And it took me 30 seconds to find out he's given up on AFL.

I'll wait for the next options given there's so many. Who else you got? You guaranteed this remember.

I'm just picking out goal kickers off a google search.

Liam McBean lead the SANFL the past 3 years in goal kicking.

It's ****ing easy to find someone better than 2023 TMac, stop acting like it's rare as hens teeth ffs. Lol. I'm sure there are many younger developing types who haven't lead state comps in goal kicking too. I honestly can't be ****ed looking for a back up KPF, it's boring and im not paid to do it.

I’m not really aware of who looms large at our early picks but would be surprised if we’re looking at talls (particularly forwards) in the draft. We recruited JVR in 21 and Jefferson in 22 with our first selections, don’t see us doing the same in 23.

Yeah unless we're giving up on a flag over the next few years we desperately need to add more to our midfield.

Lol so easy that the best recruiter in the league and one of the best list managers hasn't been able to 'pick out goal kickers off a google search....'

Come on man.

McBean sounds alright, albeit a bit old, on paper, but has to be a reason he hasn't been looked at again since being delisted 7 years ago?

At this rate we should have 3 or so picks in the top 25.

I reckon trade up for sure, keep one and go best available & try to trade one of them and potentially a future for a decent Key Forward like a Ben King.

I only suggested we keep him because I assume he’s contracted and it’d be unprecedented to pay out 3 players still contracted in the same season.

Yep, and that's why I said we should approach him and see if he wants to retire, with the carrot of being offered a job in coaching, development or anywhere else in the club that takes his fancy.

Bloke like him who has already been moved on twice would have more than one eye on their future career at this point and you'd assume would be aware that he's very unlikely to be playing more AFL games in 2024.

You might be able to get Gold coast to trade their first pick for our first and second. They need the points and it hopefully gives us 2 top ten picks. Plus Freos second still in play.

Highly doubt Brown walks away without taking his final years salary with him, would rather have him fill a list spot if we have to pay the ~$600k anyway.

I disagree - if we have an honest conversation with him about his prospects of being a regular or semi-regular player next year I think he's definitely not the type to just say get stuffed, I'm contracted so I'll sit around and take the cash.

Seems to have a lot of interests outside football, he's also been involved in helping out our AFLW team.

I just don't see why we would need to blow smoke up that group of players by telling them they've got an important role to play next year. Be honest with them that if they stay around they will only be considered in an emergency and even then only if they're fully fit and kicking lots of goals in the VFL.

Liam McBean lmfao

Maybe it is just me, but I would have assumed the vast majority of people would quite happily take $600k to play a year of footy at Casey. I mean, he has a family, what is one more year of work even if it isn't at the highest level. Maybe he walks away for $400-$500 as a handshake but why?

I don't know where the $600k figure is from, would be pretty shocking list management if his deal wasn't front-ended considering he was injury prone and approaching veteran status before we even got him.

But it's not that unusual for players to retire before their contract is up. He's been carrying knee injuries for his last 5-6 years in the league and people do have professional pride. Not many full forwards who were runner up in the Coleman multiple times want to finish their career playing 18 months in the VFL and kicking a goal a game.

The worst part about the possibility of having Brown and TMac on our list next year is the lack of opportunity Jefferson will get at Casey. Both will be spending all year down there. Surely we have to force one of them into retirement? Brown did sign a 4year deal with us though. I have no doubt that was a sticking point to come across. We'd have to pay him out which hurts the salary cap I guess. Not sure how that all works. Our F50 is a bit of a mess really.

Right. And how is that unclear? You've never heard of a retiring AFL player being given an entry level coaching job before?
Sure, let's give it to a VFL scrubber to be an assistant coach of an already dysfunctional forward line.

God dam man, Seriously read what you just wrote and explain why in clear terms why on earth we'd delist Schache at the end of the year even though he's contracted for another year, then offer him an assistant coaching role to look after the forwards...

Does that not look one bit stupid to you?

Referring to the player you desperately want to keep on our playing list as a "VFL scrubber" is not the strongest argument I've heard.

And where did I say look after the forwards? Where did I say delist?

At least engage with the actual argument I'm making instead of one you've made up.

By your logic, we have to keep Schache as an AFL listed player because he's too terrible a player to make a coach. I've been saying for years Schache's a woeful player, but he's still played about 100 more AFL games than the guy who is on our payroll as senior coach of Casey. You don't have to be an All-Australian to be a development coach.

To spell it out:

1) Schache is a non-AFL standard player who is unfortunately contracted for next year.

2) If Schache agrees to retire we can fill his list spot with someone who may actually be better than a VFL scrubber, which is generally considered a good thing when putting together an AFL list to try and win a premiership.

3) If offering Schache an entry level job somewhere in the system is an incentive for him to retire when he otherwise wouldn't, we should explore that option. Because we know he's a VFL scrubber who shouldn't be on our list. If he's happy to retire just because he knows he'll never get a game again and wants to start a new career outside footy, even better.

4) There's huge pressure on the AFL to reverse the football department spending cuts they implemented during covid because so many coaches are struggling with the workload, so there's every chance there will be development coach jobs going at the end of the year - which before they had to be reduced were the ones that were routinely given to retiring players.

Archer Reid is a tall forward/ruck. 203cms, agile, smart, and kicks well.

With both TMc and BBB at the end of careers, and Max Gawn 31 Yrs old, and Brodie Grundy heading towards 30Yrs of age. I think we definitely need more than one pair of tall players at Casey, developing... or not.?

van Rooyen is going OK, atmo in Red n Blue.
Jefferson might be nothing.?

Then we have our tall defenders.
Maysie is going on 32Yrs.

It works OK, IF we bring in kids from the draft.

I don't think we have enough talls to be able to choose from 2 years from now. We need kids now to bolster us for when May and Gawn are done.

This shit is way too funny.

Thanks for the comedy Gold.

If they're @ Casey, then Tmac plays in defense and Brown CHF or ruck him that way Jefferson plays FF.
