Lobb could easily be a great forward, the guy is just lazy, he has all the skills and talent.
Lobb isnt lazy....

I dont know where this comes from. He isnt lazy at all.

His best performances of the year came against Hawthorn and Gold Coast, when Tabs wasn’t in the team, and our first match against Sydney when I think Tabs went off early. This suggests to me that our forward line organisation is at least partly at fault.

it definitely doesnt help, but i dont think his best footy is played predominantly forward. i think it was 2019, games against the giants and essendon where he played a bit further up the ground as the link up for our transition where he was dominant

dont think his or tabs leading patterns are good enough to have the both of them in there majority of the time anyway

A motivated and fit Lobb is what Fremantle need. He has games (Sydney, Hawks,Collingwood) where he dominates, if he can increase that to even 8 games a year that would go a long way to us winning more often.
Would love to see him play those games against top-6 teams. Would quell alot of doubters on here.

There are doubters for a reason. He’s 29 years old on $700k and people are hoping that he can get his motivation levels up high enough to play consistently good footy. Doesn’t that just say it all

it’s a job for the sports psychologist, think back a few years when he hurt his scapula and played out the match and made a game saving tackle / chase on the wing in the dying seconds of the game. He played on during the season with the injury until our season was done.

That commitment and desperation is there, but comes out occasionally. Last preseason he nearly does an ACL, bursts back onto the scene, goes back into his shell then re-emerges again.

2020 he gets a stutter in his goal kicking routine but makes it disappear in 2021.

It’s so hot and cold, but if he can maintain the rage we’ll have an elite player.

BRING YOUR MOUTH GUARDS

There was a big focus on contested ball and tackling drills at training this morning, as the players worked in groups in confined spaces.

Classy draftee Neil Erasmus was learning from the best as he went one-on-one with tough nut Andrew Brayshaw, with both players wearing mouth guards. Erasmus also received some advice on tackling technique from assistant coach Matthew Boyd.

The Dockers made strong gains in the contested ball, clearance and ground ball areas last season and will hope to become a dominant force around the contest in 2022 on the back of the emergence of ruckman Sean Darcy as a star.

While inside beast Nat Fyfe, who often runs separately to the main training session as he recovers from a shoulder injury and infection, was missing, the club’s oldest two players in David Mundy and Michael Walters trained fully.

ON THE OUTER

There was a largish rehab group after ahead of the players’ three-week Christmas break beginning on Saturday, but importantly no player has been ruled out of round one.

Matt Taberner, Griffin Logue, James Aish, Lachie Schultz, Josh Treacy and Brandon Walker trained separately, while Sam Sturt is also being looked after.

Taberner is projected to re-join main training at the end of January following post-season ankle surgery, while injury-cursed youngster Sturt is set begin training fully after the Christmas break and have a sold lead-in to the season.

Big man Rory Lobb trained and didn’t look bothered by a back spasm suffered on Monday, bouncing up after being heavily tackled to the ground by youngster Nathan O’Driscoll in one drill.

CHRISTMAS GRINCH

‘Tis the season to be jolly but coach Justin Longmuir wasn’t in a mood to be handing out too many round one starting berths as presents.

There were a couple of gentle reminders for players that they had better knuckle down as Longmuir gave his final interview for 2021.

He said yet-to-debut onballer Luke Valente, who has been on the list for three seasons, had “a bit of work to do” to force his way into the midfield and also acknowledged veteran rebounder Nathan Wilson could come under pressure for his spot given the addition of Jordan Clark.

Alrighty team, first up, massive disclaimer, I cant tell who the **** anyone is unless they are pretty close so apologies if there is any misinformation

First up, the easy bits
The only players I'm 99% sure wasnt out there today was AP and Fyfe because they are pretty easy to recognize and I dont think I saw them. I also dont think I saw Sturt but we have quite a few pasty white kids over 190cm now with the same haircut so I could easily have gotten him confused with someone else. Benning I saw because he came over to talk to family but didnt do anything at all from what I could see, he definitely wasnt in main training

Rehab group I tried to make sure I could identify
- Schultz, Walker and Logue all did lots of laps and no main training drills from what I could see.
- Tabs and Aish did some of their own work together combining repeat running and Aish getting running between cones and hitting Tabs up with coach minding space
- Treacy did a combination of running and gym I think
Additional disclosure on this group, Treacy and Tabs may have joined in the forward drills that were on the other side of the ground but I couldnt tell because it's too far away to discern players. The main takeaway from these names is they were definitely on some modified program BUT I honestly couldnt tell you if it was an injury because they all moved really well without much strapping and it clearly wasnt lower body related if it was an injury

Drills
We did 3 drills simultaneously as the main session that the guys rotated through as well as an intermittent drill between each rotation. There was a focus on contested work today for the most part.

Drill 1
1 on 1 tackling and breaking tackles. Focus on technique on both sides then working in a 2 v 2 to get past one another

This was the easiest one to watch since it was right in front of the watchers. Noddy laid the meanest tackles by far, just looked impossible to break free from. I did notice the intent (or lack of) from a couple familiar villains where either the idea of the drill was too confusing (there was some shuffling type pattern steps before the tackle) or they really didnt like the drill.

Additionally, Johnson managed to keep stride with Clark who broke away which I thought was encouraging. Didnt look the best tackler though...

Drill 2
Group handpass/tackle situation then move into different goal crumbing exercises. Top of 50, push to top of square, just top of square etc. This was at the other end of the ground so was hard to tell who did what and did well. Did see Sonny with a couple real nice snaps though

Drill 3
Group rebounds from 50 where a coach calls out players in coloured bibs that have to be hit in order (ie purple, orange, pink) then rebound the other way to hit a forward on the lead.

Skills here were pretty good for the most part (I mean there was no pressure so they should be) with the exception of the last group that Sonny was a part of and gave a spray for needing more intent both in hitting the ball and with their kicking. From what I saw, Amiss hit a couple of very nice passes and Noddy again stood out to me where he had some bullet passes that were on point

Intermission drill
In between the core drills, they'd get a drink then do another group contested handpass drill where it's one team vs another and your trying to score by getting to a coach (anyone who has played footy before likely knows the drill). There was one exception where one of the groups (I think for resting purposes) would only walk and it was touch only for a turnover. This lead to some pretty cool handpasses from what I couls see.

I'm pretty sure I heard the coach taking this drill scream "PRESSURE LIAM" at one point.

Final Drills
After three rounds of the above, the team broke up into more specialised groups. The mids and rucks did a clearance drill. Forwards broke into two groups and went to each end of the ground and practiced goal kicking (Sonny won his group, just pipping Crowden and Amiss). Defenders I THINK did a aerial contest drill

The interesting one was Chappy and Clark who did their own drill with a coach where one simply got the ball off the coach in a variety of ways (received, or tackled the coach or picked off the ground etc) and did a 20m bullet kick to the other. Seemed to be a specific drill to practice rebounding 50 short quick kicks so might have to get comfortable with Chappy in the backline

Colyer for some reason had to do like 20minutes of a full ground gut runnning drill that involved kicking - looked real good as well given the drill was brutal.

The Viv Michie TTHD award for today goes to Noddy who didnt put a step wrong IMO.

Looks like I was more on the money with what I saw than I thought. Think I've pretty much said everything in here lol

Great job Snuff! Perseverance in spades there, not easily beaten. Really appreciate the effort that goes into these reports.

Thanks Snuffaluphagus, love your work.

Not the first comment about Nathan O'Driscoll training strongly this preseason, Blakely wouldn't want to be putting a foot wrong either IMO.

There are doubters for a reason. He’s 29 years old on $700k and people are hoping that he can get his motivation levels up high enough to play consistently good footy. Doesn’t that just say it all
Oh for sure the doubts are justified. He's a top-5 paid player on our list and has never put in a top-5 season. I do think the "lazy" calls are a bit harsh though.
