Not suggesting that Brodie is close to this fella, but there was a player that played for the Blues. Couldn't run out of site in a week of Sundays. But won two Brownlows. Played 250 games between Geelong, Carlton and Sydney. Four times AA, premiership player 1995, Australian hall of fame, etc etc etc .The story goes on and on.
Just saying is all.
Interesting to note this bloke is generally regarded as one of the best hand ballers to play the game (along with the great Polly Farmer). It’s not a commonly held view but there are plenty who would actually rate him the greatest midfielder ever, albeit in a different era.

I think if you say athletic ability is all genes or not genes at all you've missed the boat. I know people like to play the "it's either this or that" game, but as with most things, it's a multitude of factors. Brodie may have a predisposition for muscle mass with more fast or slow twitch fibers, but this can also be altered with training...but only to a point. I would never be able to run sprints at an Olympic level, but I could improve my quickness to a point. I'm sure Brodie's genes play a role in the number of fast/slow twitch fibers, but training at an elite level will help influence that. But, in the end of the day, he just may not be the quickest guy on the team.

One thing I love about footy is that you need all kinds of players: Short and quick, big and tall, skinny and fast, short and thick, quick feet, quick hands, hard head, etc... Whether Brodie's skill set fits into our game plan/style and with the players around him will determine how much playing time he gets. Hopefully he's closer to Aish than to Acres in this respect.

Here some reading for those who want it:

I think I fall into this category just quietly lol.

Not sure that’s quite true tbh.

The games I remember Blakely playing he was either the sub or played out of position on the wing. I don’t remember him playing significant minutes as an inside mid.

He’s very clearly not part of our plans in the medium to long term. Would be shocked if he plays more than five games this year and that’s with injuries and Covid potentially playing a part.
He played in 11 games including the last four so half our season. Subs still count. He also was inside when Fyfe went out of the team in the last 4 rounds.

I never said he's part of our plans, I said Brodie is an upgrade on having to resort to playing Blakely.

Talent gets you through the door, hard work keeps you in the room.

If Brodie wins hands on the ball and we win clearances then I don't care if he isn't chasing enough defensively, it just means Darcy is more important.
Yes, clearances and tackling from Brodie (both of which he excels) will amplify Darcy's dominance. We got bullied by teams at times last year (Carlton  )

I am not really a Blakely fan, but he has his moments. Just butchers the ball too much.
But the other night I saw the round 20 game against Richmond, the game we won by five points.
In the last quarter he was very good. Getting the ball out of hard contests. His hand ball to players running past was very good.Helped us win that game in my opinion.

That player might not be playing AFL now.

Anyway, Greg Williams dominated the stoppages which made up for his slow spread.

A slow inside mid needs needs to be totally destroying the other team in the contest, otherwise they are net loss.

If Williams did somehow get a game these days, he'd only last 1 game before he'd be suspended.

The Blakely of 2017/18 was an exceptionally good handballer. Fast hands and a good decision maker. I do wonder whether the pressure of constantly playing for his place in the 22 (plus the issues with team mates following the Langdon affair) has impaired his judgement - we all have a propensity to make poor decisions when under pressure. The number of times he puts the player receiving the handball under pressure has (at least to my eyes) significantly increased in the last couple of years.

I thought the knock on Brodie was his endurance. He has really good speed so should be fine on the spread.

He just may may not play the same level of midfield minutes as a Brayshaw and spend a little extra time up forward.

One thing we do need is a stoppage specialists spending some time in the forward line to stop the ball moving out so often at pace.

Not everybody needs to play 90% game time.

In 9 VFL games last season Brodie averaged 31 disposals and 5.5 tackles per game. None of Valente, NOD, Blakley, Giro etc where doing anything like that in the WAFL

Those are impressive numbers. He sits somewhere between being the new Greg Williams and the new No-one-in-particular.

Brodie has a point to prove, and come hell or high water he aims to prove it.

That is the sort of dedication that makes it happen.

Ahhhh, the tail end of pre-season.... every year we go around and around in the same hypothetical circles.

I think I’d prefer to re-hash the Nat Fyfe goatee effect.

No politics in the pre-season thread.

I cant help but think WA being COVID free is going to completely screw Freo's season. Beyond maybe having no home games which in itself could screw the season. i.e. All the eastern states clubs are going to get COVID prior to the season while we will get it mid season.

Here is a guide on what is acceptable

Post 1: With the revised re-opening, we likely wont have any home games for the first month or two

Post 2: Chairman Xi McGowan will never re-open, we will be playing all games away this year

To protect the thread, the mod team will also err on the side of caution and delete anything that either looks remotely like politics, Covid or even looks like it has the potential to head down that way. Take it to the politics thread

All hail Chairman XI McGowan!!! Hehe

Fair enough, I'm hopeful that early momentum will remain even if we are playing away for a while and then hopefully a run of home games in the middle to end of the year where our younger players and older players who need more rest get to live at home for three months while opposition flies in.

I look forward to Melbourne based club supporters upset that Fremantle doesn't have to leave Perth for 9 weeks straight and it's such a burden on the clubs to fly in and out to contest the points against us.
