Not really, they have been very creative and smart to get there ...

How Suns turned unneeded draft pick into six first rounders

Riley Beveridge assesses how the Suns turned pick No.4 into six first rounders

THE AFL has abolished a draft loophole that allowed clubs to gain an advantage by stockpiling back-end picks.
The league on Monday night ruled that clubs could enter this year’s draft only with the number of selections that matched the number of open spots on their list.

Gold Coast currently have 37 players on their senior list, which means they have 1-3 open spots on their list.

The reason I say 1-3 is because they have 7 category A rookies (other clubs 4-6) due to the concessions they got a few years back, which included Noah Anderson and allowed up to 10 rookies. You would imagine they no longer have those concessions in 2024 but I’m not sure there was ever an end date. Absent that, they would only have 1 open list spot.

Gotta be kissed on the dick like GC are. An array of top quality academy picks + a top 4 pick. I mean it's an absolute s**t tonne of draft currency.
I will defend the Suns' situation ... they have become the recruiting field for the Vic & SA clubs. They need the Academy for them to source players that are happy to remain in QLD, and eliminate the go-home factor.

At some point it will even out, and the AFL will need to limit their sole access to the players in the Academy. But at the moment, they need the leg-up if they are to survive.

Source players like Jack Bowes?

Shock! ... Horror! Player not getting selected seeks better opportunity.

Who'd have thunk it?
I’m with you on the academies for northern states but the Bowes trade was diabolical.

Local kid, trained in the academy. Why did the Suns need to over pay him in the first place? Wouldn’t he want to stay there? Surely they had the best read on his abilities, why overpay him if you knew he wasn’t what you needed and wasn’t good enough?

Then to trade out a first rounder to get him off the books, just after asking the afl for help. And Geelong apparently wanted him anyway, the premiership side wanted him and played him regularly.

Whole situation was ridiculous.

True, that plus the free draft pick to the reigning premiers was a joke, and should never have been allowed! But, for some reason he wasnt getting selected at the Suns ... couldnt find a position for him.

What they were allowed to do with his contract was also a disgrace.

Nathan Philactides

I'm surprised they've got him at the 40/60 draft range. I'm sure he's rated higher elsewhere.

They do mention composure and defensive craft need work and being a defender that might be an issue.[emoji848]

Didn't test at the national combine due to injury but was outstanding at the mobility test at the preseason combine.

End of 1st round compensation to @stkildafc for Jade Gresham’s FA exit to essendonfc Expect freodockers to ask for that pick (which will end up in the 23-26 range) in exchange for Liam Henry.

Lol how could it end up in the -26 range?

It’s an end of first round and our 2nd rounder we hold is currently pick 25.

Whatever pick it currently is is the pick it will be. There’s no more big name free agents or compo picks to be handed out.

Sounds like a philosopher. The Theorem of Philactides.

Essendon have played free agency quite well this year. Signed Redman and Parish. Signed McKay, the best of the available key defenders. Also brought in Gresham who will be solid and Goldstein who should be a good mentor for Draper and Bryan. Making the most of it while they aren't losing any compensation for their own players.

Who says no to this deal with GC?
We know the pick theyre jumping us with Esava so that pick is mute as its him in the ND (or Geelong take it)
Presuming that a F3 is Sweet so it makes 48 not needed
And it bumps 41 up 9 spots whilst giving GC 50 odd pts
