Time for me to make my case!

The whole Jaylon Thorpe MSD concept was an out-of-the-box idea that seemed like a fun concept. Yet it has Teeth. Let me start with this proviso: IF there are no players that will potentially provide improvement to our lists long-term strategy. then Jaylon Thorpe could provide more than just his on-field performance. … as fun to watch as it would be.

cryptor said the list spot needs to be kept open for the National draft but triple treat said the player could be delisted at the end of the year meaning the spot would still be open… which cryptor agreed with. If Jaylon is agreeable to a 6 month shot in the big-show then I’d expect he would jump at the chance. There would be no relocation or disruption for him. Such a situation would enhance Box Hill‘s reputation as the go-to club for aspiring AFL players who missed out on the National draft. The value of this cannot be underestimated. At the very least it enhances the quality of players wanting to play for Box Hill, which would help our young players to experience finals, if not a GF win. Geelong’s 2002 VFL winning team included J. Bartel, Stevie J, Paul Chapman and G.Abblet jnr. That sort of experience served them all well for their careers to come.

Jaylon would not take a spot in the Fwd line from anyone… they would lose their spot to him And have to take it back. For those that do not know, he can go into the ruck and wins a surprising number of centre bounces. That is to say that he can, in a pinch, relief ruck. Could he take Kosi’s spot?

Be clear, I want the Hawks to pull a gem from the footy mine as much as anyone, and Buller/Teal/Maric/Tucker or what’s-his-face all look OK prospects. If we choose any one of them I’ll be in their corner. But if we take any one of these guys and then delist them in 6 months… especially the interstate boys, I would have preferred 6 months of Jaylon.

The advocate for Jaylon rests.

If we was contending for a premiership in 2023 an needed a forward/ CHF, i would be keen to roll this kind of dice. #Pass

Just an older player who will take away from developing another younger player. Id rather Jeka get another shot and Serong if he is fit, get a crack at CHF.

I'm not sure how a sign and ditch 6 months later is enhancing Box Hill's reputation. We'd be asking him to essentially quit his job and asking put his life on hold for 6 months. These contracts don't pay much, league minimum salary for 6 months is not an enticing carrot for a bloke in his late 20s. Even if it was a good idea for us, he probably wouldn't go for it.

Also your concerns about 6 months for the interstate boys, it wouldn't happen. We're not desperate for depth for a finals run and we're not trying to cover a bunch of injuries. Other posters have already made the point that we wouldn't bother wasting a list spot and club resources unless we were willing to make a real investment.

Serong, needs time to develop in the VFL. This is as certain as the world being round.

The push by some in BigFooty Hawks to get AFL games into young players does my head in.

Give them time in the VFL to learn running patterns, put on size, and learn how to win (which will not often happen in 2023 in the 1sts). Getting AFL games into some players will harm them more than help them.

Aside: Jaylon is a free hit… IF a better option for the Hawks list is not out there, and we pass… I’ll be pissed.

You make good monetary points For Jaylon. But tell me … if you could have 6 months as an AFL player… would you take that opportunity?

And if you asked your boss (what is Jaylon’s job?) to have 6 months to chase your dream… maybe his boss would find a way to help you.

Kermit says,” Also your concerns about (taking and then dumping a player from interstate within) 6 months for the interstate boys, it wouldn't happen.”

Would it not happen?!. at the Hawks? Or in the AFL? How can you say that and do you know the history of MSDs?

Jaylon will likely never see an AFL field and I know that. But if he did, we would all love him for making our footy watching more fun (while our boys develop in the VFL).

Thanks to cryptor and triple trust for adding info.

My advocacy is now done.

Love you left field thinking Alite and I love watching Jaylon too I wonder what he could have become if developed at the highest level from draft age. At least we have him at box hill and now with televised games it’s a must watch! I like the look of teal maric and to a lesser extent Ziggy so if our recruiting team are aligned I suspect we take the pick. Hoping for real think he could be a gem and already has defensive want and good skills.

I know that in the time since the MSD was introduced, we haven't taken a player for 6 months. My post explained why it wouldn't happen. We're not looking for a sugar hit player for a run into finals, and we're not looking to cover a massive injury list. We're only in the business of finding long term players at the moment, a 28 year old Jaylon Thorpe isn't that.

We’ll just take best talent. It’s what you do.
We have to but also there isn’t a player out there that we could expect to come in and fill a positional gap better than what we have in 2023. Maybe maric but no one else. So we are going to be better served going best talent and deal with any ‘problem’ having too much talent creates later.

Haha this is the same bloke who reckons that footy fans shouldn't wear guernseys to games because that's not cool. FMD.

He has a point with that comment though
