I felt like they were pretty evenly matched on paper. Definitely not possibles vs probables.Thank you training watchers and reporters.
Question if it was obvious, was purple vs yellow a probable vs possible scenario? Or did it seem more randomised as to how each team was selected?
Treacy ! we are forgetting Treacy !Thank you to all the training posters. Brilliant work.
It seems obvious that Cox will be our 'swingman' and locked into the 22 (I also rate him up the ground, smooth mover). Tabs, Cox and Lobb in the forward line!
That leaves as I see it a battle between Chapman and Logue for the third tall. Who is winning that at the moment?

Pretty soon we can throw Amiss in the mix too. Although at current he’s more comparable to Sturt than Treacy in size.

What do you think will happen in the (unlikely) event that injuries don't effect Taberner, Lobb or Treacy's seasons?I’ve said it before Amiss will play games this year if injuries don’t effect his season.
With the way our side is developing I would love to see both Treacy and Sturt to develop midfield capacity, primarily as disruptive agents.Treacy ! we are forgetting Treacy !![]()
A lot of the regular reports seem to suggest he’s shadowing Brayshaw and Serong. He will pick up good trainings habits from them which I imagine the club sees as a way to fast track his development. He seems super competitive and I doubt he’s ever lost at anything during his junior sports days. His highlights also suggest he has natural attacking flair so he could still rotate forward IMO.With the way our side is developing I would love to see both Treacy and Sturt to develop midfield capacity, primarily as disruptive agents.
Reading training reports Erasmus seems clearly focussed on developing primarily as a midfielder as opposed to a forward capable of midfield rotations (training watchers, let me know if I am wrong).
If all defenders are fit then Cox is clearly ahead of Treacy as a forward. With a full squad Treacy will have to impress at Peel to get a game, which is how it should be really. Starting talls would be Tabs, Lobb, Cox with Fyfe spending time forward. What do you think will happen in the (unlikely) event that injuries don't effect Taberner, Lobb or Treacy's seasons?
First cab off the rank to step in for any of those 3 is Cox.
The question over Amiss or Sturt is going to come into focus at some point, but getting them both locked in as super mobile, creative tallish forwards is exciting.
Amiss is likely to get a debut as a development move in my opinion, dependant on the impact of covid on the season. A run of 3 games would be huge.
... your comment about Roy George made me search for a highlights clip and I liked what I saw,, this guy looks like a jet,
That indicates a significant shift in thinking from both Longmuir and Cox.If all defenders are fit then Cox is clearly ahead of Treacy as a forward. I miss ballas, players who pressure as hard as him but also know how to kick goals are pretty rare.Treacy is our small forward. Ballas 2.0
You guys are being spoiled today with multiple training reports! Don't believe anything you read in The West today either, the press left before match sim started. Probably had to get to Lathlain...
Piggy's Report below:
I got to training just as the boys were starting to head out onto the track. Fyfe, Mundy and Taberner were doing some forward craft work with Jamie Graham at the goals where my old man and I were standing. Fyfe was practicing losing his man and getting out the back to take marks in goal scoring positions. Mundy was providing the kicks and Taberner was sort of just drifting around being an aerial presence but not really going for many marks. They then did a bit of practice where Fyfe and Mundy were getting front and square and hitting the ball at pace, Tabs was knocking it down and they were taking a quick snap at goal. Fyfe could not miss. He also looks in very good nick, whoever says he has lost some size should get down and see him in the flesh, he looks amazing for a bloke that couldn't train for months.
I initially thought Sturt was not on the track but I asked a team official on the boundary and he informed me that he had misplaced his Number 1 and was wearing 44. I am not sure who the team official was but he was a middle aged bloke in absolutely ridiculous physical condition. He says that Phil Merriman has being doing a lot of work on the running mechanics of the players and strongly believes that he can reverse our soft tissue injury fortunes by teaching the boys how to run properly. This gentleman also said that the boys are in far superior physical fitness than he's ever seen them at this stage of pre-season and that the club are very bullish that some of these young boys are going to transform our forward line. I don't know why, but I thought to myself 'Erasmus is playing round 1' after I heard that.
Rehab group was very small with Amiss, Treacy and Benning only running laps and not taking part in any ball work. Fyfe and Mundy also didn't take part in the match sim. I was taking phone calls for work in between watching so rather than give a blow by blow run down of the training as has been done already, i will focus on some players who have been the topic of some robust conversations in recent weeks.
Will Brodie: This guy can seriously get his hands free and get a handball out. He spent a fair bit of time running with Brayshaw and held his own well, albeit with the advantage of having big Darcy as his ruckman. Attacked the ground ball well and didn't let the opposition get a lot of easy clearances.PLAYERCARDSTART23Will Brodie

Sam Sturt: Sam is really lacking in his match awareness and touch. He struggled to get involved, I am not sure if he actually touched the ball. As mentioned earlier he was looking very dejected and although I gave him some encouragement about just being out there this time of year I can tell he's desperate to get involved. Hopefully by March he will be ready to go but he seems a long way off at this point in time.PLAYERCARDSTART1Sam Sturt

NOD - This guys hits ground balls like a kamikaze pilot. He is looking bigger, stronger, fitter and just damn better than he did last year. He has a good tank too. He must be close to next in line for a debut with only maybe Erasmus ahead of him.
Liam Henry - Did some really nice things, got plenty of the ball and looked his best when in a bit of space and turning back towards goals. He has to play up the ground this year, he is not a small forward. My dad was most impressed with him out of the lot today.
Darcy Tucker- Fought hard and was involved in a lot of play. I wish he had a right foot as he got into trouble trying to get onto his left a couple of times but he's no orphan there, I can';t believe how many AFL players can't kick opposite foot. Even I could when i played colts for Gozzy, it musn't be trained like it used to be when i was young. Chapman was guilty of this pretty glaringly as well on one occasion that I can recall.PLAYERCARDSTART13Darcy Tucker

Speaking of Young - Hayden Young. Took some strong intercept marks and hit some nice targets. He went off for a little bit to see the trainers but didn't look like he was in any difficulty finishing the session.PLAYERCARDSTART26Hayden Young

As for the usual suspects - Serong worked hard sometimes head to head with Brayshaw but mainly just working on the ball without a close checking opponent. He got a lot of ball in the back half but set up some good play. Brayshaw did Brayshaw things and worked hard accumulating. Lobb was a good aerial presence and took some good clunks. Pearce was solid in defence.
As reported by pretty much all watchers today, Brennan Coxwas the standout. He kicked 3 or 4 goals (pretty sure Logue was on him for most of it) and every time he went near it something happened. He crumbed a pack front and square and snapped a goal in traffic from about 25 out in front, took some really nice marks and used it really well. Not sure if we are going back to the future this year but I've always liked him as a forward out of all of our defenders and today reinforced that belief in my mind.PLAYERCARDSTART36Brennan Cox

i wish I could report on Erasmus but TBH I didn't notice him much. Although as a first year player he is doing well to look right in place and not stand out for the wrong reasons.
Well that's all I can think of for now, hit me up if you want me to try and answer any specific questions.
It finally feels like we have the spine to actually compete in Finals.
An overall depth of quality talls who can play dual positions.
It should give us the size to lift the club up the ladder.
In the past it has been our Achilles heel, not anymore.
Relying on a few to stand up, injury leaving us vulnerable.
Can’t wait for the hunt to begin.
I don't recall. Even the match sim happened without Taberner or Treacy available. Our team make up is still unclear.I think that's been flagged by them already, hasn't it?
Interesting observation about Watson, Duman and Conca. None of them have found AFL list positions, and I haven't read of any train on opportunities.Training notes

Cox is simultaneously in our best 3-4 defenders and forwards (plus can fill in as ruck), and our most flexible tall.
The ruck battle was an intriguing one, with Darcy and Meek proving to be even opponents throughout the session. Meek provided the highlight between the pair, with a strong contested mark 15 metres out from goal and converting the set shot.
Both Young and Sam Sturt(Yellow) played the full four quarters to show their injury concerns were behind them.PLAYERCARDSTART1Sam Sturt
