Thought the exact same thing.

Personally I think there's weaknesses in people's game you can address but I don't see how you develop demattia.

Fitness is one thing. Body strength another.

But if he's not getting enough of the ball and he's disposal is terrible. I don't see how you can fix that.
This reminds me of the months we spent drinking in Petracca's bathwater only to rumours to filter through a day out that we were going to go for McCartin. Hopefully we avoud a different fate this time round.

hope Im terribly wrong, but if we're planning on taking wilson I hope we trade it for a future first instead. I just don't see any elite qualities other than running ability...

a few nice kicks but mostly pretty average, average decision making, lots of touches running out of the back line by himself, looks sloppy and not particularly hard at it.

Just posting this for future I told you so's... either at me or from me

rip 2023 draft

Running ability and nice skills are exactly what we need in our midfield though. See how those attributes hammered us in the GWS final when they cut us up.

My opinion is to not pass up Wilson.
Followed by Edwards.

Failing that, trade back with NM for 2x late teens picks and grab any of DeMattia, and/or Hardeman, and/or best available tall back or ruck.

I see the hysteria has descended on draft time. Writing off a player who is 18 y.o and has years of development is plain ridiculous.
Who ever we take, let's not melt until all our selections are done.
Remember the melts when we selected Long at 26 and Battle at 39. In hindsight Shai Bolton was better than Long but on the night if it was reversed ( Battle @26 and Long 39 nobody would have batted an eyelid).
So if we for example picked DeMattia pick 13 then say Edwards at 21, would anyone complain?
And whoever we take, give them a chance FFS. If it's not your guy, suck it up and trust the recruiting guys.

Long is not a great example.
Horrible draft choice, despite us somehow getting back some trade value.

If they struggle to find the ball (like Sinclair and Nas did) you put them at half back. It’s the oldest trick in the book.

Why didn't they put Murdoch back?

Has us taking Charlie Edwards and Ollie Murphy (read in reader mode on your phone. Website has the equivalent of herpies with the amount of ad space they are selling)

That website is terrible.

I’ll pass on Shoenmakers.

Seems to read the ball poorly in flight in that vision, often getting there late and spoiling for 3-4 deep. If you’re going to play a 3rd tall role, you need to be able intercept.

Kicking is so so, and seems very much a receiver. I’d be pretty confident in saying he won’t translate to the AFL

He's not a third tall, he's more like Gilbert or Roberton- a tall rebound defender.

Austin was kind of like that too.
All those players were shoved into key defender spots at times, because we needed on and they were tall. ( Gilbert the only one who was OK ish at it ).
Sam was also pretty good at winning contested ball, and ran through the middle a bit in the end.

Where is the hysteria? Only seen people discussing who they prefer. Don't remember too much hysteria back then either other than people thought we were crazy to go for an unknown in Long over the slider in Bolton which was correct in hindsight too.

We are in the gamble part of the draft and any of the players we look at will be a bit of a dice roll. Probably think Edwards and Simpson look the most likely to be available with the highest upside and lowest downside so prefer them and then probably Wilson but don't really care that much. There isn't a bunch of guaranteed stars sitting in our range. Just hope that we get who ever we take right.

Nice having grown ups running the show though. It's the first draft in years that I haven't had a sense of dread going into it. I'm starting to trust them again.

Both of those guys were read the flight of the ball to a high level.

They weren't interceptors though. Shoenmaker is a Daniel Rich like kick of the ball and that's his strength but he's an adequate mark and that day of the video was supposed to be windy which made his kicking look off and it probably also made his marking look awkward. Don't know that much about him but haven't seen anything suggesting that marking was an issue.

I really, really like Cooper Simpsons highlights.

[emoji736] Disposal by foot
[emoji736] Stoppage work
[emoji736] Acceleration (which is power)
[emoji736] Kicks goals

He looks like he has a more contested bent than say DiMattia and Charlie Edwards, although Charlie probably better aerially.

Me too. I reckon he could be a real star.

I just feel this is going to be a bloke we look back on in 10 years time and think how did so many clubs overlook him.

He needs a couple of preseasons to get his tank up to an acceptable standard, but he does the hard parts of the game very very well.

The only thing I'd say is that he's probably not that much of Lyon player. He's a true old school inside mid. Lyon likes guys that can spread and run over guys who are pure accumulators out of the centre. I reckon he'll be a gun but can see why he's not been mentioned in our sights. Looks like an Ollie Wines type of mid with better kicking. Could be a Brownlow type even with his high production and good skills.

Boom or bust if DeMattia is the pick.

Wilson probably gets you 150 games. But if he turns out to be Farren Ray Mk2 he doesn’t move the needle.

I get the desire here to go for it. I’m just not sure it’s the right choice?

I feel like we could trade back in or trade down and still land him + grab someone else

Edwards then. He's a much lower chance of busting.
