over the Jack Bowes situation.

Just seems a no brainer, Bowes meeting clubs today suggests he is not fully decided . Would have thought Hayes would be on the phone to him seen as he was his hero.

Perhaps we are are after someone else from Gold Coast that they need to move on.

They want Long we want top end talent what am I missing ?

Something that frustrates me is the number of times we tackle without impacting the opponents ability to dispose of the ball. At least forcing a stoppage helps. It’s a small gripe and maybe I’m wrong or too harsh but feels like we could lift in this area.

Billy slater taught us how to tackle a while back. We were ferocious that season. Let him go over Covid and we became pathetic

Nope, you’re not harsh at all. We need some grunt. Don’t think our issue is disposal in itself. We’ve been “almost” all the time, almost tackled, almost burst through. Too timid, not strong enough.

I reckon it's balance, we need to attack and not always be trying to stop the opposition. We look like a side that is playing to have done the right thing n the match review, not go for a win.
