List Mgmt. 2023 AFL Draft

It will be interesting to see where Nathan Philactides lands. Amazing athletic profile but 180cm small defenders probably not high on draft list priorities. He has been highly rated skills-wise for a long time but not expected to feature in the first two rounds.

If he was there for a second pick if we choose to use one, it would be tempting.

Perfect player for Ken to try and turn into a defensive forward.

The below optimal height player can often prove to be a great draft steal. Lachie Neale drifted late, Zorko was overlooked for years, Papley was a rookie listing, Betts was a pre-season dratee, Charlie Cameron was a rookie and Harbow was also a rookie. Given where we are selecting from and the current balance of our list I reckon we would be wise to consider fast, elusive and skillful traits before a players height.

It's a pretty good highlights package for Philactides. Damaging ball use and good speed. Arguably a better package than Joshie Sinn. I guess the defensive stuff could be a concern.

He was touted as one of the top 10-20 prospects as an underager so it is a bit of a fall. Suits our needs decently.

Cal Twomey's phantom draft whispers for Port

Picks: 69, 83, 87 (likely to use two selections)

It's a wait-and-see-who-is-there type of night for the Power recruiting team, which has the latest start to the draft of any club after its huge haul of four players in the trade period. But Port has been prepared for that situation through the year and will have been looking at its order a little differently to other clubs. Their first pick will likely end up being around No.50-52 once bids come in and other clubs start to pass. The likes of Sandringham forward/midfielder Harvey Johnston, Oakleigh midfielder Will Lorenz and Greater Western Victoria small forward Lachie Charleson are likely to be around that stage of the draft, while the Power have also looked at midfielder Liam Walters, who attracted some interest late in the year. Port Adelaide is another club who could look at George Stevens if he is still on the board. Local Loch Rawlinson is a small forward who may have appeal late.

Looking at the profiles of the above, Johnston apppears to have most of the desirable traits Port should be looking for.
Guess it depends on who slips through to our picks as much as anything else.

If you want pace, Walter's aint your man. But he would suit our forward line.

Liam Walters - Mid/Fwd

Height: 185cm

Weight: 78kg

STRENGTHS:

  • Clean hands
  • Decision making
  • Defensive pressure
  • Dual-footed

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Endurance
  • Speed

One of the late bloomers this season, Oakleigh Chargers' Liam Walters finished the Talent League off strongly and defied the need for state representation by receiving a State Combine invite. With clean hands and great decision making on either side of his body, Walters caught the eye of recruiters in an Oakleigh crop dominated by bottom-age talents.

Adding to his value in possession, Walters also adopts a high pressure gamestyle, averaging almost four tackles per game at Talent League level. Walters' main area of improvement comes from his athletic base, with his speed and endurance his key areas that lack compared to others. He does have a lot to like as a natural footballer and potential rookie option.

Looks to me like we will pick one of Johnston/Lorenz as cover for the loss of Duursma, and then one of Charleson/Walters to cover for the loss of Fantasia.

I don't get excited over potentially drafting a small/medium defender anymore, after the high expectations I had for Mitch Farmer 😞

I cant recall Mitch farmer having much endurance. Was run ragged by a small collingwood forward at footy park. Take your point though. Will be v interesting the type of player we select. I think we will take 2

Parker doesn't mind springing a surprise with a late pick. Amon, Hayes, Visentini, Kyle Marshall are a few I don't recall being linked to us pre-draft.

The names that have come up all have qualities that would complement our list, but Parker can be slippery. ;)
