We wanted Holmes and Bowey from memory. We had 2 picks next to each other so we picked Laurie instead of Holmes essentially - who hasn't set the world on fire and doesn't have the dash or midfield game of Holmes.

Holmes is a gun. Exactly what we need.

Not sure what we could have offered to move up to get him, but this is why Cats continue to never bottom out. They continue to just make solid decisions to improve their list. If we had so much of a hard on for him, we should have found a way to move up the draft like Geelong did. Could have been the difference between another flag or not.

He was a bolter that we had our eyes on and Cats traded for the pick before ours with Richmond (?) and swooped on him. I think we were very surprised when it happened.

There's a youtube of the behind the scenes of the draft day that shows all of the discussions around it. Not much more we could have done. Maybe done more homework on who else could have swooped on him but that's kinda difficult. Good call by Cats though.

If we really wanted him, we would have found a way..well done Cats. They got a ripper! I still think Riv can be that player for us.

The problematic part was the Cats finding out that we wanted him
I can’t recall the source, but I think Taylor said he definitely had interest in Holmes but it was at the Fraser Rosman pick 34, not the Bowey and Laurie 21 and 22 spots.

Geelong had pick 33 prior to 34 as well.

Geelong heard Melbourne wanted Holmes and traded with Richmond during the draft to get ahead of Melbourne at pick 20.

Geelong wouldn’t have known it was 34 where Melbourne thought they would get Holmes. But they wouldn’t have wanted to risk that it was pick 21 or 22. If one of Laurie or Bowey was gone by the time pick 22 came then Melbourne probably would’ve gone for Holmes if he was still available.

Taylor saying it was the 34 pick for Holmes also could’ve been just something said to make it easier to swallow getting guzumped by Geelong’s trade.

Holmes was still a draft bolter either way and well played Geelong.

As an aside Richmond drafted Tom Brown in 2021 with the pick they got from Geelong for the 2020 pick 20. A son of a former Geelong player who is yet to debut.

They literally traded up to get in front of us on draft day. Not sure how we anticipate that.

I remember Twomey having us taking him at 19/20 or whatever we had. I think the pick 34 stuff might have been saving face for the content for the members.

Could’ve been, but knowing how Twomey works as a friend was in that area years ago they just hear things from around the traps and use educated guess work for their expected picks for players of interest.

They tend to get the club to player interest correct, but the actual pick range they wouldn’t have a clue about.

Twomey wouldn’t know if it was 21, 22 or 34 Melbourne had him at. In 2021 I think Twomey had Melbourne going for Howes at 19 (was JVR) and instead Melbourne got Howes at 39.

But I don’t see it as a knock on Melbourne’s recruiting team to get trumped like that. They had no way to know Geelong would do a live trade.

They shouldn’t have known either way really.

Watching the first quarter of the Vic Country vs Vic Metro game and Kynan Brown has had an impressive start for Vic Metro.

Has had a dozen or so touches and been good inside and out and relatively poised with the ball.

Currently playing as a on baller.
I’ve not seen much of Kynan Brown but what I have seen he looks hard at it, but his disposal looks pretty scrappy.

I’d be interested to know if looking poised means hitting more targets.

Runs like Cliff Young

anyone that follows the draft, is Harley Reid still worth trading 3x first rounders or has the gap been closed like some others suggest?

The video shows Taylor talking about being "happy to take those two" before the trade was announced and referencing "the one you like" (to Goody) as a 180cm forward. It could have been a face saving edit though as he does look a bit deflated finding out it was Geelong that had traded up.

Missed that majority of the U18 game today but did see the third quarter, so I have very big wraps on Duursma now. I believe he hasn't had the best year so far, but that sort of match turning ability is rare.

No way absolutely no way.

With many of our best players over 29Yrs, Salem 28, and Petracca already going on 28Yrs. We should be getting to the draft with our picks intact.

Swings and roundabouts re missing out on Holmes. Maybe if we got him we finish a little higher this year and miss out on a different gun youngster.

Zane Duursma sounds like a cracking talent from below report. 23 touches, 10 marks, 4 goals against Vic Metro. Pacy, 190cm. Type of kid who could bolt up into top five pick contention.

Duursma dominant, likely top 10 picks fire in U18s finale

Take a look at our current list of players who are 25 or under, and what age they'll be in three years. There's probably 13 quality players there, from what we've seen so far.

Fritsch, Lever and Salem will be 29/30 in three years and could still be damaging.

Petracca will be 30 and probably spending most of his time forward.

The biggest hole on the list would seem to be the midfield. Oliver is the only gun in there.

JT's choice is that we use our picks, in a deep draft, to round out the list with the likes of Watson, McKelcher or Duursma... or go all in on Reid... who is 'once in a generation' talent.

I'm happy with whatever JT decides, but it would be really exciting to get Reid over the line. In the middle with Oliver & Petracca, he would really be a game changer for us straight away.

And we'd still have a pretty good on-ball unit in three years time too.

If the draft is as deep as they say, I wouldn't mind seeing us downgrade picks. If we do get a top 5 pick, turning it into two mid firsts and getting some young mids in wouldn't be a bad thing. Unless Duursma is available, of course, kid looks well suited.

Majority of names here in red will be gone within 3 years. It's a really thin list of quality

Zane has been considered for top 5 since before the season.

He trained with us over the offseason and I reckon the club would have a close eye on him.
I like how the parents have gone with X, Y and Z for their kids names first names. I guess they would have had to go with Andy if they had another one...

Duursma sounds like exactly what we need, someone who can rotate midfield/forward duties with Trac.
