I have no idea who the club should go for with the first pick
It’s out of our hands to a degree, depends who’s left over from the previous 15 picks…we’re linked to Tholstrup, Murphy, Edwards & Collard it seems!
Riles Macca on you tube has us getting Tholstrup, Collard & Harvey Johnson.

Thinking now that Edwards with the 1st, demattia/hardeman with the 2nd and Simpson with the 3rd or trading up if we have too.. gives us dematia/hardeman at hbf with speed and good foot skills to go with nas, sincs then goes to full time mid and then we have speed at clearances with dow, Edwards, Simpson, that we lacked and then get mannaugh in the psd for that extra small forward we need

If our preferred target at 13 (or whatever it ends up being) is gone, and depending on how Toce etc... see the next 10 or so picks, do we try and trade 13 & 40 to North for 17 and 18? Probably not an ideal trade for North, but yeah...Gives us 17, 18 & 21

Its been reported that James Stewart 29/30yo will train in the pre-season with the club looking to get an SSP position. He might be ok as a backup but given his age surely we would do better at looking at some younger options eg Ethan Phillips 24yo, Emerson Jeka 22yo or Patrick Voss 20yo. Its not like Stewart has ever secured a key position role at any point in his career, so hopefully the club has a serious look at someone younger with the capacity for improvement at least.

These older backup players have seldom worked for the club, for me its a wasted opportunity to give a younger player a chance to develop.

I suppose the difference is that Stewart has shown that he can play at AFL level to a decent standard. As a break glass in emergency type who can support the development of Van Es at Sandy, he's a reasonable option to consider for an SSP rookie spot.

18 clubs have passed over Phillips multiple times, Jeka is more of a forward and Voss is too small to be considered as a KPD back up spot.

I wouldn't mind seeing Jeka given a chance to train over the summer as back up to Max & Hammer but the other two are long shots IMO.

Archie Roberts was very impressive on SEN this morning.

If we're looking at adding another dynamic, damaging HB then he has to be in the conversation... not sure he gets to our 3rd pick unfortunately.

Plenty of very good players have been over looked at drafts - Wilkie, Stewart, Kelly, Collins, Daniels but given the chance have proven recruiters very wrong. Has Jeka been tried in defence and the fact that he has been signed to play VFL for Essendon next year says a bit about how they rate him over Stewart. Stewart himself was more of a tall forward/2nd ruckman. Voss is a powerfully built 194cms kid. Steven May is 193cms and is a multiple all Australian. I think its the same old St Kilda retracing the same mistakes.

Well if it is the same old mistakes, all 18 clubs are making it.
I would give the club the benefit of the doubt when it comes to train on.

Wood, Stocker, Hammer, Campbell ( best clubman) etc have all contributed to the club well.
So I don't see the mistakes there recently.

If Wilson or Windsor aren’t there at 13.

Then I hope we do that north trade

Agreed but how many of those were 30yo. Campbell might be a great clubman but he is never going to be a consistent AFL player.

I've yet to see a phantom where they are there for our pick.
Don't know why North would do that trade, if there is a player significantly better at our pick than at theirs, we should take them.

Every mock has Tholstrup at our pick.

The most recent news is that Melbourne met him a few days ago and flew out to see him.

So I’m not concerned about what a mock has until it’s Twomey saying it.

North has also been asking the question about acquiring another top 13 pick.

Guys like Campbell & Stewart are pure back ups.

They're not recruited to become consistent AFL players... they're brought in to fill a role if needed.

You can argue that it's taking a spot of a kid who might make it but clubs seem to disagree... they want the mature bodies who can cover injuries of senior players if needed.

All clubs do it from time to time.

Just wondering who our current rookie-listed players are.
After Stocker & Wood were elevated to the main list.

McLennan & O'Connor- Cat B

Caminiti-rookie-yes

Heath & Sharman, what list are they on?

None of those others have any proven capability. Thats the point of a backup.

If North have a good reason to want our pick ( after all their others ), why would we not have a good reason to want that pick?

Yes Melbourne met Tholstrup. That doesn't mean that they will choose him, it probably means that they are interviewing everyone in a range of players. I suspect they've already interviewed Leake, Windsor, and Wilson , all of which will probably there at Melbourne's pick but all a possibility to go sooner.

I've seen a single BF member tip Tholstrup to go to Melbourne ( before the reports of the visit ), and House of Footy has him going to Sydney.
