Game Day 2023 AFL DRAFT

Just wanted to make some points regarding giving Sloane 1 more year .
We could have sent him off at last home game as a champion of the club .
Can anyone seeing him getting picked every week so apart from where club tag as resting him I wonder how he and club will handle him being dropped to SANFL .
It just isn't going to end up nicely for club or Sloane who will not play regularly in SANFL .
It is just going to look like Crows handling badly there champions . AGAIN

At this point, the only way I see Sloane getting a gig is injuries or Matt Crouch reverts to being a crab again.

However, this is on the money. We've chosen a path that no matter what we likely do, we're handling the end of Sloane career at Adelaide poorly. Plays best 22 and is a liability because he was borderline it this year and it's clearly father time that's caught up with him - i.e we're selecting him because we can't let go. Plays SANFL and that's an undignified end to what has been a good servant for Adelaide. Something which shouldn't have happened to Thommo and shouldn't to Sloane.

The only way I reckon it doesn't end badly is if Sloane becomes a professional sub, however, the AFL community seems very resistant to the idea of having someone play every week as a substitute.

What were the options to get back into the draft?

We already used 1 of our future 2nds to move up the draft. We had to keep our future 1st and 2nd to leave the option open to get a pick in before Welsh. So we're talking about trading back in with a future 3rd or 4th.

You're advocating for more picks in the 40s/50s/60s whilst the club are actively trading up in the draft.

I wouldn't have given Sloane a contract but I'm fine with the strategy of concentrating at the early part of the draft.

Is there an element of FOMO at play here? You were watching the coverage, hearing that these picks in the 50s/60s are complete steals etc. They say that every year.
Yes there is a fear that we have overlooked a potential 15 year player because we kept a cooked 34 year old. But it wasn’t FOMO after watching the draft, reckon I raised it once or twice pre draft ;)

As in terms of trading back in, we’ve got a number of players we will move on next year that could get us a 3rd or 4th rounder, plus we could always trade 2025 picks into next year.

My main issue with all this is we didn’t even give ourselves the option, we had no flexibility because we kept a cooked 34 year old for one more year.

I’ll refer back to Ogilvie pre draft:

“We have no capacity to take a 4th player even if we wanted to pick up a slider like Dowling last year”

He didn’t need to mention it, clearly it was on his mind.

lets agree to disagree mate. i think we have covered all bases now

i certainly understand your position and - as clearly mentioned - agree with everyone basically saying he should NOT have been re-contracted but it was also obvious it was happening as I reported after hearing Silvers speak at the pre game Lions game this year and reporting back to all on here (and for reasons that werent predominantly playing related).

We just had a great national draft - the most exciting in many years with a chance with Curtin we have just discovered our MOST elite player. I am personally moving on to that as Sloane is done and dusted for 2024 - now out of our (clubs) control so personally moving on, cheers
The thing is it’s you, Mostyn and some others who have tried to shut down the impact on keeping Sloane. You don’t have to react to posts bringing it up.

We have also brought Burgess in who also pushed Borlase down the order. Murray, Butts, Worrel, Curtin, Keane, Burgess and Borlase.

We shouldn't have promised to rookie him, it should have just been we will 'look to rookie him'. I would rather now that we rookied a project ruck or a small forward. We are now in good shape with our key defenders depth wise.
I'm more concerned about our KPF holdings. Himmelberg is almost certainly gone next year, and Walker is not a year-to-year proposition (due to age, not ability). Potentially, we could have just Fogarty & Thilthorpe going into 2025 (plus 1st year F/S recruit in Welsh).

And Curtin and Burgess

And Curtin and Burgess
Curtin primarily a defender, who has ambitions of moving into the midfield. Has the ability to play forward, but I wouldn't list him as one of our KPFs. It will be interesting which group(s) he trains with over the summer.

Burgess, fair enough. He was recruited as a defender, but spent most of 2023 playing as a KPF in the state leagues - and did an excellent job of it by all accounts.

It's still an area of concern. The most glaring deficiency though remains the lack of a developing ruckman.

I think if we had any concerns with a lack of forwards we could put Curtin into the forward line which we couldn't do with our other defenders

The AFL mandates that clubs make a minimum of 3x selections in the ND, noting that rookie upgrades count towards this total.

Did Port upgrade any rookies? They may well have had no choice but to make 3x late picks.

Some are talking list flexibility (Sloane etc), well now the Power are locked into 3 late picks for 2 years each.

You shouldn't be at this stage.

Outside of Tex, Fogarty has now put in two seasons where he's been a 30+ goal forward as a no.2 and as a no.3 Thilthorpe is building nicely - though looks like he needs more responsibility. Depth wise, Gollant - who we use exclusively as a KPF - Burgess and Himmelberg are all fine options in a pinch.

On top of having a combination of Rankine/Rachele/Pedlar as a support staff and a game style which is conducive to KPF play.

It may morph away from the three-headed monster kind of forward line we had this year, but this is a sector that is looking very healthy moving forward. The only real concern is if we see TT as a long-term ruck seeing he's the best equipped to being a line-leader here. That said, I reckon the only thing it really needs is another ruck/KPF to cover 2nd ruck duties regardless what we do with TT and I'm somewhat hopeful Toby Murray is an answer seeing if he's anything like his brother, he'll be a fun footballer to slot in.

Fogarty went backwards in 2023. However, that was probably due to the knee injury he suffered early in the season - and an associated loss of confidence from returning while less than 100% fitness. I have high hopes that he'll return to his 2022 form in 2024.

I forgot about Gollant, so fair call there.

They're not KPFs, and their games will suffer if our KPFs fail to perform adequately. They are, however, excellent players in their own right.

We'll have to see what happens with these players. Toby Murray won't be on our AFL list in 2024, unless we lose a player to a season-ending injury, allowing us to grab him in the MSD.

Yeah, I'd prefer to go into next year with a full set of '24 and '25 1st and 2nds. We're now in an okay position. A chance to take a 1st before Welsh.

We may be looking at a few list changes next year, will need multiple picks for Welsh (more if we want to get in ahead of a bid) and will need a few more maybe late to make up list spots. Chewing into that just to take someone in the 50s....

This subject comes up every year, it's not without merit, I was pretty happy to land Nankervis for example.

Yes, but landing Nankervis didn't require us to delist an extra player. We were planning on going with a 37/5 list structure, and they changed that to 38/4 when Nankervis was available.

Nankervis cost us an extra position on the rookie list, not a player delisted from the senior list.

He also didn't require us to trade future picks for.

Just referring to every year people look at the players still leftover and get excited.

Maybe there is more of the 2nd half of our last game.

Filthy number 1 ruck with burgess/himmelberg/gollant as the 3rd forward /2nd ruck?

Then we would have “3 rucks” on our list.

What the club says:

"It went to plan. It was probably a pretty bold move to go up and get Dan Curtin, but that certainly wasn't a plan four or five weeks ago that we thought was going to eventuate, to get a player of Dan's quality. Everyone knows how highly he was rated in this draft. His versatility, at 197cm he's played midfield, so we were just thrilled to get him in and it was great to see him and his family last night. Charlie was always in our thinking. To add two players over 190cm that have both played a lot of midfield was a real bonus." - Crows national recruiting manager Hamish Ogilvie

They very much will see Curtin as a mid me thinks

Clubs were trading back in with future 3rds, reckon we could have spared that

Waiting for Crocmedia to proclaim Port won the draft...

Over on the Port board old Clapped-out Corolla has already done it

Crows draft was fkd because North picked Goad so clearly Edwards is shite, no one knows who Ryan is so he’s shite, and Curtin will go home soon so we’re totally fkd

Meanwhile they chose three small forwards which is exactly what they needed and they’ll all succeed and they nailed their draft needs 🙄

Burgess can play forward.
Reckon Murray could too if needed.
Curtin can play both ends.
