Not really. Can only trade him to whichever club he nominates.

‘Nominee’ club far less likely to lowball knowing other clubs are interested.

It’s unlikely to happen but the lever to deny Grundy a trade based on sh1tty compensation is also there for us.

As Kane Cornes keeps saying - “ ‘worst case’ for Melbourne is they keep a very good first ruck on the list in case 32yo Gawn goes down”.

Of course it does. All parties still have to agree to the trade. There's no risk of Grundy walking for nothing like an OOC player. If a club isn't serious and try to bend us over we're in a position to tell them to GAGF, also pisses players off when their nominated club tries to play funny buggers. Not saying we'll get anything amazing but I certainly don't think we'll be paying much of if any of his salary without something decent coming back.

There are some oppo supporters really tying themselves up in knots with the 4 years at 650k. Considering he’s playing VFL. That’s actually pretty cheap for a ruck of his quality. And everyone knows he’s only playing VFL due to Gawn and neither of them are effective forwards.

With their duffle coats on all they see is an opposition player who got dropped multiple times this season. Rival footy departments will understand his real value.

Or not trade him at all, if the nominated club is clearly offering less than the market has determined.
This is what the opposition supporter don’t get, or choose not to get. Funnily enough they tend to be the opposition supporters of the clubs who could benefit from having Grundy…

Average wage is 400k. Melbourne paying 650k for a backup. Melbourne trade Grundy and then need to trade (or maybe free agent) another backup ruck and pay them probably 250-350k.

Net saving for Melbourne of 3-400k.

“But Melbourne need to free up cap room for a big free agent, or for a trade!! They will want to get rid of Grundy, AND pay some of his salary!”

Like who? Who is this awesome player that fills Melbourne’s needs, is gettable, and comes for 3-400k? It’s nobody, they don’t exist.

If Melbourne are supposedly paying some of Grundy’s salary it gets even more absurd as the saving will be 1-200k or whatever.

Melbourne doing nothing is still a very comfortable outcome for Melbourne.

Yep.

Unless we need to salary dump, then we aren’t under any pressure to do anything that doesn’t suit us.

Fully expect us to make a massive play for Reid now. They were hinting at it OTC earlier in the week. Reid toured our facilities this week Jon Ralph heavily implied we had met with him on Monday. Reckon we've been in conversations with West Coast for a while.

He will cost too much.

Would rather keep picks 4 & 5 if that’s what we end up with. They’ll probably ask for even more than that.

Maybe. There are a lot of murmurings about this so fully expect us to make a play. Have a feeling as long as they make sure they get Curtin and something on top they'll be happy.

You’d want to be 90% sure Reid is going to become a generational player. Huge call. Massive call.

Yeah, I'm on the fence about the cost but back us in to do the right thing by the club. Trading up like this has always been our wheelhouse.

Would be hugely exciting for the club to pull off a coup like that.

Or would the better coup be to have a Port Adelaide style ‘Rozee AND Butters’ result? Hard to go past that no matter how good the lone No.1 pick is.

Depends who the club rates. If Curtin, Durrsma and McKercher are all going to be gone anyway I'm pretty meh on the next group.

Yeah the whole Reid touring the club is pretty wild.

Usually these sorts of deals are worked out well in advance before the trade period. It'll be a concern how much we have to give up, but agree it'll be bloody exciting.

Harley Reid is doing a meet & greet with MFC today - Not that it seems to matter now after the weekend's results.

Surely North just tell WCE that they rate Curtain at pick 2, which puts an end to dealing with anyone except North.

I would probably rather keep 4 and 5 (if we get it) than go for 1 as well.

Not sure, depends who is available. If it was Reid vs McKercher and Watson I think id rather Reid just.

Tough call.

We have a few inside bulls on the list for a while yet.

Think I’d rather a McKercher Watson/Duursma combo which de-risks things a bit too, just in case Reid ends up injury prone or not as good as hoped.

It's an interesting conundrum, but with our current picks, I don't imagine we'll have access to any of Duursma/McKercher/Watson/Curtin anyway.

Likely before our pick:

1 - Reid (WCE)
2 - Walter (GC match)
3 - Curtin (North)
4 - McKercher/Duursma (North). They absolutely shouldn't get the pick, but the AFL will find a way
5 - Duursma/McKercher (Hawthorn)
6 - Watson (whoever trades for the GC pick)

Throw in the possibility of Sanders getting nominated as an academy pick for North, and all of a sudden our prime pick 5 could end up coming in at 8.

Over this academy/compo nonsense.

Yeah. This is the concern. Missing out on one of the primo midfielders.

Watson worries me.
