Don’t know what Barass’ leadership skills are like.

If he’s a good leader and teacher WC should probably keep him around (if he wants to stay).

If he’s just one of those good players that doesn’t bring much else then they should offload him if they can get a decent pick.

They can’t argue he helps their competitiveness when he played in the 171 loss to Sydney and the 108 loss to Carlton.

I can’t see Melbourne getting him although it would be nice.
Why not?

GWS looking to salary dump Whitfield- no way we'd have the salary to cop him but how boss would it be to grab him, nab another early-ish pick then ship our hand off for Harley Reid. A man can dream.
No thanks, puts us into the same problems that GWS are trying to escape from.
Whitfield would be an excellent acquisition. Essentially an upgrade on Hunter but would also slot in nicely off a half back flank. Reckon he’d relish a few seasons playing regular footy on the wider expanses of the G not to mention in front of actual footy crowds.
No thanks.

The player I've been interested in since his draft year, is Lachie Ash.

He would help to transition us into a more attacking team, as the AFL style opens up further. Good run&carry with speed and skills. Helping to transition.

I like Ash a lot.

I like Ash too. Has he been playing as a mid this year or still at halfback? We probably don't need another mid-sized defender, as good as Ash is, but if he's a speedy mid we should be targeting him.

I think we definitely need mid sized defenders who can defend. Rivers Salem and Brayshaw are all more attacking when Hibberd doesn't play our back 6 looks way worse.

Yeah I mean we need all sorts of players tbh. Just think midsize defenders would be lower on my priority list, especially one who'd cost a lot in a trade like Ash (if he is a defender still).

Ash is a bit more rebounding right? We need intercept defenders guys who can beat a man first. I think everyone says how poor our kicking is but I think we have too many 'good' kicks in our back half if anything. Rivers, Salem, Bowey, McVee etc. We need a mid sized who can mark tall because that generates good rebound. Rebounding from ground balls is alot harder and Lever is a bit one out in going for marks

100% we need to go all in for a solid KPF.

It's a no brainer!
Absolutely not as simple as that. Who would be gettable? And if we throw 2 first picks for someone that would be 4 first round picks in a row on key forwards which would be incredibly dumb list management considering we have 0 KPD depth, 0 midfield depth and a list with its key pieces aging.

Agree. If we can get Ben King, sure, but there's not a lot else out there.

Be stupid to get king. Wed need to plow 2 high first rounders into him. Pay him a million and then make either JVR or Jefferson useless which would be another wasted first. All for a guy who will probably kick 40 odd goals in our forward line.

Tom Doedee would be an option. FA and now done a knee, but plays in the Hibberd mould.

Nah, King would be generational. Free up JVR to play CHF, we don't even know if Jefferson will make it. Could be another Weid. I'd happily give 2 first-rounders for King, and some.

Not sure you understand the meaning of generational. Kings a good forward in a league full of average key forwards. Gold coast have literally sucked his whole career so he's not gonna make that much of a difference

One of the top players, in his position, of a generation. He absolutely could - and should - be that.

Meh a bloke who will at best average around 2 goals a game and 2 contested marks a game isn't worth burning down our future over especially when we've already used two first rounders on Jefferson and JVR. 5 years without a high end midfielder coming through would be exactly how a club burns a premiership window down to become a cellar dweller

Yeah I’m with TK here. Unless we go all in for Harley Reid or we can get an elite talent mid under 25 in a trade we shouldn’t be moving those picks.
If Harley is gettable then I’d go for it, but otherwise let’s bring in a decent young crop with our first 4 picks.

We don’t even need a gun key forward we need someone that isn’t as old and slow as Tom and Ben and someone that will compete and help JVR and Jefferson moving forward.

I can’t see Melbourne getting Barras for several reasons.

Other clubs will want him more and offer up more to Barrass and West Coast. Sydney have been supposedly into him for years.

A 28 year old key defender isn’t an immediate need. They’d be hoping May has another couple of good years and Lever plenty of years left.

Melbourne would probably prefer to do something else with a pick in the 6-10 range which they hopefully get from Freo’s 2023 first rounder. Try to package it up with Melboirne’s natural first which is hopefully high teens and next year’s first to move higher again in this draft.

If other plans fell through and Barrass somehow fell into Melbourne’s lap, sure, but I just don’t see it happening.

I like Ash a lot.
This is why I think GWS are trying to off-load salary cap space.
So they can right their past wrongs, paying too much for a few. eg Kelly Whitfield, etc.

I reckon Ash is the equal of Whitfield, without having been spoilt by big money over form.

Some might say we have a lot of halfback flankers, but from what I see, not much in the take it on, run-and-carry, with the foot skills and hardness.

IF, he was interested to get to Mfc, then we definitely should be having a chat with his manager.

We opened a trade window with GWS last year. Lets chat to Ash's management, and see where we get to.

I think we need a bit more dashing footy. Not to chuck out our defensive method, but to rebound with some flair.

I'd say McVee, Bowey and Salem all have foot skills and hardness. Rivers has hardness, foot skills a bit all over the place.

Perceived lack of run and carry is more a game style thing IMO, all of the above could do that, particularly McVee and Rivers.

There's also Hibberd, who seems likely to retire but you never know, and Howes who should get a game any week really.

Reckon we're ok for half back flankers tbh.
