Bloody hope so.
Probably a 1/7 to 1/10 chance of ended up on a AFL list, training with an AFL squad throughout the season, access to better facilities and extra development sessions.

There will be multiple players who rate their chances at making the next level or want a 2nd chance who will jump at the opportunity.

I remember being on this forum a decade ago when we wanted to draft kids from Sandy Zebs.

Was it Beau Dowler that we all thought was getting drafted for 2-3 years in a row when he was playing there?

Wonder if SOS will just stack the Zebs with his former draftees as grab them. Look out if O'Brien and Plowman sign there in the next few weeks!

I don't really get this. If players wanted the chance of getting drafted, why wouldn't the enter the rookie draft?

Showing my ignorance here. Why join a VFL club if you want to play AFL? Is it just to put yourself in the shop window if you're too old to get a gig with the Dragons or other -18 clubs or the academies?

Yeah, you only play VFL if you want another chance at an AFL career. Really low paid compared to country footy with more commitment. Once you're 18 you are pretty much pushed out of the under 18 sides. Occasionally they carry a few over agers but they prefer to give spots to kids that will be drafted. You the have to find somewhere in the state leagues to get another go.

One of the big issues at Sandy is they arent gettnig a lot of quality recruits on their list. This would certainly make it more attractive for the VFL players.

I wonder if the arrangement includes the Mid Season Rookie Draft? That would mean the club would only have to commit to 6 months contracts.

If I was on the board I would put the screws on all the wealthy members to start rewarding players playing for the club.
Do what the Cats (get there wives jobs etc - Cotton on), Bombers etc do , offer family members work and and benefits that come with playing for the club.
This way you will attract players from all states knowing they can move house and everyone benefits , this is not only for players at the Saints but also at Sandringham.

The VFL should be the 2nd best competition in AFL , retired players should be playing in the VFL while they still have something left and this would bring the best out of the young talent that's at the club.

Players like Dunstan , Constable , Hickey and all these other guys who just retired who are just below AFL grade should be able to pull in a good wage while giving the VFL teams a core of players to form a solid team.

To me Sandringham should be playing before the seniors and if it was the 2nd best competition they would draw more people to games and put the guys in the 2s in better focus.

It's for anyone who misses out on getting drafted this year. Money is poor in the VFL but having a guaranteed rookie contract - plus the other incentives the club is offering - for someone is a great lure to chose Sandy over another VFL club or the SANFL to get seen by recruiters.

Caleb Poulter chose Footscray VFL last off season because the Dogs have a strong record of recruiting from their VFL team. He impressed, got picked up mid season, played then was rewarded for a 2 year contract. This new incentive should encourage players in a similar situation to play at Sandy.

VFL is so far away from that right now. An average non AFL aligned VFL player would get a few hundred dollars a week in season. Expected to train with the side twice and do their own fitness which costs money to keep up. Hardly any physio or health stuff is covered for them even if they have an injury. You can go play country footy and get a few grand per game and do no training and people will feed you, provide accomodation for free and if you want to move to the area they'll help find jobs and accomodation for you.

Could be slider given a lack of pace but I’ve got a feeling he’ll play round 1 wherever he goes
Stevens could be smart future planning for us in the post Crouch & Steele era.

Big bodied mids who can find the pill then use it well are a must have. As long as he's got the work ethic to work hard aerobically then any lack of pace can be covered.

Saw some highlights of Patrick Voss, Essendon DFA.
Not sure why he was cut or didn't get a game.
Turns 21y.o in June next year, 194cm-96kg.
Ferocious tackler, bordering on reportable? & good set shot on goal & has played back.
Won Essendon VFL B&F.
Saw a few dopers fans pretty disappointed at his delisting.

Unless they are short of equipment, you'd think that StKilda could offer their fitness facilities for use by their affiliated club.
Subject to conditions i guess.

I can see it happening that regular training at Sandy for 2nds but for those that can Saints will make their facilities open at Moorabbin during the week and maybe some regular times for fitness and recovery staff to help the willing player from Sandy.

End of the day the DFC was funded by public money we must be seen to put back to the community...Bringing Sandy along is an obvious way of doing so.

We are doing it with the girls....unlike Bulldogs and we are getting better players as a result and good crowds.

Now that we have some cash to splash would not take much to bring some community based services around DFC to further ingratiate us with the community rather than an extra part time coach.

Mandatory must if we want to grow the club and solidify our supporter base....we must be seen to be giving back to others.

The average player is getting 400k pa which is roughly 5 times what most supporters earn. Time players and clubs realised this and give back in other ways than just school clinics.

Without the eyeballs watching, the TV dollars will dry up, keep finding ways to engage the eyeballs otherwise the country football malaise and poor youth development will start happening in the metro area.

Rant over.

Saints on right track in so many differing ways....it is great to see.
