Interesting to see some pessimistic assessments of Cuners on here. My recollection is that it was really starting to gel for him before he did his knee.

Not going to be super popular with some but I don't think it's too pessimistic to cast doubts on Cunners long term future with the club.

In six seasons he has managed 41 matches and kicked 23 goals. Compare this to Mitch Robinson who managed 100 games and 54 goals in a significantly better team in his six seasons with us. And Robbo started a long way back from Cuningham in the natural skills department.

Yes he has had a very poor run with injuries and I do agree that at the time of his knee injury he was showing signs that it was starting to come together for him. But it wasn't injuries that kept him out of the team all of the time, often I think it was the very thing that kept Robbo in the team, fierce desire for the ball.

I don't think he is best 22, the recruitment of Cerra and Hewitt along with the re-emergence of Kennedy and (hopefully) Dow and Setterfield will make it hard for him to play on ball which many think is his destiny. I just hope he gets back to full fitness and shows us what he's capable of in the forward line.

I don't think I'm pessimistic as such but do have a degree of scepticism that has steadily built over the last 20 years.

Think it's unfair to apply one expectation on Cuningham and not Dow. Dow wouldn't have been in the side if cunners hadn't gone down and was showing a bit. He's also had more opportunities in the midfield than Cuningham has. On his limited output he was still better than Dows production across the season. We celebrated Dow spending more time in the middle which was good but I see so much more balance to Cuninghams game and this wouldn't have been an issue had he have played the year out.

could you have found a more different player to compare him to?

Why?

Thought Robbo played a similar role to what we would like to see Cuningham play, but JMO.

I agree on same role (hff/mid), but completely different players.

Cuners silky and smooth, Robbo as rough and tough and they come.

The only thing Cuningham is missing is the additional 'n'

And good health.

And continuity.

And consistency.

And a coach/gameplan that gets maximises his strengths.
