Subject: Notes from training today

The AIA centre greeted track-watchers under a gun-metal grey sky replete with swollen lightish clouds, broken by slivers of blue signalling a foretaste of a more benign outlook. As it transpired, brilliant cobalt skies provided the arena’s roof for the bulk of the session but morphed again into a slate hue as training wound down. Such is the fickleness of a Melbourne day.
The ever zealous Madge was first onto the oval, but not before enveloping the visiting Lyndon Dunn in an ursine like hug. Not long after the majority of youngsters graced the oval and quickly set about a friendly game of kick to kick. The older listed players all spent time renewing acquaintances with Dunn who stayed for the duration of the session.

Many of the routines and drills were similar to the summer proceedings, with the mini-hurdles the entrée on the menu (today they were asked to hop over them), some work on the resistance ropes, followed by some close-in handball drills and some desultory kicking. There was also some drill focussed on agility with the players dodged around tall, pliable sticks.
There was then a station activity wherein players rotated between activities. The most notable one was arguably the one overseen by Selwood and Jetta who worked in tandem in terms of instructing the players and providing extra tutelage after drills were completed. Players were paired and had to evade and effect tackles. One saw how difficult the elusive Nick Daicos is to tackle, with the exasperated Lippa unable to lay a digit on him, but players in general tackled (pardon the pun) this with gusto and respond well to these assistant coaches.

Of those absent, the only one without any apparent explanation was Checkers, and it’s concerning that he missed the main training session. They fly to Queensland tomorrow where there will be a captain’s run to cap off the preparation. It turns out that Checker’s girlfriend has COVID and Ginnivan who didn’t train is also a casualty. This morning Adams said that only four players now have not had the virus.
Ruscoe and Beau did some running and partook of some vigorous boxing on the sidelines. Elliott was obviously nowhere to be seen, neither was Dean, though Tyler wore his number on his back. I spotted big Faye strolling to training, exuding an air of insouciance as I was departing. Tardew, as he often does, joined in the main session with the guys.

Kreuger was in black and trained very well and Adams made a hearty return. Both these players in addition to JDG and Roughead will return to the fray so it will be interesting to look out for the specific changes tomorrow night. Cox was donned in white, while Cameron wore the black. Madge similarly sported the black which usually means one is destined for the seniors, though of the white group, some may occupy the bench and a medi-sub will be drawn for these players. Bianco and Tyler were in white but Reef was with the black team. Ollie Henry was wearing white today which might also may be a pointer to his selection prospects.

Those wearing the black tops spent time working on ball movement together on one side of the ground, while the white group replicated this on the opposite side. It was followed by a mini-match simulation with the players retaining their nominated tops.

Early during the session, the players formed a group and after a short time, there was a noise of affirmation which reverberated around the near empty oval. It appears this was to celebrate Howe’s imminent 200th game.

During the match sim Cox rucked well against Grundy at times and it was clear that Howe and Moore look like they will have a freer rein to be aggressive based on, their movement patterns, with the latter in particular storming down the ground at top speed several times. Later when the training session was drawing to a close, Howe, Moore and Pendles spent a long time talking with Leppa which suggests that the defensive strategy may alter with the return of Roughy.

The mids also milled in the centre of the ground with some specialist ruck work taking place and some extended chats involving those likely to form our on-ball brigade. This included Pendles and Sidey. It was interesting to see Reef released up the ground a bit during the match sim and he looks more comfortable in this role, rather than starvation corner being his exclusive domain.

Good things come to those who wait haha.

Training report- Round 5, Tuesday April 12th, 2022.

Overcast, then bit of sunny periods; type of morning. Turned up just after 9am, just in time as they started to walk out onto the ground.
Madgen was first. Followed by Murley.

Players missing:

  • Elliott
  • Johnson
  • checkers

Doing side work:

  • McCreery (running, boxing)
  • Dean
  • Murphy

Walking/light ball work:
  • Beggy, as he sits out his 12 days
  • Ginni, who I thought it was odd he was in runners and a jacket, not partaking.

Ruscoe was doing some running and a couple either things with the rehab boys.

They split off into groups. Did some tackling drills, and trying to evade tackles. Usually was a group of 6 or 8 in pairs. Nick v Lippa for example. This was nearest to me. The other groups worked on other things.

The talls (Grundy, Cox, Cameron, Kreuger) did ruck duties on the middle of the ground with Frasier, involving taps toward the mids (Kreuger sometimes was posing as the "rover")
Near the goals, there was a group doing a drill kicking it inside 50.

Next up, the groups split up into blacks v whites. Some wore vests and they did some ball movement work.

Then it was time for match play.

At the end of the match play, the players did their own thing. Went inside when they wanted to.

Madgen and Brown both wearing black makes me sad.
Both will make important contributions to our victory.

‘No need to frown with Madgen Brown…’

Same with Cameron.
Cameron I’m ambivalent on because I don’t think Cox brings anything more to the table than him. Dominating in the ruck against VFL opponents a foot shorter than him doesn’t really change my opinion.

Going by the training reports… the 19 names in black at training… they look likely

The 4 additional names to come from the 15 on the white team could be any one of 5-6

Cox, WHE (unfortunately), Noble, Henry, Poulter, T Brown seem most likely for that group… maybe a bolter like Harrison gets a look in… but the rest of the names there seem pretty far off it

Madgen, C Brown, McInness seem safe this week for mine

I am a little annoyed at the pile-on from some here around Jack Madgen. It is true that he is never going to be Alex Rance- or Darcy Moore-like, but he is a Collingwood player whose courage, application and commitment to the cause could never be questioned.
You cannot simply have 40-odd superstars on your list and just wait for the premierships to roll in. You must have role players who are ready to go when the time comes. He is one.
If Madgen were in any way something of a tool off the field, some of the sniping could be justified maybe, but he seems like a great clubman, popular among the team, and busting his gut for our club.
He deserves more respect than this ''anyone but Madgen'' crap.

rant over
100% agree.

It’s not ideal but at least with Roughy back Magden won’t have to occupy a key forward and with Adams and De Goey back Cal Brown can just play a forward pressure role until McCreery gets back.
Great… we can have him corralling players and not sticking tackles. It will be nostaligic, just like the Blair era.

Cal Brown "just" playing a role that he is absolutely terrible at is not a good thing at all.

Also remember players may have worn a different colour so a) not to give fans the inside word too early and b) even it out as we're light on defenders.

Possible for the 2nd option in regards to Madgen. But the first... yeah, that usually doesn't happen. What you see, is what usually transpires.

Maybe he's playing forward? Maybe he won't be that bad?
