I mean the good news about pick 1 to Norf is that it probably kills off the chance of first round compo for McKay. They could kind of get away with it with 2+3, but 1+2 given the doldrums WC are in is ridiculous.

Reckon it would be more likely now they get 2nd round compo and a mid first priority pick at 10ish. Will probably depend if they are allowed to steal Sanders or not.

Not a chance Walter slips through to pick 8.

Typo,

GCs current picks are worth 4683 points.

Matching bids at 2 (Walter) 7 (Read) 13 (Rogers) and 30 (Graham) requires about 4800

Deficit of approx 117 points. And that’s if WC take Walter over Curtin at 2 which is unlikely.

They won’t offload pick 4/5 to us for some dinky other picks to make that up, they are better moving into 2024 first round. Hawks/North F1st is what I would eye off.

Pick 1 by no means locked up for North unless they obviously go the tank this weekend. Beating Suns at Blundstone not out if the question given some of the funny late season results we’re seeing.

Also in truth, getting picks 2 & 3 in this draft could potentially be better than getting Reid (1) and say pick 20 compo for B.McKay. Who’s to say Reid doesn’t turn out to be more Cam Rayner than Dusty?

I very much doubt the AFL gives North pick 2 if they end up with the No.1 pick, especially if as others have pointed out doing so would hurt West Coast.

Caddy was BOG as his Knights team upset a nearly full strength, top of the table Dragons outfit. He was especially dominant in a first half in which Northern were rampant, surging out to a big lead. Unfortunately, his kicking on goal was rather wayward as he managed only 4.3 with 2 more out on the full.

Has Caddy ever played as a defender? He's very physical and looks to be a great contested mark but so far I haven't seen much that screams natural forward.

I haven't seen him play in defense. For me I think he very much is a natural forward. He takes a lot of marks on the lead, and he takes them using a diverse set of leading patterns (straight at the carrier, lateral angles, fake leads and releads etc). He creates nice separation on the lead and has the awareness of space and when to be patient to wait for something to open up.

He's also a very nice contested mark. He can take them with 1v1 body/strength work, and he can take them with athleticism jumping at packs. He also seems to be willing to hit the pack hard and doesnt shy away from the contact, although I wouldnt say he quite has Jed Walters masochistic enjoyment of pain.

Fair enough. I guess most of what I've seen is the 1v1s he's had rather than the leads. This clip was still the most impressed I've been with him especially with how strong in the contest he is.

I would be surprised if we were keen on him though as he'd be our third undersized key forward picked in as many years.

Yep I can see that. There would be a fair amount of skill set overlap between Caddy and Van Rooyen.

Although, having 2x Van Rooyen's in the forward line wouldn't be the worst thing in the world so long as they can figure out how to compliment each other.

I think if Jefferson came on we'd definitely look to move one of them into the backline as a May replacement. JVR played some time as a defender as a junior I believe.

‘Undersized key position player’ can be a misleading blanket term imo. Give me a 193-194cm guy with ability and x-factor over a vanilla 196-198cm tall.

Charlie Curnow is 194cm. Steven May 193cm. Jake Stringer during his peak ‘Package’ era 192cm. If you can play you can play. Couple of cm’s isn’t going to stop you.

Weid and Watts were 196/197cm flops.

If anything, having a slightly lower centre of gravity brings you into the play when the ball hits the deck, which is often in today’s chaos ball footy. Tall lanky types are also more prone to shanking the pill on a set shot.

It doesn't really bother me either, more of the fact that we'd be taking a third player of that same build with our first pick in three consecutive drafts.

Personally prefer a midfieler or key defender.

Agree. He would make half the teams in the comp better if he was in their side. He just doesn't fit our structure.
This is what I was concerned about this time last year, re Grundy.

That we needed insurance/cover for Maxy... and a replacement for lJackson... but Grundy is too lumbering for this cover.

This is why I like Archer Reid in the draft 203 cms forward/ruck who is very mobile, and balanced with nice foot skills and a good decision maker.
I think he could develop really well, IF he has the right mindset. Hard enough, and determined enough.? Like any kid should.

Apparently the Swans as well.

We will see if they offer anything good, or if they are only sniffing round coz they smell a bargain and Hickey isn't coming back, ive got a feeling its the later.

I hope Norf gets a priority pick or Band 1 compo so they take Reid and Curtin. I just want to watch the Weagles fans have a meltdown.
I don't think they will now. as I sniff an AFL suggestion to both bottom 2 teams, that culminated in a circumstance; whereby no pick swaps are now necessary... let alone a pick3 compensation for Ben McKay.

Very neat and tidy for the AFL, after this weekends results have sorted the ladder in favour of an un-compromised draft 1st Rnd. Weird how that happens.

But watch how North find something of an early Xmas present, for the start of Rnd2.

Yeah, it's already a fail. We didn't go in thinking we would flip him for a better deal down the track like he's a share on the stock market.
The "fail" is, we helped the Pies out of a huge Salary cap headache. And now we helped them they are up on top of the AFL ladder.

How do we get both picks or are you meaning either Pick 4 and 5?
It’s been talked about that GCs first pick is on the market so that they can build up enough points to match bids on their 3 first round academy kids.

We are as well placed as anyone to get it, and if we are lucky then we would have both picks 4 and 5.

They have 4683 points and that includes their current pick 4 which is 2034 points.

If they trade it for a first next year they’ll lose 2034 points and still have to gain 2151 points with dinky picks this year, which currently North and Hawks don’t have another 2000 points to give up (not including pick 1 and 3). North could get it with compensation picks but Hawks are no where near it.

North would have to find 2151 points this year and give up their first next year (which is likely top 4). North would be wanting more back.

Dees have the points Gold Coast need, and something like our 1st for their 2nd next year could get it done.

How are we well placed? GC don’t need points in 2023 (they are only ~200 in deficit for 4 academy kids) and our future first is likely going to be worse than at least 15 other clubs.

if GC are trading their 1st rounder for a 1st rounder next year, which of those 15 clubs have 2000 points to give GC this year?

Playing deep forward, Harley started this game very well taking marks and kicking goals. Unfortunately his game ended early when he seemed to pick up a knee injury early in the second quarter. Here's hoping its nothing serious.
