I'll be disappointed if we draft Sanders but I'll back in Jason Taylor

Less chance of him being a dudd than Mr “Never played on a decent FF” O’Sullivan.

Jed Walter in the game against O Sullivan

Jed Walter took only 25 minutes to stamp himself as a potential top-three pick at this year's national draft with a brilliant performance for the Allies in their 16-point win over South Australia on Sunday.

In the first game of this year's Under-18 Championships, it was Gold Coast's Academy forward who stole the show with a commanding effort in the Allies' strong 12.12 (84) to 11.2 (68) win at Thebarton Oval.

Walter, who is tied to the Suns at this year's draft, finished with 3.5 in attack as well as 17 disposals and nine marks.

Yeah, I didnt see that game but just going off what I saw when reviewing O'Sullivan's tape this is exactly the concern I had, really needs to develop the defensive side of his game a fair bit. good at coming off his man and intercepting, not so good at stopping his opponent, poor in one on ones

The good news is that side of his game can easily be taught and developed. But I cant see him getting a game this year or anything unless we are crushed by injuries. Hes more a pick for the future who needs to time at Casey.

I’m guessing crows want Petty tied up in the McAdam deal. Dees no doubt will be asking massive overs for Petty. Reckon this gets done for a F2 eventually.
IF they want Petty this trade period, then they can cough up P10, P14 & McAdam; Plus a swap of P24 for Dees P42, plus a future Dees 2nd Rnd Pick to the crows.

He can play, and mark, at either end of the ground. Could be anything, or nothing. Most likely something.

Once trade period is done, I'll get a poll up for draft preferences. We're all on board with the obvious choices in Reid, Duursma, McKercher and Curtin; however, none of us seem completely sold on the O'Sullivan/Sanders/Caddy/Watson group. Will be interesting to see what the general consensus is if we head to the draft with 6 & 11 (bearing in mind there could still be later trades).

Think this might be our most uninspiring off season for a long time. Considering our draft capital and cap space at our disposal.

I thought last year Grundy and Hunter was bad but this year takes the cake with the big name recruits to get us over the line for the flag being Fullarton and McAdam.

Can’t really see where our improvement is going to come from.
You don't see any of JVR, Riv, Koz, McVee, Petty, Bowey, Woey, Laurie, Chandler, Howes etc improving? These guys and hopefully a different voice in the midfield (McQualter) with a few different ideas will see improvement.

It is a little worrying that we're going in with the same forwardline as the last 2 years(which didn't work) and we have Petty with a Busted foot and Melk a year older coming off an acl midseason. McAdam is an unknown really. Injured a lot but could replace Melk. Not overly inspiring. Fullarton for Grundy is a big come down as well(obviously frees up some $$, but who are we using the extra $$ on). I think the only comfort right now is if Curtin or Duursma slides to our pick.

Odds on to get Sanders and Caddy then 😛

While I don't love either of them, as a pairing they wouldn't be the worst outcome as you have one safe pick (Sanders) and one higher risk/reward type (Caddy).

Would rather we take at least one player with good footskills/pace though. And I imagine both will be off the board before our second pick, anyway.

Likely looking at one of O'Sullivan/Sanders/Caddy (Curtin if we're very lucky) with 6*, then one of Wilson/Windsor/Leake/Murphy with 11*.

I'll be genuinely shocked if Curtin is available. If Dogs are hellbent on Watson, then one of the guns will be on the board. Question is, if Watson isn't taken by the Dogs, do we pick him at 6?

So we have a dual AA ruckman and 3 premiership players going out, with 1 bloke who can’t stay on the park (McAdam) and one bloke who can’t get a run (Fullerton) to bolster our stocks.

Anyone else worried we are going backwards? Not really inspired by this trade period when we should be making moves in our window.

We will go backwards at this rate while Sydney (Grundy/Adams/Hamling/Jordan), St Kilda (Henry/Dow), Essendon (McKay/Gresham/Goldstein/Duursma) and Bulldogs (Coffield/Harmes/Watson/Croft) look to pass us and Collingwood make that gulf bigger with Schultz. Even Port with Ratugolea/BZT and Jordan Sweet will be stronger.

Absolute piss take on our end with an obvious very limited prep or priming of targets done.

The real tell tail is how we rang Hawkins last week instead of 6-8 weeks ago when contract issues were starting.

lol you just got royally wrecked and this is your come back? Embarrassing. Anyway back on topic

Wouldn’t mind us taking a look at Ash Johnson if we lose Petty. Struggles to get a run at the Pies and at 193cm would provide us some good aerial capacity.
He's also Shane McAdam's brother, interestingly enough. I'd be keen with or without Petty, he is a much better option than the two fossils.

Do you really think we are going to miss Grundy, Harmes or Jordon? Even Hibbo barely played this year and our backline has evolved enough that he isn't that great a loss anyway.

I don't really see the point in listing their accolades like premierships and AAs when they were all fringe players this year.

If we go backwards next year it won't be because we lost those guys.

If Gawn goes down it will be. It will also be because of how uninspiring our off season is shaping up to be with **** all ready made talent coming in.

If Gawn goes down it will be.
Grundy didn't make much difference when Gawn went down this year.

Happy not to have a $650k backup. If Gawn goes down its incumbent on the coaches to change things up so we become less reliant on having a dominant ruckman.

While it’s unlikely I’m all in on Harley Reid. You need stars of the comp to win flags. 2021 we had 5 All Australian players that led to us winning a flag.

We also only had 6 players drafted in the top 20 that we drafted ourselves.
Petracca, Oliver, Brayshaw, Salem, Pickett and Jackson.
Everyone else was either a late pick or we traded for them.

Petracca and Oliver were stars for us, we were lucky to have high picks go get them, and that’s what you’re expecting Reid to be. Pick 6, 11 and F1 will most likely be players similar to Brayshaw or Salem’s level. Quality players but we can get those types in future drafts when we don’t have a chance at the next star of the comp. Plenty of future 2nd and 3rd rounders to fill out the role players. Reid is unlikely but if you can get him go for it.

Then I’ll be all in for JUH next year. Trying to save a bit of money in the salary cap is overrated. Getting the best players in the comp on your list is far more important. JUH projects to be one of the best key forwards for the next decade. Just like when we went and got Lever before he hit his prime we go out and get a key forward that you know is going to be good. Also unlikely but if a chance I’d pay up to get him.

If we got Reid and JUH and they turn out to have All Australian level careers we be in a very good position to put a contending team on the park for the next decade.

We're not getting JUH. End of story. Have we ever poached a key forward from another Vic club? Maybe in the late 70s, early 80s. Better off targeting an Allen, Fogarty or King.

See this is actually shithouse research by you and just simply making it up as you go. You're throwing darts just for the sake of it

Both Walter and O'Sullivan played for the Allies as teammates in this game and throughout the championships.

Chris Dawes.

JUH is unlikely, like all those other players are, but a big offer will force the Dogs to put a big offer forward and they would question paying another key forward a big contract after Naughton when they also have other options. Unlikely but have a crack.

I stand corrected. Welcome JUH
