Training 2022 Training Reports

We're not meant to be rebuilding, we're meant to be built by now. There's the problem.
We need Young and Henry to make massive progress in their third year. And Sturt to play a full season. If these types of guys don't hit the heights soon the timing of their incline with Fyfe's and Walters decline is going to be all wrong.
It's 2022 season coming up. It's not just about the 2022 season but also possibly 2023 as well.

Fyfe is out of contract in 2023, so is Walters.

Those 2016 draftees in Logue, Cox, Darcy and Ryan all have had 5 years of development from 2017-2021. These 4 should be at their prime years or close to it.

If you get a bunch of 18-21 year Olds in one draft, 5 years down the track they are 23-26 year Olds. All 4 are in Freos best 22 when fully fit and in good form.

Those 2017 draftees like Brayshaw, Banfield and Meek will help too.

That 2018 1st rounder in Sam Sturt, I hope he plays 10-15 games this year. He is coming off a knee injury.

Then you got the 2019 top 10 picks. Serong is a gun. Hoping he plays all 22 games this season.

Hayden Young shows some talent. I expect him to play around 10-15 games. I won't be surprised if he plays 20 games. There's a lot of young talent coming through in the last 3 years and are going to be rotated.

Liam Henry has talent. Showed flashes of brilliance last season. He just needs the endurance in his body to run out all 4 quarters. I dont mind him playing 10-15 games in 2022.

That bunch of draft picks from 2016-2019 are the next in line to help Freo go back up on finals in the post Walters and Fyfe era

Logue isn't the best player in the league by any stretch. Yeah he has played mainly in the back line.

As posted, he has played forward. Only kicked 1 goal in his career. Admittedly it was a beautiful set shot goal vs north in round 5 of 2017.

Yep that game when Shane Kersten kicked the winning goal with 30 seconds to go.

I would be surprised Logue having time in the midfield

Preseason training report#3

Who is there?
I think about 41 players, the only player not sighted that I am aware of was Hamling.

Rehab
Fyfe, Tabs, Walker, Tracy, Schultz
All are running and looked ok, just building fitness or getting over a minor niggle
Fyfe ran laps at a very good rate and is progressing at a rapid rate (still marking one handed) and did a lot of goal kicking
Young, Sturt, Benning and Amiss (who has a very significant left knee bandage) spent time in rehab and with the main group.

Injured possibly?
Lobb - was working on the cross trainer and finished abruptly and then could barely walk, must have strained a leg or groin going by the difficulty he had in walking back to the change rooms

Main training
Wilson and Cox back in main training
Johnson’s terrific kicking skills starting to stand out
Amiss spending time opposed to Pearce - what a lesson for the youngster
Chapman and Clark looking very composed and combining coming out of defence
Skills in the 13 on 13 full oval drills was only average with players still struggling to hit or find open players
Lots of running with Acres, Erasmus, Valente,, Mundy, Brodie, Crowden, Serong, O’Driscoll, Brayshaw and Johnson running in the midfielders group
Impressed by Darcy’s skills below his knees picking up the footy like a rover on numerous occasions

Forward Line
This is being run by Graham and Lecca and in my view there is significant improvement happening in conversion on goal and crumbing a goal. Lecca is massive for this group he had individual training with Sturt (close to not missing a single shot on goal), Amiss (also barely missed a goal) and then Western and Fredericks practicing crumbing goals - Western was clever and Fredericks has a lot of work to do on his forward craft.
Lecca was showing Sturt one of his skills which is to hold a ball and have someone kick the ball at the ball he is holding. Lecca would allow the ball kicked to him to hit the ball he was holding out of his hands and in the same motion catch the incoming ball, Sturt could not get this “party trick”.

Best signers of merchandise for the kids
Darcy, Switta, Son Son, Henry, Brayshaw and Western

Training the house down
Lecca - looks like he could still play but is adding a lot to our forward craft (yeah he is a coach but outstanding)
Son Son and Johnson kicking skills were outstanding

I get paid for this right????

I find it humorous that we have West Coast personnel teaching our guys how to kick goals. Freo would have made finals last year if they had West Coast's accuracy. Looking forward to the improved goal kicking!

Logue played the under 18's as the second ruck backing up English. From memory that's why his highlights for WA included a couple of goals. Logue's speed is needed in defence to play on quick smalls in my opinion as well as quick leading talls. I like him playing in defence and would like to see how he goes when Darcy is off the ground having Lobb start in the centre bounce and then Logue playing the role Acres played a bit of last year and being the ruck around the ground.

To think we had to kick 20 points or so to lose a game last year.

Thanks for the report! Greatly appreciated.

Has Chapman added much size? Height and muscle? He moves so well, if we can get a full season from him I think we will start to see some very good things after mid season if he doesn't tire.

Johnson - who would you say he kicks like in the team? Is erasmus far off his level (from the little you have seen).

Thanks again.

Fremantle Dockers training notes: Rory Lobb departs early, Neil Erasmus provides a spark

Rory goes back to basics

Rory Lobb’s return to Cockburn looks to have hit another snag after the big man limped from training on Monday morning.

After his attempted trade back to Greater Western Sydney over the off-season failed, Lobb returned to training in excellent shape and was one of several strong performers in last week’s time trials.

But what appeared to be a back ailment forced the 28-year-old from the track early.

Lobb spent some time chatting to medical staff before attempting to jog a lap of the oval, stopping after a quarter to walk and eventually returning to the sidelines after the pain failed to subside.

A dismayed Lobb limped back towards the club and gestured to his back but was redirected to a cross-trainer where he continued to train in less distress.

Erasmus excites

The biggest knock on Subiaco product Neil Erasmus heading into the draft was his disposal by foot.

But if two weeks can make a difference, it’s tantalizing to think what the bullish midfielder/forward can start producing in the early stages of his Dockers career.

While it wasn’t exactly a game-like scenario, the 18-year-old hit several bullet-like passes by foot and was also eager to involve himself in every chain of possession.

He provided spark and linked up several times with fellow emerging midfielder Caleb Serong.

Erasmus looks the most likely of Fremantle’s 2021 draft class to debut at this stage and topped off a promising session with a casual 45m drop-punt goal from right on the boundary.

Rehab ward

Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe looks to have stepped up his running program days after declaring himself an almost certain round one starter.

The Dockers are due to face the Crows at Adelaide Oval on March 20 and will likely do so with the two-time Brownlow medallist at their disposal after Fyfe revealed he was recovering as anticipated, if not better, from his most recent shoulder reconstruction.

The 30-year-old started off running the length of Victor George Kailis Oval before progressing to full laps, barely breaking stride.

Understandably, Fyfe continues to take a conservative approach with his right shoulder and stuck to marking one-handed but progress on that front appears imminent.

Luckless Docker Sam Sturt started training with the main group in a strong sign he is working back towards full health, before switching to the rehab group.

Hayden Young also appears to be close to fully recovering from recent small surgical procedure.

Caleb Serong and Luke Valente donned bright orange caps, instructing teammates to tread with caution, but both still trained with the main group.

Matt Taberner, Josh Treacy, Lachie Schultz and Brandon Walker were others to be managed in the final week before Fremantle head on Christmas break.

I thought Erasmus was 17. Did he have a birthday since the draft?

Remember the game well. Actually impressed with his leading and one on ones. Missed a few gimmes too. Had 4 shots from memory.
He should train as a forward. Fast, strong in the air, plays tall when really he’s medium. Can tackle and chase with his speed.
A better version of Mayne, which we’ve missed.
