List Mgmt. 2023 AFL Draft

I liked how we were able to use the 2 future fourth round picks and the 4th rounder for this year that we got from Essendon in the Duursma for Zerk-Thatcher trade to get two third round selections this year to snare two promising small forwards and a composed wingman with the remaining pick which also came in as a third rounder. Maybe the Durrsma trade will be a good win for us afterall.

Our draft hand was ordinary, so you couldn't expect to find too many gems amongst the rubble this year.
The likes of McAuliffe, Johnston and a few others went before we picked too.

Two small pressure forwards is too much like McEntee for my liking. All small forwards these days should be able to apply defensive pressure anyway.

I want blokes who are natural goalscorers - but we all know Ken will never play them 😒

A skinny wingman filled out our picks 😐

Hopefully we get a 4th ruckman in the rookie drafts as a project to develop over the next 3 to 4 years by which time Soldo will be almost ready to retire.

Next year we target an inside mid successor to Ollie, and another KPF come Draft night.

We ****en did it

Tom Anastasopoulos - FWD - Geelong Falcons/Vic Country

176cm, 65kg

His stock is rising but not projected to go in the first couple rounds. We are due a good Greek boy on the list that isn’t a complete bust.

Rookie Me Central:
The crafty Geelong Falcons prospect has certainly made an impression in his four Talent League outings this season. He booted 12 goals (and just one behind) across the first month, including five against Oakleigh in Round 2 to earn Player of the Week honours. With speed, a sharp step, and smarts around goal, Anastasopoulos has worked away at his improvement areas while allowing the aforementioned strengths to shine. He’ll more than likely slot straight into the Vic Country forward line, with potential to pinch-hit further afield.

Please Port.

Our draft hand tonight reminds me of a Choco anecdote I heard years ago from a former player.

Two new guys we drafted arrived on day1 for training and Choco says to one,

"you've probably got about 100/1 shot of making it, that's the reality of AFL, so put your head down, work hard and above all, listen"

He looks at the second guy and says "Not sure why your smiling, you're about 150/1 chance, see you on the track".

I have a feeling one was Wade Thompson , so he wasn't wrong.

Inside mid is about to become a massive area of need.

Wines will be 30 next year and already might be cooked.

Drew is a free agent next year.

And that’s it for real inside mids. The next closest is Jhf, who is a clearance beast but not the guy we want to be our inside in and under player.

I can’t see us moving Spp back onto the ball, and he’s more a physical burst onballer rather than the in and under inside mid drew is anyway.

So there’s zero depth there really. None in the magpies next year, again we will be relying on top up players like Moore to play a key role in the centre at the magpies.
Don’t write off Jackson Mead just yet.

Feels like Parker got the players he set out to get. Time will tell if they are the right picks but at least they are the right types.

On a side note, our media team are 2 from 7 on highlights videos this offseason…

What makes people assume that Anastasopoulos and Charleson aren’t capable of being goal kicking small forwards?

They read the word pressure in their profiles and that's all they remember.

Charleson is one of those old-fashioned rovers who rested in the forward pocket and kicked goals.

Anastasopoulos is a lightweight but when he puts on some extra kgs can be a potent forward goal kicker.

I like all of our picks, Lorenz has some genuine class and is a fierce tackler.

It's only a matter of time " all of these players were born 2 to 10 months after Ken took over at Port."

Even more sobering is the fact that the players we drafted last night were born in 2005 which is the year after Port won it's last Premiership. We now have players who weren't even alive when Port last won a flag.

Given the hand we started with the horse trading worked to our advantage. I am happy enough with what we got but it is really a case of wait and see.

We seem to have employed the principle that if you keep loading up on small forwards sooner or later you will get one who can actually kick goals. I hope it works.

If Dylan Williams was upgraded from the Rookie List in August I assume the same happened to Jed McEntee?
