Yeah it looked suspect with just Lobb as the only tall. But those days are over.
We need a Walters replacement, maybe Henry, but this is where the above guys
can play. But they are also versatile to play in dual positions.
I don’t see Wilson, Colyer, making it past 2023, so the club is all over it.

We need to move on from playing 4-5 small forwards. It has no benefit vs. playing 3. The pressure will be no different as hopefully we have shed the talls that don’t pressure. Lobb was probably the worst at providing pressure. Treacy and Jackson pressure far better than Lobb and Taberner. Hopefully Amiss, Treacy, Jackson is the 3 talls. Amiss needs a tank but has pace, so hopefully can pressure too. Taberner needs to be fit and mobile to make the 22 in 2023.

We too often played Schultz, Switta, Walters, Frederick and Colyer the latter replaced later in the year for a tiny bit of balance.

I'd go one step further and say we shouldn't just reduce it to 3, but down to 2. Geelong are the only side (except us) who play more than 2, and they balance the rest of their side by leaving a good player (but small) in Parfitt out when it comes to the crunch of finals.

Melbourne play at least 3.
Harmes, Spargo, Pickett and also Sparrow rotates through there

Today is like the Christmas period when you got your main present early (Jackson) and you’re getting * all on Christmas morning cos you’re seeing the family on Boxing Day and all you’re getting is a pair of ******* socks 😪😣

There's even a test match starting the day after we finally get to open some presents.

Harmes and Sparrow are 185cm and 183cm and built very strongly and are more midfielders than forwards. They are in the O'Meara mould, who I am more than happy to add to our mix. Freddy is the same height as Sparrow/JOM, but is not overly physical yet and plays more as a typical lightweight small forward.

If we are going for smallish forwards, I would hope it is Clarke or Burgiel who are at least around the 6 ft mark.

Agree but until our mids (Erasmus, Johnson) can demand a spot in the 22 they are in.
Frederick is practically a winger
Switkowski pinch hits in the midfield
Schultz gets way up the ground
So they are fulfilling game-day roles quite different to a traditional small forward. I mention the 3 above because they are the ones I would keep in.

Getting up the ground is standard these days. It doesn’t change the fact they are small forwards. There is perhaps only a handful of traditional small forwards who stay close to the goals, across the whole league. We play too many short players forward of the ball.

We play too many short players forward of the ball.

I'll agree with the caveat that it's to do with how slowly we move the ball coupled with the lack of marks our smalls forward of the ball take.

If we moved the ball faster then our smalls ahead of the ball could keep the "contest" more in the out working their opponent into space to take a mark on the lead. The slow ball movement lends itself more to bigger contested marking players.

Whether it's more likely to run and gun from next season or continue to hold the ball up from a sideways kick, time will tell. I've made my opinion on Acres doing this clear already, I suspect it's part of the game plan.

My literal exact thought driving into work today haha, Draftmas just isn’t the same when you are actually a decent team (and trade for an elite kid in trade period)

Gonna lock this up for a couple of days while the draft is on so get over to the 2022 AFL Draft Game Day thread to pick up the conversation.

Also a friendly reminder to vote for the best 2022 Game Preview if you haven't already.

Did Roger have twins?

Thanks, I didn’t think he had twins so the two Hayden’s threw me off.
The big Rodge is such a down to earth guy. Always has time to chat to us at Souths. He not only does the scouting for freo, but he makes time to watch both of his sons play at different times. I hope we see both of them in purple :)
