My impression is now that clubs from pick 40 onwards are merely filling mandatory list spots as the talent has more than dried up. There never seemed to be the news from the experts of draft sliders in this draft which is not a good sign of the abundance of talent.

Which begs the question, why on earth would Port trade out of the top end with who they got in? Port just seem to be drafting smalls now with which they have an over abundance of dud smalls as it is.

So having multiple small forwards matches them having multiple ruckmen.

Cash Deer plays like Aaron Naughton....Big call?

I've watched his highlights, and I have no issues at all with his talent - he looks like a gun. I get that he has midfield traits, and has been successful in that role as a junior. But he was asked directly where he would like/expect to play at AFL level and he said defence. Not "defence first up and then we'll see", not "wherever the club wants to play me". He just said defence. Hamish spoke about him as a defender. And when asked about the possibility of him being a midfielder, Hamish seemed to shrug it off. His comments sounded to me like he was saying "the time spent playing midfield as a junior will help round out his game" but that the club still saw him as a long-term defender. One who gets the ground ball well and has a great kick, sure, but a defender nonetheless.

I hope he does end up as a midfielder - we need one a lot more than a KPD. But it somehow feels like every year we take a talented player and then hope they will successfully switch positions. Rachele is a talented small forward, maybe he can move into the midfield one day. Rankine, ditto. Thilthorpe a talented ruck, perhaps he can be a KPF? For once I'd like to see us say "here is a dominant midfielder who plays in the midfield, we are expecting him to be a midfielder at AFL level."

My main concern is that we are spending all our best picks upgrading positions we've already filled with decent (or better than decent) youth (forward, defence), while neglecting positions of significant need (mid, ruck).
Rachele is a midfielder though, he was drafted as a midfielder. It's fairly clear that his fitness needed improving, but he's only continued to play more midfield minutes as he gets more experience. Not all of these kids are midfielders from day one, Butters certainly wasn't and Rachele is on a very similar trajectory in terms of midfield minutes in year 2.

Rankine is an elite small forward that will play some midfield minutes, but he's a match winner as a forward. Again, still only 5 years into the system. Can't ever see him being a full time midfielder, but we don't need him to be if you have enough that can rotate through mid/forward (Rachele, Pedlar and now Edwards too).

Ogilvie is also not a coach, he does not dictate where Nicks and his coaching team play him. Given his supreme utility to play anywhere on the ground, do you actually think AFL level coaches aren't going to explore him in a variety of positions? At worst we maybe end up with a gun utility like Blicavs or a gun KPD like May, at best he's an A grade midfielder in the same mould as Dawson. Curtin are Reid are the two that not many have had any doubt would be elite talents and at the pointy end of this draft 18-24 months ago.

Look at how Sydney's recruiter described Dawson when drafted: Selection 56 - Jordan Dawson

Not if the coaches can help it, after all, utility is only valuable if a player is mediocre in their primary position.

It’s amazing reading about all the great drafting on this second night and some by Port.

So thoughts of those who defended the club in not having any list spots in case we wanted to get back in? Mostyn thiughts?
I wish we had more list spots
