Every year, the scribes say next years Draft is better .....it's like clockwork UNTIL the draft comes about

Lets face it ....no-one has a clue this far out, about this Draft

Gee, how good would it have been to get Ginby in last years Draft .....191 cm big bull !

HOW GOOD IS THIS YEAR’S DRAFT CROP?

It was considered a potential ‘Super Draft’ at one stage, but expectations have since been tempered a little about this year’s draft crop.

While most drafts have a lot of high-end midfielders, many of the top-10 prospects this year are talls – including the likes of Nate Caddy, Daniel Curtin and Archer Reid.

While some talls kick on and become superstars, there are also plenty of stories of key position players who have been high draft picks and have struggled to impact at AFL level.

“I don’t think there’s the midfield depth that we’ve got in other drafts,” one recruiter said.

They don't even pretend anymore.
Witht he Vic media in their pocket, there is no-one left to complain to. I'm not sure what we did, but they are determined to kill the golden goose in SA. And it's working. Watch the crowd numbers this year. It's going to drop significantly.

Is it as simple as we rejected Hutchy and he now runs half the media for the AFL. Port aligned with them - and Kane - and that’s tipped it?
Also there is a strong Carlton flavour to the written media over there and we were not popular with taking Jacobs Betts and Gibbs from them

Surely us taking Gibbs evens up the ledger

Star Melbourne midfielder Clayton Oliver has revealed how he left a pre-draft combine meeting in tears and fearing his AFL career might be over before it started after being called “fat” in a raw interview with Sydney.

Oliver had lost five kilos late in his draft year of 2015 as he worked to prove his fitness to wary AFL recruiters.
But as he detailed this week on former AFL player Tommy Sheridan’s Ausmerican Aces podcast, that wasn’t enough for Swans’ long-time recruiting guru Kinnear Beatson.

Oliver also detailed how he faked a hamstring injury in an effort to bypass the brutal beep test at the combine, worried it might hinder his draft hopes.

Is this draft very compromised at the top of the order? I've not really kept up on that this year.

It would be refreshing to not have a compromised top 10 given the events of the last 3 years.

Nah, gold coast have a very good academy prospect, which unlike other clubs, even at the top of the draft, theirs are protected. Key Forward.

Hopefully he can push into the midfield and show us all his skills in there..
Yep I agree with mutineer , it’s unlikely .

He’s a genuine forward Re Moir

We may need to look elsewhere re mids

Will Day as a trade would still be my preferred as a local and known quantity / huge talent

Others to keep an eye on this year in draft

Tholstrup WA ( reminds me a bit of cam Rayner so need to see that he’s a genuine mid still with his running etc )

McKercher TAS ( reminds me a bit of Dylan Shiel ) the Tassie thing with new team coming in puts me off a bit

Mcauliffe SA big bodied local, keen to see him at nationals at top level

Lorenz Vic to me he projects as an outside guy at AFL level damaging off wing or half back , we need this too but not with our pointy end pick

Will Graham a smoky from GC academy they might not be able to match bids as have 2 other tall prospects that will go early . He has some traits of Chad Warner strong contested game with blistering burst speed out of contest

It’s a strong draft but at this stage I’d say it’s strong for rucks and flankers rather than mids

Agree re your points , players always emerge

Will say at this point there aren’t many obvious elite mids like there might be at similar stages of other seasons

We could have got Ginbey .....this is what is upsetting

So we assume we held this years 1st round, because it was "supposed" to be a SuperDraft" ......well, the scribes are saying, more talls .....and is a good sprinkling of talls, is that how we define a SuperDraft 🤔

It's still disappointing to lose out on gettable Phillipou / Ginbey (who will be a star) .....and not have an alternate plan in place for 2023

We had to get aggressive and plan better re last years trade / draft

We liked the thought of Phillipou after the fact …. By time we came around our plan to get him wasn’t good enough

Getting Rankine was a huge tick but then we rested on our laurels

We could have got aggressive with GC over Ranks or aggressive with futures and players to get a spot to get a Phillipou Ginbey McKenzie all of which are just what we need

Looking at Phillipou play and realising he got to pick 10 and had only literally just turned 18 makes me feel ill

What a steal for St Kilda , be very surprised if we get someone better than his all round package including being tall big mid/ fwd , young for draft , local , huge talent, hugely motivated etc etc this year

It's almost the feeling, the Crows don't believe a big bodied MID is a need .....a classy mid, yes ....but not a big bodied

And is that because Ruck contests are getting fewer each year .....and the inevitable last touch rule, will reduce Ruck contests again

The Last Touch rule, IMO ...would have come in this year, if the AFL wasn't operating with a skeleton staff .....it was put on the back burner, until a new GM of Football is announced

This goes to the heart of our philosophy of trading / drafting and the mob down the road. We had pick 5, an F1 and gained an extra 2023 R2. Getting Rankine will be awesome - we had to do it BUT, could we have split pick 5 for a couple of 1sts??, traded one of them and a couple of 2nds for Rankine and kept a 1st in this round. I know we had Max M as a F/S and he was projected to attract a bid anywhere from the later part of the first round on so there was no point holding a late 1st. But could we have bundled our 2023 1st with a later 1st from the pick 5 split to get back into the top 10 this year should Phillipou have still been on the board for a live trade with a side??? I don't know the answers but I have not heard the club say we tried everything to get back in the frame for Phillipou.

Contrast that to the mob down the road - almost everyone to a man outside of their recruiting team thought they don't have the trade capital to get JHF..so what do they do, work up a complex 5 club trade option and not only end up with JHF but Rioli as well and did not have to trade a player as part of that when all and sundry said they would.

It seems like you say, we rest on our laurals and go 'well, we looked at things but we got Izak and Max M for some later picks and we got a steal in Dowling who we thought was going to go much higher...etc etc etc and the rest would have been too hard'

Port it seems say ' we have this but we are going to work every angle and push as hard as we possibly can to get what we want and be damned if we are going to die wondering'

I'd love to hear from the club honestly on what they really did to try to get draft collateral for Phillipou.

We went for Brown because of his height, we’ve referred to his point of difference a few times.

It’s just that Hamish doesn’t prioritise a good one. He has to go

...
This would have been possible only if we held on to pick 5, in which case we would have been able to get Phillipou once Ess passed on him. And did Ginbey at draft time look to be as good as he turned out so far?

There a lot of competing factors at play for us last draft.

Port look at what they need to get better in totalility then move heaven and earth to do it

Unfort for them for whatever reason under Hinkley it hasn’t got them as far as they could have hoped but gotta admire their intent to get better

Any of Phillipou Ginbey and McKenzie would have been in our hit zone for what we need

Any of those 3 would have suited us and might be better than options available this year although it is super early and plenty of time for mids to emerge

I think they see it as a need but not enough to compromise at the top end of he draft if there’s a kid they like but he doesn’t fit the height requirements.

Those 3 were taken at picks 7, 9 & 10 - again, we needed to hang on to pick 5 to have been able to get one of them.

So it might have come down to choosing between Rankine and one of them.

Could have got both if we really wanted to

There’s always a way … ask Port

I think we must have made some kind of promise to Rankine's management to get him to commit.

We played hard ball with Dawson - and yet we came in day one with the absolute best available offer for Rankine so it would be done with almost no negotiating.

It is really frustrating.

Of the 2 debutants last night Evans looks to have shone quite brightly with 17 touches and 6 marks.

Weckert a bit quieter with 4 and a goal although he’s a tall.

Looks like Evans might be worth keeping an eye on.

Do you have Weckert's testing times? might just be me but he doesn't look over endowed with pace or agility?

On Evans he looked even better than Max Michalanney last night considering he was on debut and has a similar game style to Max. If he keeps that type of performance up he's Monty to get drafted.
Sorry mate I don’t. Mate who knows his game pretty well down at Woodville says he’s a far better cricketer and they are expecting him back next summer
