Man, the thought of a forward line with Sturt, Amiss complementing Tabs, Shooter, Switta and an occasional resting ruckman = delicious.

...and Treacy :)

Training report coming later but I can report that Brennan Cox is the most dominant forward in the match sim.

If Pearce/Hamling are generally fit, he is the forgotten man this year.

He could easily partner one or more of Tabs/Lobb/Treacy/Amiss as a target up forward. He's smart, has sticky mits and a good tank and could be a match up nightmare as a third tall if Sturt's injury woes continue.

Also from a training drill point of view, currently Tabs, Lobb, Treacy are on light duties or in Rehab… so same lack of availability different year!

Hence Cox has been swung forward!

That's the thing that's concerned me the most: Whilst we may make ground in some of the young mids getting another pre-season under their belts we haven't had really any of our forward line fit for the entire pre-season to make any progress. It feels like all the hallmarks of a frustrating season where our old issues continue to plague us.

Some random things I noticed:

Andy Brayshaw looked a real difference maker in the sim. Also Western had some good involvements. The aforementioned Cox was a standout. All the big men got involved, Meek looks as though he's made another leap in development, Lobb pulled in some good grabs, while Swaggy had a real physical presence.

Frederick had his hands full playing on Ryan, but looks like he's on his way. Erasmus looked a Rolls Royce in the drills, but was a little more anonymous in the sim, think he had a defensive role on AB.

Tucker continued his good preseason, always presenting as an option. Henry bobbed up all over the shop and operated creatively in a phone booth, with most finding him hard to contain.

Look, these training notes are good and all, and I don't want to sound unappreciative, but how hard is it really to film the entire training session from multiple angles, edit it together and upload it to the forums by lunch time so that I can see it for myself? Is that really too much to ask? I'm suffering some serious FOMO here!

I had a bit of a chat with Sturt while he was hiding on the goal line. He was getting down on himself because he couldn’t get on the end of anything. I told him it was awesome just to see him out there with the main group. He’s definitely missing a bit of touch.

Was trying to upload a nice end to end transition from the sim but it's too large, even after compression. Sorry.

Sadly we have learnt today that Luke Valente has retired from the club.
A pity we will never get to see his undoubted skill in Purple.
I would say that his run of injuries that have stopped him from playing has been the reason why.
I wish Luke all the best in his future.

Training report - Match sim 28/01 (1 of 3)
Preseason Report #6

Nearly did not bother with this report due to the other great reports of today’s training. There will be duplication of other reports but this is how I saw it:

Rehab
Had a close look at the rehab today
Benning did very little
Johnson was on the boundary with crutches
I was wondering what the applause was for and guess it must have been for Valente’s retirement
Fyfe, Tabs and Mundy sprinting and must be close
Amiss looks fine and running strongly and close to main group return
Tracey moving better and doing more (trainer said to him that his drills were so much better than Monday) perhaps at last he is on the improve?
He was leading from full foward to kicks from Fyfe and the trainer only allowed him to run at 70%
Fyfe is having endless shots on goal his kicking is already vastly improved, a small bonus to his injury?
Tabs and Fyfe practicing marking above theirs heads with no issue.
I cannot believe that Fyfe appears to have no issues marking above his head already- remarkable!
I have no idea when Fyfe can return to contact drills but when he returns he looks like he will be as good as ever

Match Sim
Purple v Yellow again
Wing positions changed but mainly Frederick, Acres, Henry and Serong
Midfield changed but mainly Meek, Darcy, Brayshaw, Erasmus, Brodie, O’Driscoll, Tucker, Blakely.
Meek had good moments in the ruck and marking in the forward line.
Western was very noticeable in this match sim with lots of run and linkage play a real step up for him.
Cox as mentioned before in other reports was clearly the standout forward with strong marking and kicking for goal.
A highlight for me was when Lobb marked the ball 45m out slight angle, Sonny was 10m away roasting him and chanting snap it Lobby snap it (instead of just kicking the normal drop punt) Sonny played the perfect role of an opposition player - Lobb eventually just kicked the normal drop punt but missed.
Chapman was the winner of the hanger mark of the day
Tucker strong through the middle and finished with a couple of goals.
Shultz crumbed a couple and competed well.
Lovely snap by Clark brought applause from the playing group.
Switta caught a lot of players with his desperation.
Hamling was smashed in the contest a couple of times and left the field, not sure if there was any issue.
The match sim had proper umpires and was a noticeable step up in performance by all players

Disappointing
A lot of points still being kicked.
Valente announcing his retirement but hardly surprising and perhaps we can find a gem out there that deserves a chance ( wouldn’t mind giving the aboriginal boy from Peel a run).
Sturt can’t get near the ball in match sim.

TTHD
Cox and Tucker looking on top of their games. Special mention to Western for making a real impression in the match sim.

Training report - Match sim 28/01 (2 of 3)
My training notes are below:
Josh and jye in rehab with Roy - running laps and kicking with trainers.

Match Sim Q1
Blakely 1st possession out of the middle - shocking kick across the ground results in turnover. He later coped a bake from Logue for letting Brayshaw get loose twice, both times resulting in deep F50 entries.
Cox starting forward in match sim opposed to hamling. Got a Joe the goose goal from Shultz after a good marking contest.
Tabs, Mundy running laps with Fyfe, Treach and Amiss during Sims.
Henry on the wing did some nice things early. Tucker active on other wing/on ball.
Erasmus couple of nice things
Schultz awesome 1-1 vs Logue and another Joe the goose to Cox.
Clark kick out intercepted by Lobb who went back from 50m and drilled it.

Q2
Freddy v fast in f50 - 2 goals
Will Brodie smashed Henry in the middle in 1 contest resulting in free kick. He certainly doesn't mind the in and under stuff and looks to get hands free every time.
Freddy and Luke Ryan 1-1 in f50. Luke laughing and corralling did the job and Freddy missed his 3rd goal.
Meek nice mark at full forward and goal.
Nice goal by Schultz from free kick after the siren to end second quarter. JLo didn't appear to be happy with yellow group and called them in, whilst purple group headed inside.

Q3
Walker off and doing runs with trainer in second half - doesn't appear to be anything wrong.
Cox roved off marking contest set up beautifully by Henry and put it on the boot and sailed through for his 3rd goal.
Sonny couple nice things in 2nd half playing more on ball.
Tucker goal set up by Henry.
Cox contested mark opposed to hamling, set up by a beautiful Wilson kick. Kicks his 4th goal.

Q4
O'Driscoll playing midfield, looked a little lost at times and wanted to go sideways which in the last earnt him a big bake from Sonny.
Nice rundown by Schultz earnt western a goal from the advantage. Western has shown little glimpses today.
Darcy Tucker second goal from 50m on the run caused by turnover.
Sturt unfortunately invisible and beaten by Wilson all day.
Beautiful mark by Tucker sets up play resulting in Cox getting it , kicking to Schultz in the pocket who centres to Sonny - goal. Purple destroying yellow.
Fredrick kicks his 3rd for yellow off a snap from approx 35m.
Clark, a little quiet snapped great goal on the left.
Cox a little sore after marking contest and hobbling, but looks to be ok.

Interesting umpires doing warm down lap talking to each other saying that Freo had alot more spring in their step as opposed to WCE. This might be because we are younger and more enthusiastic or might be because the eagles are old and suck - I'm choosing the latter.

That's all from me.

Why not both?

Great read, thanks FD
