Did nobody see what GWS did to our midfield in the final?

Yes we all saw, however what we saw has absolutely no ability to alter who will be available at our pick selections.

Unless there are some surprising slides I doubt our picks this year will deliver the mid of the quality we crave.

Just blindly taking a player, or players, because his is a mid if there are other positional players who are genuinely better players will do us more harm than good.

We all want gun mids, but I personally hope our recruiters draft the best talent with at least our first two picks. After that it is more of a lottery anyway.

Talk he was going to land at 6-8

Going to the Hawks at 4 whilst a small increase changes how this draft now plays out.

It removes west coast from buying back in for Curtain and poses questions on what Geelong does
I don't think there has ever been any danger of WC placing worse than p3 for that reason, but really they need p2. Norff need a KPD more than anything.

Jack Sinclair did the opposite to what we are talking about. He was drafted as a mid and became an elite half back.

Mitch Owens isn't a ful time mid just yet (although I'm confident he can) and Jack Steele dominated the NEAFL playing midfield as an 18 year old.

Yeo and DeGoey are some good examples though. It can happen but it's very rare.

We didn't develop them. Flip side is Allison got too long. Lewie Pierce same. Leo got a fair shake, so did Bytel.

We have an experienced astute group of coaches and development staff now. We should be more ruthless.

That's footy department spend. Having someone that can sort through the list and work out who is worth persisting with and who not to put time into is essential. Part of Geelong's success has been the ability to call them early. Often selling their ordinary players before too much time has gone in but still having potential to get something back. We tend to hold too long. In hindsight selling guys like Clark before last year probably would have been smart but because we had FA success we had to hold players because that's all we had to sell to fans.

If you are playing regular finals and have momentum fans are usually a lot more trusting of in-house decision makers.

Higgins is the most almost player in the league at the moment, he just struggles to take it up to a consistent level. His best is incredible but his worst is absolute passenger. He really needs to be a high goal scorer because his speed on the chase is below average and he doesn't really impact a lot in any other way. Butler has his pressure game so even when he's quiet he's quite valuable.
Very difficult to be a consistent high performer playing as a permanent small forward.
As good as Milne was, he had many poor games throughout his career, particularly in finals!
Higgins return of 35 goals this season needs to be the minimum benchmark.

Higgo and King are very similar in that regard. Both confidence players. Would like to see King played at CHF.

Should get him to watch old tapes of G Train and own the goal square. Get him some roids and turn those loose shoulders in boulders. G would do absolute bare minimum running and used timing and intimidation to find his little bits of space. Max started playing angry this year. He needs some meat on him to make himself scary.

Didn't he take a mark during the practice game at the start of 2023? A good mark.
I was a DMac critic of the highest order but he turned me around.
Sad part is, just when his game clicked, injury got in the way big time!
If there’s any justice, his calf troubles are over.
He and Jones, IF fit, could really be influential.

Sharman at FF 😊

He's one of the few talls with some run so I'd keep him out of the 50 and drift in with the play. He's best jumping on shoulders with a run up. If he parks he tends to not get into the game as much.

100 percent but Higgo needs to find ways to influence when it's not his night. Milne usually had his bad games because someone was sitting on him and not letting him get into the play. He at least was good enough to draw a player. Higgins is having a bad night and goes completely missing. You play a man down while he seems to sulk. He doesn't look urgent when things aren't going our way. Looks bored and annoyed that no-one is feeding him. Perhaps it's just perception but he seems to like to do the finishing from others hard work and if they don't feed him he's not really a factor.

I too am a Butler fan. Personally I have not understood all the flak sent his way.

He had a couple of ordinary seasons after 2020. He looks a bit lazy at times. His pressure game is better under Lyon and his consistency is up. I don't think he's massively talented so has to make himself work hard consistently to make himself valuable. This year he did that. That's all you can ask, I'd still like someone with a bit more X factor inside 50. A Charlie Cameron types of player that sides have to plan for. Butler is the least of our issues though.

There was talk that if Curtain made it past the dogs pick.

West coast would shop their future first for a pick to grab Curtain.

So potentially pick 1 for pick 6 or 7.

Hawthorn taking him at 4 changes that outcome.

Also gives the other key backs about more value. So O’Sullivan probably goes slightly earlier.

Does it bring Murphy back into the first round?

Which of them are top notch and consistent permanent mids? Probably Yeoh and Bolton (Degoey is more of a forward/Mid).. Steele was already a full time mid when drafted by GWS.
