Great player example would be James Hird.

I’ll see your Hird and raise you a chubby Voss…

Anyway, I’ve repeated this multiple times in multiple threads. You can train a player to be fit as all hell all you want but you can’t train a footy brain.
Diesel Williams/Sam Mitchell/Voss/Hird bloody hell even Mrs MacsGovern from up the road. None of them the fittest I wouldn’t think but they know when and where to go before it goes there.
On the opposite end, Langdon/Blicavs/Masten etc I wouldn’t call natural footballers etc but they carve out successful careers because they can run all day.
Anyway when is my new BFF Logue getting unleashed in the midfield?

Anyone go to training today?

Lol, it's as if the West's "journalists" have a graphic organiser, or 'Cliff Notes' of which they can quickly utilise in fleshing out insightful "articles", regarding Fremantle's training sessions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Headline - Imperative that this line creates hysteria among Fremantle supporters on account of a most definitely illegitimately-sourced "scoop", regarding an injury to a marquee player. Ensure a negative stance is utilised at all times.

Byline - Some gutter "journalist"

Date - Every Monday

Article body - Focus on injuries sustained by any players, spectators and even dogs in attendance. If someone receives a severe sunburn, milk it for all it's worth! Minor injuries sustained must be blown out of proportion and we are to abstain from including details regarding players of whom have returned to the main training group, as such topics are far too positive in nature. Shine a blinding light on any assistant coaches who have transferred from the West Coast Eagles, ensuring their contributions are viewed as the most impactful and positive. The key words and phrases to litter these paragraphs with, are: "sore", "required immediate medical attention", "retired to the club's headquarters", "did not return", "appeared ginger", "away from the main group", "rehab group", "heavily strapped", "weren't sighted", "missing in action" and "ran laps".

Conclusion - No need for any enlightening and informative information regarding the extent or nature of the training drills carried out, as that's not what we're here for people!

In Nic Nat we trust! Go get 'em Eagles!

Joel Western turned 19 literally 3 months ago. To say your comment is a bit harsh is an understatement

I get that he is young, he is however a tweener… where his body shape size speed etc gravitates him to being a small forward.

However his body of work to date ie juniors/WAFL indicates that’s not his sweet spot.

For a spot in the team he is sliding out the back door… his speed around the contest is exceptionable but his strength over the ball is questionable.

Re recent viewing, yeh I’ve seen him at recent training. Not standing out would be the obvious comment.

Question is where can he fit in and who does he need to get past for the seniors role.

I would expect most 19 year old kids to have questionable strength over the ball. For a kid that played juniors as a kid I thought he went ok last year - far from guaranteed success but should be given this season before we judge him.

I have the same question marks over him, and agree that his most likely pathway to an AFL career is forward.

However his closest like for like in our best 22 is Colyer, and he he plays a more diverse role than simply a small forward.

For me, the main thing Western needs to focus on is kicking. I think he is the worst kick in the team, at least outside the talls.

At the end of the day Western was a pick 54 or whatever - statistically he’s a 9% chance of playing 200 AFL games and a 19% chance of playing 100. He’s a 48% chance to play 50 games. So it’s still more likely than not, that he won’t play 50 AFL games, and given we got Walker with pick 50 in the same draft and he’s projecting to play a lot more games than your average pick 50, we can’t expect too much.
You cant get them all right.
Worth bearing this in mind when it comes to expectations for Benning too.
In my mind, if we turn over 8-9 players a season on the list and 3 of those play more than 100 games, we are doing ok.

I’ve got a good feeling about Benning. Those clean hands below his knees are very good for a big man and he plays with about 200x more aggression than Lobb.

It won’t be about talent for him, it’ll be a question of commitment and self belief.
In that case I’d have to commend JL, Bell, Garlick and Walls on their read of the situation by offering him a list spot rather than a rookie contract.

That was a left field move for me, and one I like too.

One year was never going to be enough given the position he plays. Also the club would know him well enough to have confidence that he will use those 2 years well.

As dockeroo points out, he may still be a long shot but they have given him the best opportunity.

Well we picked Tabs and Treacy from the rookie drafts so Benning therefore is better?
I like our future tall forwards in Amiss, Treacy, Benning with all playing different styles.
They all appear to pressure the opposition, something that should bring others into the game, and create scoring opportunities.
That we should use Darcy like Gawn is another way to maintain forward dominance.

While we are on Eric Benning, do you think the club would have picked the other Serong ahead of him if Hawthorn didnt.. the body language of the selectors
implied that .

Yes because he was already in the bag.
What we had to do was take him with our following pick as Essendon were ready to pounce
on him if we tried to take him through the rookie draft.

It’s pretty strange that the Mature guys at Freo are the ones that will be cut first.
I think guys like Walker offer so much more than players like Acres, Blakely and even Colyer.
Good depth, but competition for spots will be at a premium.
Will be some good players at Peel this year, exciting times ahead with plenty having something to prove.
So you mention Walker against a midfielder, wing and high half-forward. Walker maybe can play wing, pretty irrelevant comparison.

Fremantle were hoping to add Western as Cat-B rookie. If I remember correctly passing on a pick between Walker (50) and the pick 54 Western was selected as a bid came to keep us accountable.

Walker dropping to pick 50 was a massive surprise. At one point there was talk from Tigers (Balme from memory) that he was in the mix for their early 20’s pick. Twomey and Shifter made comments on the AFL draft coverage that they were astounded he hadn’t gone earlier.

Benning is an interesting one there was talk Essendon were leaving a pick to draft him at the extreme back end of the ND. His progress throughout 2021 having moved to Perth, from up North projects significant upside. Need to play the long game with him but ruck forward is exactly the position we are in need of. Paddy Ryder type.

Back to Western. He won’t get the long game that Benning gets. We’re seeing if he can develop into a small forward. I’m not sure he is a small forward but as described by another more your speedy half forward like Colyer. He has frozen up a bit at afl level but transitioned to WAFL quite well averaging 17 possessions, 4.5 marks and kicking 14 goals from 12 games. More tackles and more composure is needed from Western. His speed is elite. I remember driving back from Dunsborough listening to the WAFL coverage on Sports FM and it was Peel playing Claremont I think (21 possessions, 6 marks and 3 goals). The commentators were in awe the way he just spread and sped off from players. One of his goals running about 100metres leaving about 3 lagging behind.

A lot will depend on how he progresses this year. I wouldn’t expect to see him play much if at all for Freo. The McGowan borders are going play havoc with the reserve players but if he gets to play a normal amount of games for Peel progressing to an average of 20 possessions, over 1.5 goals per game, more tackles and more games like that match against Claremont; he will go alright. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see him moved (via delist and rookie draft) to the cat-a rookie list.

Imagine Western with the Ballas aggression and tackling. Kid could still be something. I've also met him and he's a top notch bloke.

Agreed, would like to see Western develop some mongrel.

In terms of their first games, Ballantyne was more than 3 years older than Western when he made his AFL debut.

That’s the exact point was going to make. Western shouldn’t be judged at 19 in his second season. Thought he was in good areas some games, just one or two steps off. With experience and fitness, he ll get better.
Colyer is 29. Once western is up to his third or fourth season, then he ll replace Colyer
