List Mgmt. 2023 Draft Thread - Part I

SOS has stated the club will select 3 players in the draft, makes sense given pick 4 is 92.
DMac will be given every opportunity to show he’s capable of getting back on the park, with Highmore now a requirement due to Coffield leaving.
That’ll leave a list spot opening for a delisted FA

When did he say that - I dont recall that in any of his interviews during trade week? It makes sense given where our picks lie, but I was hoping with pick trading and clubs passing later in the draft we may take one more.

No one would begrudge DMac being given the opportunity.

We’ll only have 3 picks in the draft so may not commit to any speculative picks…I’d just like to see the best available picked at each selection, then look for needs with delisted free agents and rookies
We traded out 3, delisted 4 (so far) traded in 2, and with our Irishman, I have it that we have 4 spots to fill.

It might be pick 92 nominally but with so many late picks being swallowed up by the academy players and with many clubs passing after the 3rd round, it will probably end up bring more like pick 60 and I rate Tocé as a man who can find gold in the late picks as he has in the past, so I really hope we're giving ourselves every chance of grabbing a 4th player in the draft, but I'd be satisfied if we grabbed the 4th player in the PSD I guess.

I keep forgetting Shaun Mannagh in my wish list/s. I think the club have a strong interest in him as will a heap of other clubs. He would be the perfect replacement for Gresham given he is a small forward/midfielder, which is a real list need. Im hoping we will pull the trigger on him at some stage. He hasn't been on a list before, so he has to nominate for the draft and you can bet that North will be be really keen given Barlow (his most recent VFL coach) has joined them as a Development Coach.

What do we think about trading our first pick into next year?
If we could get a second round pick for that it might be a very good move. The problem being there are very few up for grabs.
Would potentially be open to looking at it if we could get some assurances from an OOC Ben King next year. Would love to see us play him in the goal square and push Max further up the ground

I suppose that's another angle. My thoughts were that it's a crapshoot around our range anyway, and our #21 or more like #26 is still technically a 1stRDP which keeps us on the right side of the ledger. The more l think about it the better it seems.

It may have been Missen but I definitely heard it from a club spokesman

Nas will make a great wingman, i don't know why we brought another one in.

Small/slightly built midfielders tend to need to at least start as a forward at AFL level.
Sinclair got his physique good enough to play anywhere.
Jack Lonie played like a mid, but he was never physical enough to play as one at that level.
Isn’t Henry a bit more of that dmac type wingman? Bit more keep it moving and add some physical pressure rather than nas/hill genuine bullet pass sharp shooters

Park the Ben King talk until he’s a free agent
Needs and wants are a different thing. If they're smart Bing will always be a want irrespective of any need.
He will probably never be an UFA in a relevant time frame so it will almost certainly need to be a trade scenario.

My gut feel is that the arrival of Jed Walter will set the timer for Bing's departure from the Suns in 2-3 years.
If he serves his term faithfully they will let him go for fair compensation which will still be high but affordable.

If the Suns are flying by that stage he may just want to stay.
2026:

Sharman

Moose
Marshall
Keeler ???

Battle
Hammer
Van Ess

Do we really want/need Ben King? Would prefer to throw money at an A grade mid or two.

Agreed but if he wants to come to us we would be negligent in not getting it done. Depending on where Bing sees himself playing we could turn Caminiti and/or Hayes into key defenders. A forward line of the two Kings, Max at FF, Ben at CHF and Keeler FP (if he makes it) would give us some real fire power. In his most recent contract with GCS he received $750k per year so thats a lot of cap in two key forwards, but if we can build around them and win a flag them we would all be wrapt. Say Max is on the same thats $1.5M per year of $13,540,000 which is 11% of the TPP.

Richmond had Lynch & Reiwoldt and Geelong had Hawkins and Cameron so its not like two key forwards dont help win flags.

Personally I think clubs like Collingwood etc will throw big $$$ at him, making it hard to knock back. We might not have that concern, but it would be a nice problem to have!
