Yeah I think the whole waiting on key forwards things is a little bit of a myth. They show talent early enough to spot. They might not be at their best early but if they're s**t for the first couple years it's normally cause they're s**t. I know Jefferson is probably 5th banana and very skinny but you'd like him to show more.
I’ve seen some good signs with Jefferson. Very sticky fingers and judges the ball well in the air. He looks a very sound set shot kick. But I haven’t seen much beyond that aside from he seems to get into dangerous spots for easy over the top goals.

But as others have pointed out he’s hampered by three of four of JVR, Schache, Brown, McDonald, J.Smith and Melksham hanging about in the VFL. There was one game he was coming all the way into defensive 50 to get involved.

He goes for long periods without being sighted but there’s only so many opportunities in a game and there is so much other forward competition.

His body isn’t as far off as I thought it might be, but his target or be a semi-regular would be 2025.

Melksham will retire at the end of this year. Hopefully one or both of Tmac and Brown pull the pin and you can rely on Smith to be injured quite a bit. If Jefferson is second or third target for Casey in 2024 and stinks it up week after week I’d be concerned.

I would usually agree with you here, the good ones show signs even when raw, but we drafted a guy who is particularly skinny and hard to get a read on.

Wondering whether we can flip the script on the KPFs a bit and look at getting a decent KPD in. Whether they allow Petty to play forward, or play next to him down back when May retires, I feel like there's more of them out there than KPFs. We also don't really have the cap space for a big name, I guess.

Andrew is a good shout. I have seen bits and pieces from him; he's definitely weak but he's also played some promising footy. With what they're tryuing to do culturally, I wouldn't be surprised if they let him go provided the offer was ok.

Joel Hamling seems like another decent option - very much a cheap right now option at 30 but is just a victim of Freo's crazy KPD depth.

Assuming McKay and Himmelberg would demand too much, but jeez that'd be nice.

Joel Hamling is still on a list? Wow

He's only 30. Not sure why he's hung round at Freo, although I imagine he signed a big contract a few years ago before Cox and Ryan broke out.

Honestly Ben McKay at North is probably worth a look. Would help shore up the back six for the next few years and we can play Petty forward permanently.

Other clubs are apparently offering him well above market value. The KPP scarcity is pretty much league wide aside from the Crows.

Ben McKay would be a great get for us. But more sure if he was going to leave we’d have the $. He’ll make bank on this next deal. Unless we can get him to come over with the motivation to play for less for potential success. But clubs seem to work contracts in no matter what. Would solve some issues for us though.

We were 0 chance of getting him anyway so not surprises

This shouldn't put us off and we should still ask North the question, try and tempt them with a package of TMac, Ben Brown, Harmes and James Jordon. Two KPFs are better than one and two mids in their prime would be hard to say no to.

Careful, we might have to include one of those guys in the Butters deal.
