nice little article popped up today:

looks like foxtel posted a loss of $485 million for 2018 and are now looking to cut costs. the smaller sports like rugby and a league have been flagged to be on the chopping block. but their cost is relatively low. for foxtel to cut into the $485 million they're going to have to reduce costs much larger than that, which could affect the new AFL TV rights deal which expires in 2022.

which brings us to the AFL what are they doing? well there appears to be growth in streaming as opposed to pay tv, so they're actively seeking out the big players:

Foxtel has three streaming services it either owns or part owns. Foxtel Go and Foxtel Now, along with Kayo which many are moving over too.

So it makes you wonder what will happen to the TV rights in 2022 and if it will follow further global trends of a reduction in spend.

Eventually you will pay for games. Still cheaper than going for those who can’t or don’t want to go.

Hard to grow a sport when it's off FTA though.

What’s the combo of price and subscribers of afl live needed to cover going alone - I think that’s the future for the popular sports. Ch7 do the broadcasts in return for a couple of games a week
