Depends what you think the opposite of leadership is.
That’s an interesting angle. I guess the opposite is acting a way that makes others worse?
I agree that should be avoided.
But a person doesn’t have to a be a “strong leader” to avoid that.
Good character is absolutely enough - dedication, resilience, competitiveness, team-orientation, willingness to learn, being nice to team mates. If a kid has all that, it’s enough. No need for ‘leadership’. They can be a larrikin, or a recluse or a bit of a misfit. The main thing is they’re good at footy.

Leaders should emerge from among the best players on a list over time, no need to try finding them as 17 year olds.

Let me put it this way- what would you say if our recruiters told you they were choosing between two kids, both had great character, but they chose the one they thought had a bit less upside as player, because of his ‘outstanding leadership’.

You really need to move on...like I said the evidence is out there...leadership is valued by recruiters even if you personally don't see it as a big plus.

Some of those traits are interlinked with leadership anyway.

Not everyone has to be captain material, but leadership could mean something small like taking the initiative to help out a draftee settle in or develop part of their game that they might be struggling with.

I think you want someone who is strongly committed to their and their teammates improvement.

I'd probably prioritize competitiveness, if it was me. Hard to be a winner - or a leader - without deep down being a real competitor

That’s a poor take. Leadership is a massive component to teams working. Having a large group on the field with that confidence and ability to direct traffic is a huge advantage

It should be the cherry on top, not the primary aspect.

I want players that have the best skills and are competitive beasts first and foremost. Then if they are natural leaders, great. But I don't want plodders or bog average players that are great leaders

I think we should do recruiters the benefit of the doubt - they can prioritise leadership without de-prioritising actual footy talent.

I mean, isn't that how Haggis described players like Soligo? That they just know how to footy?
I'm not sure Haggis is a good example of recruiters priortising football talent

Agree with that. You need to be able to play first and foremost. But as others have mentioned as well. The keys then are character, competitiveness and leadership. All important components when selecting between similar ranked players

Teams in for this weekend's 2 U18's Nationals game.

Bodie Ryan, Tom Wheaton and Oscar Talbot look to be the outs, Harry Francis, Seb Wauer and Patrick Toole the ins. Key Forward Nate Caddy hasn't come up from illness so he's the big out for Vic Metro.

Interestingly SA only the one underager Sid Draper for SA whilst VM 5 underagers Jesse Dattoli,Jagga Smith, Levi Ashcoft, Josh Smillie and Harry O'Farrell in the named starting teams

Would have thought Docking and Taha would get a game, based purely off form. They should at some point, at least

Yeah was about to say, a lot of underage talent in that VM team

Is Aidan O’Driscoll related to Nathan? I assume Bo Allan is related to Ed, too
