Make it so only picks in the round and following round can be used to matched.

Stops 1st round talents being bought with late picks.

I was surprised West Coast only drafted one player. They were hamstrung in that they had to take the generational talent which will pay off down the track whether he stays or goes.

But there's not much there to suggest that they will be leaping off the bottom of the ladder any time soon. They really needed to split the #1 pick into 2 or 3 picks.

Meanwhile the AFL throws picks at North Melbourne.

West Coast, like Collingwood and Richmond, will always be a top flight destination club. I think they did the right thing for them, draft the elite talent and plan to trade in the rest.

The fact their 2nd pick is 30 is a bit of a joke though.

One thing that hurt them the past few years is Nesbitt interfering in trading. They could have offloaded some ageing stars but the payoff they were after was too rich for most.

It will take them a few years to catch up. They've been bumping along at the bottom of the ladder for a couple of years now and not much to show for it.

Nothing new from Fox Footy ... Delean and Callinan not mentioned at all in this look at tonight's potential draftees.

The Power have been strongly linked to GWV Rebels small forward Lachie Charleson and Oakleigh Chargers midfielder Will Lorenz. But whether they get through to Port remains unclear, as Charleson has interest from West Coast and Lorenz has been linked to the Western Bulldogs.
Other players in the Power’s mix include Harvey Johnston (Sandringham Dragons) and local product Loch Rawlinson (Sturt).

One theoretical change I've heard is that Round 1 should be compromise free. No acadamy, no FS, no compo, no priorities, no trades. Each club gets a pick of the best 18 (19 with Tas) kids in reverse ladder order, then open slather from Round 2 onward.

I think F/S should be the only untouchable, the rest all sounds great

LIAM FAWCETT (Central District) Key forward 198cm 87kg

An outstanding talent who can be a difficult match-up for defenders with his ability to lead hard and also take contested marks. He’s athletic, loves to get up the ground and can win plenty of the ball for a big man. Kicked 31 goals from 16 under-18 games this year. Ran a quick 20m sprint at the state draft combine, highlighting his athleticism, but scouts want to see him work a bit harder and apply more defensive pressure.

And talking of key forwards from SA:

HARRY FRANCIS (Glenelg) Key Forward 196cm 80kg

Athletic big man rucked for Glenelg’s under-18s this year but, at 196cm, he probably won’t be able to do that effectively at the next level. But he is a real athlete who can use his combination of height and mobility to his advantage. Has yet to regularly showcase his marking ability as a forward but is clean below his knees and efficient with ball in hand. Displayed his athleticism at the state draft combine by winning the running vertical leap with a height of 95cm while producing a strong leap of 69cm in the standing vertical jump.

PATRICK WECKERT (WWT) Key forward 194cm 90kg

The strong-marking key forward entered the season as one of SA’s top draft hopes after turning his back on a promising cricket career (as a fast bowler) to focus on football. Started the year in the Eagles’ league team but struggled to make an impact and performed below expectations at the AFL under-18 national championships. However he finished the year strongly, kicking five goals in a reserves semi-final against Central when he took six strong marks. State under-18 coach Tony Bamford noted how Weckert “approaches the game in a physical manner’’.

Yes, this. People saying it 'needs to be fixed' are missing the fact that the inequity is intentional. The AFL have never given a shit about equity in any other aspect of the game's administration, why do we think that drafting would be any different?

A tall forward who doesnt apply enough defensive pressure. Spud. List and then Delist. Then sign an elite running alongside his opponent small forward in the mould of you know who.

We needed ready made rucks and key defenders. We are not getting that in a draft.

Agreed, I am just not sure we needed two of each. I would have been happy with Ratugolea and Soldo and hung onto a third round pick or two. But we will give those traded in the chance to show what they can do. We probably have two years to get a result as trading out a draft year will eventually catch up with us.

We go with what we have and hope we can jag a decent player at #73. I will tune in tomorrow as I will probably be asleep when our turn comes around.

Are they a destination club? Almost nobody who isn't from WA originally requests a trade there. And if anything, the majority of those returning WA players have historically ended up at Freo.

Meanwhile the AFL throws picks at North Melbourne.

Interestingly North Melbourne used a pick on Taylor Goad from South Adelaide. The last player they drafted from South did not turn out well for them. They also used a top ten pick on Zane Duursma who may one day feel the need to play along side his brother at Essendon.

Adelaide on the other hand passed up the chance to take Goad and went with a West Australian who did not look overly rapt to be heading to Adelaide plus they took two Victorians and down the track they will probably wonder why they cannot hold onto players.
