Another 194 defender that's not really a defender ,,, No just No

He's another like Wood who is a tall athletic guy not a KP. When he was a gun at GWS it was as a big high possession running back. Probably the closest thing we had was Dylan Roberton. Maybe a bit more adaptable or they used him in a more adaptable way.

Can people stop saying things along the lines of “don’t understand why we are not all over the Jack Bowes situation… it’s a no brainer.”

I’m all over the Scarlett Johansson situation as it’s a no brainer but that’s not going to change anything… Damn woman wants a bloody future second rounder headed back her way. Rates next year’s draft
If you are not prepared to give up a future second rounder for Scarlett Johansson then you should not be a list manager .

Top end talent and a steal for a second round draft pick.

Replace Lienert on the list? Showed at Melbourne he can defend so is an upgrade in that department while still having a huge tank.

Not sure where he would fit into the best 22 positionally but would make the overall list stronger.

We need another ready made option in case of injuries anyway I reckon.

Not overly keen on Ratagalou though. He's not much of a threat forward.

Schache is probably a good option as he'd cost next to nothing.

Ratta is still really young, at 24 and hardly scratched the surface. In 2019 he looked on track to be a star, he had a big finals series and was looking like he'd be a Tom Hawkins sized forward who could ruck. Then he did a knee and has never really got back to where he was.

To me he'd be the best fit for ruck forward and that's a need. The only issue is cost. If you could grab him or Weed without giving up too much either would be a good option.

I like Lienert and I think you'd still have to give up something for Thomlinson. As a defender he's still more Wilkie than May. This is one of those times I'd rather take our chances on a kid than try to patch up with 30 year olds with no obvious need on the list. Lienert is a perfect VFL option that can come in as a medisub or 22nd on the list type in case of injury. He's low maintenance and seems happy to just have a role in the periphery. He never embarrasses himself and has had some really strong games. Similar to Wood.

Bob Murphy said that he thinks that fans get shitty with Schache because he's a HFF or HBF in a ruckman's body. He says he can't play KP but his coaches keep making the mistake of trying to turn him into one. He suffered from what Wood did at North. He's athletically gifted, can run and mark and kick but stand him under the ball in a contest and he's total s**t.

If we want a forward ruck Ratta or Weed make more sense. Schache could be a handy addition for another role. Perhaps even Ratts giant wingman or something but he's not going to fill a need as ruck/forward.
I think his style might actually suit us matching up with King.

He could play higher up the ground as a genuine CHF. Having him and Membrey pushing up and down the ground while King stats deep.

Out of the two Schache has shown more at both AFL and VFL level. Weideman has shown he can play in the ruck though

Any of you older gen remember the zone change?

I came in aroumd 85 but was very green with footy still, coming from UK based Div 1 and 2 football with Jimmy Hill match calling lol

Who should we of got from that zone?
Remeber hearing Brereton was one
From the time the Saints first moved to Moorabbin in 1965, they had their eyes set on the entire Mornington Peninsula and parts of Gippsland as their recruiting zone.

Yet when the Victorian Football League introduced recruiting zones in 1967, the Saints were given Ballarat, while the Peninsula and surrounds were allocated to Hawthorn. It meant champions like Leigh Matthews, Kelvin Moore and Peter Knights were gifted to the Hawks.

Indeed, the Hawk premiership teams of the 1970s and 1980s were filled with players from the Mornington Peninsula and beyond. It is highly doubtful the Hawks would have won all those flags between 1971 and 1991 if that region had been awarded to the Saints. Dermott Brereton, Gary Ayres, Chris Mew and Knights were all Hawthorn champions who might easily have played for St Kilda instead. The Ablett brothers – Geoff, Kevin and Gary, were also from nearby west Gippsland.

Originally when zones were introduced they were supposed to be rotated regularly.
But hawks, tigers, blues got the good ones and refused to relinquish them.

Bar 2x Essendon and 2x north premierships all bought with big money,
those 3 clubs then won every grand final from zoning 1967 until “equalisation” and the inception of the AFL and draft in 1990.

67-89
Hawks x7
Blues x6
Tigers x5
Bombers x2
North x2

Simple then - name membrey as the CHF and play Schache as a tall HFF who occasionally plays in the ruck. Prefer him ahead of Ratta or Weiderman.

Schache Weed and Tomlinson Jesus that’s a whole lot of average all 3 make Hill look like Greg Burns . Real bottom of the barrel stuff
The plan is to hit the draft so we can't really expect to land to many high profile players.

Tomlinson makes no sense but we need depth at either end.

I'd be happy with either Schache or Weitering as a forward and Phillips as a defender.

Anyone else we draft won't be ready for AFL.

Would prefer Sharman Membrey King and if we are going to a five man interchange play Campbell to give Marshall a rest

We have 6 list spots empty with 2 players still uncontracted so we cant be filling all those spots with draftees. Especially given this draft isn't predicted to deep. We are going to need to either hit up the delisted list or be willing to give up our later picks for players who are proven to be at least solid at AFL level. Tomlinson isn't the game changing name but before he did his knee, he was playing some very good football. So if it was a reasonable pick, adding him to our list would only be making it stronger. Same with the Schache or Weitering types.

No point loading up on kids who were just okay at Nab League level just so we can say we have more kids on our list. We still need to make sure we have depth to chose from next year and players good enough to be fighting for spots.

And Melbourne. We let them get us completely *ed on the score board then decided to play like we didn't care any more and did well for the second half.
It seemed like tried to possess the ball as some teams had had success with kicking short through the Melbourne set up. But the players took sooo long to dispose of the ball that it resulted in more turnovers then we usually have, which is saying something.
Did Pickett play another quarter like that all season? I watched that game from the quarantine hub with covid. Good times.

I've got the first 3 in the 22

But we need depth. At the moment outside of that we have Allison.

I think we need to get Marshall in the ruck. He just hasnt shown to be a dangerous forward. I was happy for him to play 2nd ruck when we had Ryder, but not keen on him playing second fiddle to Campbell

Scraping the bottom of the barrel. Tomlinson + Lienert + Highmore + Allison - let's stockpile tallish guys who can't really play key position.
From memory he played key back alongside May in the premiership year until he went down mid year and Petty got his break into the AFL. I’m sure there was a lot of talk on his good form prior to the injury.

Gallagher confirmed Marshall will be the number 1 man from now on so all we really need is some injury backup.

Is there talk of a five man interchange bench? That would be interesting. Playing a ruck that plays about 25% game time could work.

Adam Tomlinson didn’t have a medical with the dogs and I reckon it’s highly unlikely we are interested

So many players if I recall correctly from Matthew’s to mew. Yes st Kilda was touched up we were given a lousy metro zone and a relatively small country zone, we had Ballarat but not Daylesford from memory. Hawthorn we’re gifted Frankston and areas that had high growth, some basic demographics would show how screwed we were. The league would have counted heads or something similar to justify what they did. Without any analysis it was probably easy to justify, we were broke and clubs were semi professional so we ended up with old areas with stagnant growth.

At local football level you still see it now, a lot of clubs in the inner and middle suburbs that aren’t old boys wind up struggling for numbers and end up paying half the list. There’s a point system that gives players a value from 5 to 1 depending on level played, years at the club etc. Port colts, st kilda city etc run just under the maximum 48 points Cranbourne who won the premiership played with 22 points. Plenty of young people, plenty of kids, lots of juniors playing feeds into lots of senior players.

He played pretty well before doing his knee last year as a key defender. Not sure if we need him but we need someone because Dougal went down last year and we had literally no option and no idea what to do without him.
