I think we must have made some kind of promise to Rankine's management to get him to commit.

We played hard ball with Dawson - and yet we came in day one with the absolute best available offer for Rankine so it would be done with almost no negotiating.

It is really frustrating.

Rankine announced he was seeking a trade in August, so we would have been negotiating for about 1-2 months at that point. Odds are we saw no pathways, or more likely considering how we set up our list in 2022, we didn't particularly care about the draft and were happy to pick up 1-2 sliders once we dealt with the Michaelanny bid.

Please put these folks right with what we offered up to clubs in Mattaes' hitting zone to try and swing a deal....unfortunately there were no takers mainly because the clubs involved all had desperate needs for mostly high end midfielders as well.

We may have tried, but considering there were no takers (and no genuine whispers of it), it shows we weren't willing to offer an amount that'll get the ball moving. I.e. when it comes down to it, we didn't care about missing out and were just scoping interest.

I have no doubt we inquired about every 1st round pick in the draft at some point with a preliminary offer just to get the lay of the land.

We didn’t go hard enough I don’t think though

We came late with some offers

We could have manufactured more and much earlier

Was almost token in the end

Agree

If we really wanted to get it done we could have made it happen

Port would have convinced one of their players to leave if they really wanted to do it

We didn’t want it enough and it will hurt our rebuild in medium term

There's something strange that went on.

Giving up a top five pick so quickly for Rankine seems at cross purposes with us also really wanting a top ten pick for a midfielder.

At the time, I thought we must have really not rated the top of the draft - but ultimately it's actually seemed quite decent.

Yeah, I don't get it.

Its yet another example of the club being far too conservative at the trade table..

This years 1st shouldve been thrown on the table last year along with other sweetners.

We needed to get that classy midfielder in last year.

Now we are gonna have a top 5 pick this year and it looks like there is gonna be bugger all classy mids available in the top 5…

A future 1st and 2nd is hardly token IMO.
We should have known earlier if it was going to get it done though

Even in your and my discussions it was only the last 3 weeks prior to draft we got really keen on Phillipou

Too little too late … especially since there were 3 main ones that would have helped us in that range McKenzie and Ginbey the capable back ups

Yeah doing due diligence on pick swaps right from the start of the off-season is v important. I remember the Freo/Port 2018 pick swap that basically allowed them to get Rozee was done early on

The closer you get to the draft, the more you’ll likely have to pay up

We couldn't have offered much more than a F1 and one of the extra F2's we had (rules!) unless we offloaded players.

Could have gone both 2nds if we wanted too. After all, we took Michaelanny in this draft to cover that need.

Well, no - can't trade a F1 and all F2s - remember it's either a (F1) or (F2, F3, ...) unless you brought in a F1 or F2,... etc.

Nah, you can. The ruling is you must take a certain amount of players in the first and second round in a two year period, unless you go for an exemption.

I think you'll find that's a special Geelong only rule.

... kidding aside, did they radically change the (F1) or (F2, F3, ...) rule? I know they've tinkered it so if you had an extra F2, you couldn't trade trade a F1 & F2 (unless you also brought in a F2 in the same trade.

Depending on the progress of Jed Walter and Tyler Welsh, perhaps a simple swap would suit both parties?

Our 2024/1 and 2023/2 for Gold Coasts 2023/1 and 2024/2.

Give both teams matching points while retaining 2 x first rounders over the two years (ours in 2023, Gold Coast in 2024)

I threw this into one of the threads a few days ago - I think it makes sense for both teams.

Evans looks good but Moir is very very very special....altogether different talent level.

Evans has good pace and tested very well for agility at the pre-season testing, plays similar Max Michalanney..
I don’t recall hearing about him. But he looks like he’s a good user and takes a nice grab.

Surely if we have pick 6 or 7 and Moir is there that we take him. Look very athletic and has a good leap and kick. That would complete our forward line. He is such a talent

Pretty good thinking

Smart to deal with GC with our future pick given they will want out of the 1st round this year

Been watching Walter and he’s battling a bit so far this year compared to expectation but still expect he’s 1st round

Another small forward?..

Would the crows Bigfooty board survive?

Can he become a mid would be the first thing I ask..

Lets say Rachele becomes a fulltime mid.. that opens a potential spot in the forward line..

But we are pretty full in that position list wise and that spot could easily be filled by Tyler Welsh the following year..

We need a high class mid with hopefully a big frame.. do we really need another small/medium forward?

That’s what I was thinking, Rachele to the midfield and it’s a much more talented McAdam.

Ashton Moir is not a small forward, he's 188cm and still growing.

He is a serious, serious aerial threat and can slot goals on either foot from 50+ metres out on angle you like to set him.
So he’s a small forward that might grow into a small/medium forward.. as I stated in the last sentence of my comment..

no matter how skilled and talented he is.. My question is, with our current very good small/medium forward stocks and another in Tyler Welsh probably coming in end of next year as currently another small/medium forward..

do we need another one in Moir?

or do we seriously need to add a pure, chock full of class, midfielder?

surely it’s the latter..

unless Moir moved into the midfield this year and showed he’s got what it takes..

We take the most talented player available at our pick and he's 6ft 2" in the old.....and he's local talent.
will he even be in our hitting range come years end is probably the biggest question..

what if we come 9th or 10th.. and have a pick in that 8-9 range..

Moir is being talked about as a possible pick 1 option.. so he‘s bound to be top 5..

if, by some miracle that could even be possible, we bomb out for the rest of the season and come last…

would you use pick 1 on Reid or Moir?…

Moir might be in Ports hitting range, oh wait
