Because he's a fringe player

They've had plenty of fringe players go there over the years

If we can get a 2nd we take it and run but we will have to give something along with him to get it
4 years at $500k is pretty good for a fringe player though.

The pick I suggested was 18, I'd be pissed if they weren't asking for 25 or 32 so 18 isn't exactly a far cry from that.
Even at 32 we'd likely have to give something else up. 25 we'd be robbing them. 18 is dreaming.

Still haven't read anywhere other than bigfooty that it's 500k. Even so, it would be good money.

Doesn't change the fact hes been a fringe player on our list for the last 2 years.

There's no way in hell Long gets anywhere near P18.

Total fair value for him would be mid 40s+ on an open market. Averages 12 touches, starts as Substitute more often than not and gets rubbed out more than anyone in the League it seems.

If you want P18, you'd need to throw in our Future 2nd which is a fairly high gamble but worth considering.

If we somehow lucked out and got 32 or even luckier still and sweetened the deal to grab 25 (with a future 3rd added in), take it and run.

He is going to a club that have lots of picks that they seemingly don't need, it's not about what his value is it's what we can get from them and I would hope we'd see it as an opportunity to get significant overs.

Yep, they'll have heaps of picks in the later rounds they won't need.

They'll still want to take a couple of good picks to the draft

No point continuing to argue. It won't happen.

My concern with Sharman is that he isn't going to take a forward away from King (unless he develops significantly). Rata isn't a star by any means, but he's good enough that he needs somebody accountable for him.

I don't mind giving Sharman more time to develop. He seems pretty versatile so would rather see him play a third tall swing man, then be our second stay at home forward.

We actually have exactly what we need already in Hayes. If his round 1 performance was something he could do regularly we are a far, far better side. But don't want to bet the house on him just yet for obvious reasons.
Heath will. He’s a unit

On our list yes, but the offer he is supposedly getting is not the offer you give to a fringe player. 4 years ( even if that $amount is not accurate) is a long time.
Our fringe players get 1 or 2 years.

If they think he’s worth that, then they need to pay up. I agree #18 is highly unlikely, but we should not be giving him away.

Well we have the Danny Frawley centre. Maybe we can help him. Our club has certainly been pretty understanding with Paddy and Zac.
I found it strange Carlton basically said he doesn't have a tank , slow and can't kick --- damning comment from the club.

Ben Long was pick 24 in the 2016 draft and I would say he has dropped in value and it must be remembered it was touted if the club had a taker for him they were going to move him on last year , so you can see why he is looking for job security.

But they’ll swap into next year if they don’t need. They won’t give them away.

A club under salary cap issues that has plenty of picks to burn has offered long a 4 year contract, not 2 years but 4!

So obviously they rate him and probably have a particular role they want him to play.

We would be silly not to ask for Geelong's pick 18 if that deal goes through. Start high and accept 25

PSD is a real threat and with Goldcoast not having too many players wanting to go there they'll pony up.

Ben Long hasn't been the star we were hoping him to be and he would know he has been borderline been up for trade the last few years and it is most probably the reason he was looking for job security at the Suns.
His last game was the best he ever played for us and to see him produce that on a consistent basis for the Suns would hurt , he could well turn around to be another Sinclair story or he could be another that just fades away - suppose it's up to him.

Was pretty obvious the first year in , as an overage draftee from the VFL, he was not going to be the "Next Cyril". Terrible drafting.

David Noble was pretty complimentary about him.
worth a go if he’s cheap, surely?

25 is laugh out of the room stuff let alone 18.
Not sure 25 is laugh out of the room stuff for a bloke they obviously rate. I hope that's where we start the conversation, I guess we will see what happens but think we'll be chasing a decent pick and wouldn't be surprised if we get one.

Lachie Weller was contracted...

I can't even believe we are having a discussion around Ben Long and a first round pick 😂

I didn’t say first rounder, agreed we should ask for overs and if we do there is a chance we get their earliest 2nd rounder as opposed the last of their three 2nd round picks.

The Lachie Weller deal is still up there with one of the most desperate and dumbest trade moves I’ve seen.

Freo prob said they wanted their 2nd rounder as a laugh and must have been in total disbelief when it was agreed to.

It really is. Just don’t get your hopes up. He’s been in and out of our team for years. We’d be saying a 4th rounder if it was in reverse. He may be on a moderate $ contract and I’m not sure the size of contract matters as much for trade as we think it does (price to pay to get him out). We’ve all argued this in reverse. Maybe 32, but even then I would think a later pick this or next year would have to go their way.

I think his style might actually suit us matching up with King.

He could play higher up the ground as a genuine CHF. Having him and Membrey pushing up and down the ground while King stats deep.

Out of the two Schache has shown more at both AFL and VFL level. Weideman has shown he can play in the ruck though
Pea heart
No thanks

He may want to. With Hopper & Tarantula coming in, his midfield opportunities are gonna drop right off.

Richmond also need to lose some $$$ to fit them in.

Hope we’re at least speaking to his management.

They will also be spewing dollars over SC cup.
Saints offer #27 or F2nd for Jack.

It would be pretty rare that an unsigned player nominated a club and then decided to stay wouldn't it?

Having said that I thought Gags kind of suggested they still want to keep him the other day.
Was it one of those messages suggesting we would like him to stay but not matching the $$$.

Bit hard to play as an inside mid when you've got Cripps in the team so it might be that he's not a hbf'er. Problem might be that he's a one position player like Bytel.

"...Stocker was drafted to be a hard-nosed midfielder in time and despite stints on the ball, he played the majority of his footy behind the ball."

He's a Saints supporter if it makes any difference.
Only runs one way. Doesn’t have an engine. That’s a no for me.

Yes it’s the supply side of the equation. They have lots to supply and they demand it…
