Fremantle Dockers training notes: Rory Lobb departs early, Neil Erasmus provides a spark

Rory goes back to basics

Rory Lobb’s return to Cockburn looks to have hit another snag after the big man limped from training on Monday morning.

After his attempted trade back to Greater Western Sydney over the off-season failed, Lobb returned to training in excellent shape and was one of several strong performers in last week’s time trials.

But what appeared to be a back ailment forced the 28-year-old from the track early.

Lobb spent some time chatting to medical staff before attempting to jog a lap of the oval, stopping after a quarter to walk and eventually returning to the sidelines after the pain failed to subside.

A dismayed Lobb limped back towards the club and gestured to his back but was redirected to a cross-trainer where he continued to train in less distress.

Erasmus excites

The biggest knock on Subiaco product Neil Erasmus heading into the draft was his disposal by foot.

But if two weeks can make a difference, it’s tantalizing to think what the bullish midfielder/forward can start producing in the early stages of his Dockers career.

While it wasn’t exactly a game-like scenario, the 18-year-old hit several bullet-like passes by foot and was also eager to involve himself in every chain of possession.

He provided spark and linked up several times with fellow emerging midfielder Caleb Serong.

Erasmus looks the most likely of Fremantle’s 2021 draft class to debut at this stage and topped off a promising session with a casual 45m drop-punt goal from right on the boundary.

Rehab ward

Fremantle captain Nat Fyfe looks to have stepped up his running program days after declaring himself an almost certain round one starter.

The Dockers are due to face the Crows at Adelaide Oval on March 20 and will likely do so with the two-time Brownlow medallist at their disposal after Fyfe revealed he was recovering as anticipated, if not better, from his most recent shoulder reconstruction.

The 30-year-old started off running the length of Victor George Kailis Oval before progressing to full laps, barely breaking stride.

Understandably, Fyfe continues to take a conservative approach with his right shoulder and stuck to marking one-handed but progress on that front appears imminent.

Luckless Docker Sam Sturt started training with the main group in a strong sign he is working back towards full health, before switching to the rehab group.

Hayden Young also appears to be close to fully recovering from recent small surgical procedure.

Caleb Serong and Luke Valente donned bright orange caps, instructing teammates to tread with caution, but both still trained with the main group.

Matt Taberner, Josh Treacy, Lachie Schultz and Brandon Walker were others to be managed in the final week before Fremantle head on Christmas break.
Seems like we have some security with Erasmus shining. I’d still like to think he and Sturt playing together would be the best scenario.
We have improved offensively, and that is all you can ask for.
Look forward to actually watching Peel this year with the recruits.

Erasmus looks like he’ll step straight past Darcy Tucker into the wing role.

Agreed on Peel. I don’t think Erasmus will be playing at Peel much though 😁

I know Heath Chapman getting taller was the flavor of the month going into preseason, but has anyone noticed how tall Sam Sturt is now? He'd be the fastest key forward in the league.

I have Sturt as 189cm. That pic above is him near the 196cm Amiss.

I don’t think he is that tall, but looks taller than 189cm.

FreoFC website doesn’t help, as it still has last seasons players on the list.. ie Cerra, Etc.. bit amateurish of the Club not to update the players Lists and Bio’s to include the new, and out with the old.

Now if we can just get him on the park.

I don't think they update the website untill they do the team photo day.

Sturt is closer to camera and if he is halfway through a step at the highest point while Amiss is flat footed. That could account for some of the supposed 7cm height gap
Also there is so much light bouncing off him because of his alabaster skin tones that the photo is distorting like crazy.

I don't think Sturt is suddenly 196cm, as amazing as that would be, but their hips and right thighs look like they are in the same point of their stride and I think they are close enough to put a hand on the other's chest.

It's not in our interest to have up to date stats on the site. If an opposition club is lazy or doesn't pay attention and looks at our team sheet and matches a defender based on size then having to adjust their plan when they see Sturt commenting on his defender's bald spot coming in is valuable to us for the one or two times it happens.

As strange as it may seem, I don't really want to see Sturt at 196cm. I'd much prefer him around the 191-192cm mark with his current pace and agility maintained.

He'll be a brute of a matchup if that's the case.
i'd like him to be a Bailey Fritsch type forward for us. Leap to worry medium defenders and speed to worry tall defenders.

Probably better than me thinking "geez, Jye seems a bit short."

Both of those two pictured in the photo have the potential to become Freo greats if they can stay fit and healthy.

I’m seriously excited about what Sturt could become if his body allows. He does look pretty tall in that photo doesn’t he. Offensively he has every trick in the book and is a nightmare of a match up. He also knows how to find a lot of space inside the forward 50. Just needs to stick his tackles which should come with some continuity against mature bodies.

And on the limited I’ve seen and heard Amiss reminds me of JK the way he gets separation and generates shots from marks inside 50. He won’t have to be 200cm + as he is a genuine full forward.

I can seriously see these two forming a formidable combination for years to come (please God don’t f**k it up, we’ve endured so much already).
