Interesting article. They rate us, along with North Melbourne, as the two clubs in strongest position to trade with West Coast for Harley Reid/Pick 1.

North committing absolute daylight robbery though if they receive first round compensation for Ben McKay, which would effectively mean they receive pick 3 for him. He’s barely worth a second rounder let alone a pick that high.

AFL will make it happen though because Norf are a basket case. I reckon they'll end up with Reid tbh. WC would be crazy to keep that first pick now.

Pick 3 for McKay would just be the AFL laundering a pp for North. If McKay stays they'd probably get the pick anyway.

Yeah! What sort of club would accept pick 3 for a departing free agent key defender! ;)
Yes the Frawley comparison is obvious. I've made it before.

Longish bow.

Frawley was a much better player in his prime than Ben McKay is now. Probably not worth the compo pick we got (3) but conceivably was worth a mid first rounder at the time.

McKay a textbook case of “brother’s good and they look alike so he must be as well”. He’s a bog standard key defender with no pace or tricks.

McKay is gonna get paid handsomely only because most teams have a need for a KPD and there is a huge dearth of talent on the market this year (Himmelberg excepted).
Plus free agents are always a bit more attractive and have more suitors to drive up price because the acquiring team doesn’t give up any draft picks or players to get them.

I'm still in the 'don't sell the farm for Reid' camp. Maybe I'm scarred by Scully and Watts (not to mention so many other No.1s) but the first pick is rarely the best.

Much prefer taking too prospects at say picks 5 and 18 (🤞).

Reckon it's win win tbh. From a player-type perspective I love the idea of having Reid playing as a tough, quick, goal-kicking high half forward for us. Would fit in perfectly for us and the combo of him and Trac mixing it up through hf/midfield adds some explosiveness to our front half and perhaps takes some pressure off our key forward stocks.

First pick is rarely the best when it goes to dog shit teams with no standards. Last 3 going to contending teams have all looked like jets

Still keen to see what we can shake from GC in terms of Holland/Flanders, but the latter might be playing his way into a new deal.
