The Carlton Consensus Team is returning for the 2023 season, season 6 of the Consensus, and once again I'm stepping in to temporarily relieve Matty411 of duties.

On the other side of quiet trade, FA, DFA, & rookie draft periods but a busy national draft by recent standards, we're left with an almost full list of 43 players for Voss' second season. That's 36 Senior players, 6 Category A Rookies, and 1 Category B Rookie. The only available list spot being the 2nd Cat B rookie position which we're unlikely to fill.

There were a few changes to the 2022 list with 8 officially departing (includes Jones from a list sense even though he left us last year) and 5 new faces coming in the door.

Departed: Will Setterfield (traded), Liam Jones (retired), Will Hayes (delisted), Oscar McDonald (delisted), Jack Newnes (delisted), Luke Parks (delisted), Liam Stocker (delisted), Tom Williamson (delisted)

Arrivals: Blake Acres (Fremantle), Ollie Hollands (pick 11), Lachie Cowan (pick 30), Jaxon Binns (pick 32), Harry Lemmey (pick 47).

I think this is said every year, but there's going to be some very unlucky players to miss out and this will undoubtedly be the hardest to date.

For those new to this thread, here’s out it goes down:

The Rules
We will be choosing the best available 23 players to hypothetically line up for Round 1, 2023 against the Tigers at the MCG – essentially, our best starting team on paper plus sub & 3 emergencies. We’ll go through each area of the ground: first the defenders; then the mids; then our forwards; our ruckman; and finally the makeup of our bench, sub & emergencies.

As always, we have to use a few assumptions as guides:

1. All players will be fit and eligible for the round one side, this includes Walsh and anyone else with current injury clouds ie Cuningham, Marchbank, Cottrell, Fogarty.
2. We will need a healthy balance of players in each part of the ground i.e. balance of talls/smalls to make a realistic starting side, hopefully there's a relief ruckman considered, etc.
3. There are no indiscretions among players or any other events leading to disqualification from selection.
4. Rookies [A + B] can be selected – any player on our current list of 43.
5. You should independently choose who you believe will be the best players in each respective position to help us win back-to-back Round 1 games against Richmond – and likely to continue to be a big part of our team for 2023 as we push for finals.

Here’s the results of the Consensus Teams so we can track our evolution:

Voting
1. We will vote for the 6 best backs (starters) and your rotation player for bench spot #1
2. We will then vote for 5 mids (3 starting on-ballers & 2 lining up on the wings) plus your rotation players for bench spots #2 & #3
3. We'll then have a vote for the ruckman.
4. We will vote for the 6 starting forwards and your rotation player for get bench spot #4
5. The 3 (non-sub) emergencies will be the 8th ranked player for each non-ruck position. We can either vote for the inaugural "Matty411 Super-Sub" independently first or take the highest rated emergency player for that award; I'll leave this to debate for now.
6. Players will be ruled out for following position/s once successful in a particular area of the ground of account of us not being able to have two of the same player.

I want Docherty on the wing or on the ball, I wonder whether if we did midfield first would he get that gig as well?
It's always the dilemma with this, the order of positional voting ultimately determines the outcome to a degree. I've got the ruck before the forwards with the thought that depending on who gets the #1 ruck spot it will impact who's voted in up forward. There is potentially players that people might want to 'save' for the forward group but if you don't get them into the team when you can then there's always a chance they could get votes in both positions yet still miss out.

I tend to think that we're voting a team based on positions in terms of a having a relatively 'balanced' selection, but it's ultimately about the 23 names at the end rather than the exact position they end up in. More or less it's top 6 are on field in their 3rd of the ground, 7th is bench, 8th is sub/emergency.

Also worth noting that as per the thread rules, we're assuming everyone is available which includes Mr Walsh, despite his round 1 availability being entirely fictitious.

I've gone with Young, Weiters, Gov, Doc, Saad and Williams. Kemp is my 7th as he has great versatility to chopout either a tall or a runner, or a forward.

Boyd i really like but can't squeeze in.

Marchbank i really like but i'm giving Gov first crack because he can turn games from back there. But don't falter Gov because Marchy, Newman and Kemp are breathing fire behind you.

Newman i have grown to respect. He has deficencies, but plays like a man and seemingly marshals well. I can't pick him when full strength but wouldn't be shocked if Vossy does.

Cowan is a big watch.

Selected

Boyd Weitering McGovern
Williams Young Saad

Newman as the 7th, due to his experience and essentially coaches the backline, also one of our better 1v1 backmen.

Good speed coming out of the back half

Prefer Doc up the field. Seems that Kemp will be developed as a forward, Marchbank stiff

Praise be our 'mainstays' who've been in the Consensus Best 22 every year - our reverse whipping boys, if you will:

Cripps, Plowman (ironic tbh), Weitering, Cripps, McKay, Charlie Curnow and Fisher - just SIX in total.

  • Docherty would've joined these ranks if not for his absence in 2019 a he battled ACL injuries.
  • Kennedy made it every year except - strangely - 2021 and was EMG in 2020
  • SPS made it every year until he left end of 2021
  • Despite mixed critics, McGovern made it every year since 2019 but faith ran out, being EMG in 2022 (again, ironically his best year)
  • Martin has been in the side each year since he joined, despite not living up to the expecations yet
  • Newman has been voted in our EMG the last three years (after making INT first year, 2019) but now played 55 games as a Blue
Lot of interesting data accruing here now, CJMB - thanks for keeping this alive.

Boyd Young McGovern
Docherty Weitering Saad

7th : Williams

Liking what i see in Boyd.
Quick, courageous with nice disposal and able to turn defence into attack.
Team first mindset … lockdown … whatever

McGovern has attributes that most don’t and could make him elite.
He’ll need the fitness and commitment to deliver this season and Carlton will be so much the better for it.

Saad is a star and Docherty is an elite defender.
The half back line ain’t broke so don’t mess with it.

Williams rotates and is again high quality when he presents himself at the required level.

This backline covers all bases and given continuity together, will be a real strength in the overall team through the season …

FB: Marchbank Young McGovern
HB: Williams Weitering Saad
7th: Newman

Weitering/Young pick themselves. Saad and Williams provide us with a heap of run and pace off the HB. Gov for me is a lock for his intercept marking and elite kicking out of the back half. Marchbank slightly over Newman in the best 18 as he can play tall or on a mid-sized type.

*Will have Docherty in the midfield group - think he can be an effective winger that can drop back if needed, but also give us a lot of drive going forward. Can also get some on ball minutes to help out with the rotations.

This will be our most likely back 6 but I would have Marchbank instead of McGov as he is a better 1v1 defender.
Docherty Young McGovern (Marchbank)
Williams Weitering Saad
Int: Newman

IMO - Our biggest weakness, we lack the lock down small defender, and this is were Plowman must play.
Ideally, we move one of Doc or Williams on a wing.

Doc is now a mid according to Weiters
What’s everyone’s thoughts?

Just ignore Doc in this one, people can change their votes, and we’ll put him up for selection in the mids?

Or re-do it? Either starting with the defenders again or jumping straight to the mids?

What do the people want?…

He’s currently our 6th highest voted player, but some people obviously didn’t vote for him here as they wanted him in the middle.

I’m open to suggestions.
