ANB re-signed for 3 years? That's a very odd decision IMO. What's the need to lock ANB in until 2026?

At least its not as bad as Gus 's contract. There, I said something positive.

It's hardly beyond the realms of possibility that come the start of 2024 ANB will no longer be first 22.
That's just really odd circumstances to sign him until the end of 2026. It's not like if we give him a 1 or 2 year extension Geelong were going to swoop in and offer him 4.

It's hardly beyond the realms of possibility that his contract remuneration reflects that...

There was a pull back to SA for him so this puts that to bed and gives the list management team certainty around what else they can do. I don't find it "odd" at all when you realize his contract amount would be modest, perhaps even more so given the amount of years.

I dunno why we have to give everyone 3 year minimum deals either, would have thought wed have learnt some lessons from Brown and TMac

I love ANB, just share some of the same thoughts of LDN.

No doubt he's not being paid much. But you only have so many list spots and it's very questionable ANB will be best 22 in 2026, so why crystal ball three years ahead and lock him in now?

He obviously didn't want to go home to SA if he's signed a three year deal and neither of the SA clubs were going to come through with a mega deal for him to tempt him away.

I find it hard to believe that anyone without a pre-existing bias against ANB would think he would go from best 22 to wasting a list spot for the sake of it within 3 years. As mentioned in my comment above, I'm sure his contract reflects the expectations of his spot, but "crystal balling" that we'd rather have a VFL level rookie in his spot in 3 years is a far more silly thought than thinking he'll be worth a list spot in that time. Having a contract doesn't mean you have to be best 22 or it's a waste, we'd had 20+ players in that position if that made any sense at all.

That's "obviously" purely your opinion. My opinion is clearly contract security would be a factor in deciding where you wanted to play. No one suggested a "mega deal" of any sort, and frankly I find that kind of commentary where you insert extremes and absurdities not helpful to your argument.

Always a bit funny to see how people can only see contracts in black and white terms and don't (or can't be bothered to) understand everything around them.

You've gone off way early on Brown.

Brown was never touted to be a high draft prospect. He was always touted to be a 2nd round pick or at worst mid 3rd. Have watched a few Oakleigh games this year and clubs have put a tag on him because of his ability to be damaging with his speed and ball use.

He was BOG for Vic Country B team trial match over the weekend where a stack of AFL recruiters were watching.
gone off way early? what do you mean? I'm not saying he was a first rounder but he was touted as a top 25 prospect. Now he's looking to be around 50. He's getting massively outplayed by a couple of underaged kids in his own team which doesn't bode well surely?

and I'm not sure what you mean by ball use? His kicking is the main weakness/knock on his game. He's worse than his old man in terms of foot skills. It's awkward. We must be watching a different kid.lol

You find it hard to believe that a role player in 2023 might not be worth a list spot in 2026? Thank god you're not our list manager then.

And why would the only alternative to ANB in 2026 be a "VFL level rookie"? Are you unfamiliar with the trade period?

To cap off an extremely stupid post by you, of course it is obvious that if you sign a 3 year deal for Melbourne you weren't motivated to go home to South Australia.

Our list manager who just signed him until then? Alrighty.

Because you're using the logic the ANB in 2026 would not even be worth a list spot, no matter what the contract details are. Obviously saying he's not worth a list spot means he's worth less than the last person on our list. Logic.

Wrong again. Having the contract certainty of course is a factor when weighing up your future employment. Going home to SA would surely have been tempting, but knowing your job is safe for 3 years would absolutely make a difference. I mean honestly, to try and infer that the Dees should have thought "Well, let's offer Nibs 1 or 2 years, it's not like anyone else would want him! Hahahaha!" is completely stupid.

Just fess up and say you don't like him because your lack of logic is transparent.

You've made a huge leap of logic. Saying that it is unnecessary to offer him three years isn't a personal slight on him, it's a statement that you shouldn't offer someone longer than 2 years unless you're damn sure they are going to be a wanted player in the final year of that contract.

A more sensible approach would be to offer him 1 or 2 year deal with triggers for additional years based on games played.

You're undermining your own point by saying that the job security of a 3 year deal would make him stay at Melbourne rather than go home to SA. You're acknowledging that there's no guarantee he'd be worth a contract renewal for 2026.

Right, so just offer your hardest workers and leadership group players short; incentive-based contracts. Sounds like a culture building plan...

We're not going to meet in the middle on this one it seems, let's save everyone else the kilobytes, have a good one mate.

You play in a flag at the Melbourne Demons you get an extra year tacked onto your next contract.
Seems fair to me.
ANB gets a 2 year contract + one bonus year for being a ****ing legend.

Happy with that. :thumbsu:
Onya Nibbler!

Great clubman, premiership player, solid role player. Still only 27. Still in our top 3 runners at the club. I actually think he's been solid this season so far. I'm ok with 3 years. Hopefully we have a couple blokes pushing his spot in the next season or two, but ANB has been in the leadership group, so obviously brings more to the table than some. Just waiting for Koz to sign now!

Because as always you read far too many bigfooty phantom drafts written by nerds that either make it up without even watching the games or copy of other people's content.

Even if he does sneak out of the 40 then he'll still be a good great pick up for us. He's about to play for Vic Country in the up and coming national championships, Co-Captain of Oakleigh Chargers and he's got a great balance of playing inside and out as a midfield. Something we actually lack on our list.

Nah, his kicking and disposal skills is the absolute least of his worries LOL

It's probably one too many but I reckon even if he falls out of the best 22, an SA club would take him for a nothing pick. Be surprised if he's on much at all.

Probably gets the extra year for being the 'clubman' 'hardest worker's type, he's probably the type of kid who you'd be happy to play 2s and teach standards and shit to etc

Absolutely, no new players will come to the club for 3 years

I get that, but not everyone pans out.

Look at Bailey Laurie. We burned a first round pick and all we got is a 3rd year player who has not been able to cement his spot.

Maybe he just needs another 3 years of seasoning!

AnB looks like the classic player who's done at 28 though. Only thing he has that stands out is work rate and you can't hide him on the field. I like the kid but if he even loses half a step he'll go from best 22 to battler really fast

i've seen him play like 5 times live. plus I saw him 2 times when he was training at Melbourne. He's a horrific ball user but he plays with good intensity.
