Yeah I'd prefer to just keep 9 and next years first but I just get the feeling we really want to get higher up

Pick 4 would get you one of those players you names though

1. Ashcroft
2. Cadman
3. Wardlow
4. Sheezel
5. Tsatas

Prefer to take Phillipou at 10 and keep next years though
This.

I keep seeing Bont when I’ve seen him

Hawks may well take Clark before Geelong
There has been a lot of Clark and Selwood comparisons - is that off Geelong wanting him, or is he that inside type?

Because if he is very inside, I could see Hawks preferring someone who leans more outside to compliment the mids they already have.

I reckon they're our biggest threat for McKenzie.

Then I hope Clark sat Ratts down and said what are you and the director of coaching doing to ensure that players like me reach our potential? Are you implementing the most professional practices as non-negotiable? Are you more concerned with driving high standards or keeping everyone happy? What concrete steps do you think I should take to become a competition leader (No soft-skills/affirmation type inspirational quotes please) What are you doing for the players that need the most attention and help, and do you even know who they are? Is your playing strategy one that plays to the strengths of the team?
Highly doubtful, in fact one in a million chance this would occur.
Walsh, on the other hand, would hopefully be saying all this and more.

Have to question our strategy and execution if the plan is to ‘spike sharply’ after 2023.

There are currently 14 of our ‘best 22’ who will be over 26 next year.

That suggests to me we absolutely should be in our window.

In another 2 years players like Steele, Sinclair, Crouch, Hill, Howard, Billing’s, Ross & Membrey will all be coming towards the back few holes of their careers with no obvious, high end replacements in sight.

If Clark, Coffield, King, Battle & Higgins don’t step up and take ownership of the side in the next two years then it’s back to the drawing board and another rebuild.

I think we’ve seen enough from Gags to suggest he’s not the man for the job.
If your saying our players are heading into the 2nd half of their AFL careers, then isnt the Draft a good option

Depends on the individual I suppose

Isaac Smith looked pretty hungry thus year for an old fella

Isaac Smith came in and assimilated into the Geelong culture, we however try to take on their winning culture. I think also Geelong have only recruited 15 premiership players from other clubs while we are at 47.

More esteemed football brains than us are saying a similar thing .

You must build from within.

Call me crazy but I don't really see a problem with any of these comments.

He really didn't say anything like what a lot of people here are suggesting.
Agree.
Theres been a lot of hysteria around these comments taken out of context.
Appears to me they had a plan, and they stuck to it. Now it may have been boring as batsh*t for those of us living on here, but should we not at least be happy that they ARE sticking to their plan, which on the surface looks ok to me and not throwing all our available cash at players like Weideman etc.

When the football department did their “season review”.

  • Player availability/Injuries
  • Transition of the football
  • Forward 50 scoring efficiency (there is apparently some nuts stat where we went from being elite when scoring inside 50 - to being as dangerous as a rubber sword)

Are some areas that came up.

player development was an improvement apparently
OK. Have to agree with all of these - I’m sure we all do.

Now lets see what they do about them.

I agree too, I'm happy with what they are doing... finally.

We need to build our team from within, we need to develop our talent from within, we need to build our culture from within, we need to create our own identity and our own culture.

You are so inconsistent, that Geelong game was a 10 minute patch even. Freo, Geelong we’re great wins. Richmond were a worse side than us. The Dockers and Tigers were both missing players as well. Most of the first half sides were easier sides. The harder part of the draft was in the second half. I still don’t think we played many games where we were a much better side. The second half of the year we were a bottom 3 side. It wasn’t even close to good but doesn’t mean the first half was great. As said before if King and Snags convert over league average we win. Otherwise we lose.
You are so wrong it is not funny. I watched it two weeks ago.

Freo stopped us in the first half, not only did we stop them in the second half we ran over them.

Richmond were not a worse side than us, they made the finals,

You make excuses for every other teams why they got beaten by us. Facts are we played good front end football in the first half of the season, it was not poor and ugly as you put it.

As for the second half of the season, every game was like the Port game in the first half, poor skills, little pressure, no system going into the 50. Remember he Essendon game, they looked like they could not be bothered tackling or pressuring or even zoning properly.

You are correct, the second half of the season we were bottom four, which makes it all so frustrating about the firsts half. Sure we got some injuries, but unlike you with other teams, I won't use that as an excuse. It was the mental weakness of the team and the coaches inability to fire them when things got wobbly.
We had injuries to key players yes, but even with injuries, it is the way you lose sometimes, and most of our losses in the back end were flat lustless, non pressure games with hundreds of turnovers and no forward entry gameplan.

The only team mentally weaker than us was your love, Carlton, who managed to get beaten convincingly by an out of form, low on confidence St.Kilda which ultimately cost them a finals spot.

Classic misrepresentation of history. We've traded in 6 players in 19/20 that are all starting 22 and will remain starting 22 for a number of years.

And the oldest is Crouch (27) who cost us nothing.
Oldest is Hill who is 29 and 30 July next year

Couch is 28 and will be 29 in January next year

Not to mention Ryder and a few others

So you obviously aren't counting Hannebery, Ryder, Kent, Frawley, McKernan ... Or any of the top-ups which has put us in the position which we are in now.

Righto champ. I guess we just shouldn’t bother talking about any of it right? All done now so may as well just move on.
TBH we’ve talked about it ad nauseum. At some stage we do have to move on.

Revisionism. Our football was anything but ugly.
I know it doesn't fit you narrative however what you posted is just untrue.
Lower sides? Freo, Richmond, Geelong are lower sides? You make up rubbish.
If you look after the bye, I would agree, and this is the reason the season was so disappointing, we had the game to match it with anyone no matter how many Trump like facts you try to trot.
Dont piss on my back and tell me its raining, I have eyes, I saw our games, I saw us 8-3, hell after the GF, I went back and watched our game v Geelong, we matched them and ran over them. And don't give me rubbish that they weren't playing good football, they were very good
So by all means criticise the season, it was a trainwreck after the bye, but don't bullshit about our start, it is as insulting as Gallagher saying we just have to just wait a season or two before glory.

This was all done when there was no pressure and the draw benefited us. When the draw got a bit tougher then we fell to pieces.

I'm waiting for you to add the second half of 2021 with the first half of 2022 ... then you can give us first place on the ladder.

We had gaping holes everywhere in the list, the age demographic was terrible and it had to be fixed.

The only one gone is Paddy who arguably was the best of the five brought in in 2019.

Crouch and Higgins are good players, we wasted a chance with Alison but he was pick 29 in the end and may still come good (doubtful)

So we have a good basis of players but no superstars. I would argue going to the draft started in 2021.

Naz, Owens and Windy have all been excellent pickups, lets hope we snag a quality mid with 9 and some and a sneaky at 28 and 32.

Naz, Owens, Windy, Bytel, Byrnes, Heath, Adams, Sharman, King plus three more youngsters

Then we have Coff, Clark, Gres, Higgins, Butler, Battle, Paton, Highmore, McKenzie, Connolly and Hayes as 23-26 y.o's

Only outstanding prospects of being an absolute elite player from the first group

King

then maybe one or two of Naz, Windy or Owens

Second group

Coff and Clark I still have hopes for, maybe Gres, if all three can get a good run at injury they could rise.

So its slim pickings, but I would say this was identified and the ball put in motion to hit the draft in 2021.

How beating three finalists and bring the last team to beat the premier done with no pressure. More silly revisionism.

Really instead of being a smartarse try keeping up with conversation, it was in response to the pre bye results and the flagrant mistruths being told to justify a bs narrative.
