Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. It's not even a theory. it's fact. Grundy was told that he would be the main ruckman and Gawn would be playing more time forward. It never eventuated not even in pre-season.

So youre upset for Grundy and you'd rather Goodwin sat on his hands and did nothing while the season slipped away coz the forward line was a dysfunctional mess. What a loser mentality. To be a winner you have to make the tough calls. Im glad youre not in charge.

ok but if this is the case, why did the club lie to him?

All clubs pursuing a player will sell their case. Reality is of that doesn’t work out the club is not obligated to follow through. Melbourne no doubt realised Gawn as a majority ruck is our best option. And I think Grundy will struggle to play come finals as we have found a better mix. He may get a chance before finals. But I can only see it as a preservation tactic for Gawn.

We panicked when Dogga left. Grundy was gettable. We got him. Goody thought he could turn one of them into a half decent forward, it hasn't worked. He's realised Gawn is clearly better. Grundy bides his time in VFL. He'll be gone end of season. We'll get a 2nd round pick and move on. No harm in trying, but Gawn is clearly a better ruckman when he takes the bulk of the ruck with a pinch hitter. We're starting to see the benefit of Dogga. Hard to replace.

If we turf Grundy maybe we go after Hayden McLean or Jack Silvagni? That Nick Bryan (?) guy from the Dons played a pretty good game and was behind Draper and Phillips.

There's always some young ruck that has shown a bit in the VFL you can lie to and lure over ;)

Although I don't think Grundy is 100% gone. I think that will depend on Tmac/BBB contracts and what experienced KPP we can bring in to replace them if they retire.

Why would we need to bring in an experienced KPP to replace two reserve players?
JVR and Petty are the future, we still have Jefferson in the reserves and Smith as another back up. Why bring someone in to take JVRs place anyway.
That's forgetting Schache also exists

Smith is injury prone and just as likely to end up down back.

I'm not saying don't play JVR and Petty - I'm saying we need an experienced body on the list if Tmac and BBB go. Melk also possibly gone.

You're saying we should go into 2024 with possibly Grundy, Melk, BBB and Tmac out but no experienced KPP in?

Schache is a 2 metre flanker. I think for list balance we will need someone mature coming in. Also gives us flexibility to swing Petty back.

Why do we need some experienced plonker to sit in the reserves for the sake of it? Where the hell do we find random experienced key forward that isn't completely shit, but we aren't paying 600k and a first rounder to to play reserves?
May aswell keep Tmac and Brown then cause it's just a wasted list spot and money

An to be clear yeah I am saying we don't need one. If Tmac was fit Casey would have a forward line of Brown, Tmac, Grundy and Jefferson. That's ****ing stupid. Our midfield depth needs work because we have 2 KPFs over 30 playing reserves which no other team is dumb enough to do. Why we'd fix that and then feel the need to go and get another crap one is beyond me

I literally just put forward 2 names that would be gettable and wouldn't cost the earth.

It's called depth mate. R1 2024 comes and Petty does his knee it's looking pretty bleak.

Young KPP can have form slumps, its good to have someone other than a first or second year player putting pressure on their spot in the team.

Someone like Pederson would be perfect and there's been plenty of similar players change hands in recent years.

It's called JVR and Fritsch mate, Petty does his knee it's not gonna be the difference winning the flag because we got Jack Silvagni 😂

Hayden McLean will be in Sydneys best team now that Buddy has retired so that's a useless shout, why would he come to be play reserves for us on the hope someone does an ACL

Try again mate.

Melksham is literally our mature depth up forward and he's playing in and winning us games with Fritsch out.

Cool, so in your scenario Fritsch and JVR are our key forwards with Petty out. Now Gawn is off the ground and JVR second rucks. Now it's Fritsch and...Schache?

Why can't the difference between a competent mature key forward and Schache win us games of footy?

I'll give you a Chris Scott mug if we lose all those KPP and only bring in 18 year olds.

I don't think we need a KPF if Grundy goes but we should trade for a solid ruck back-up. Someone who can hold his own if Gawn goes down and then can be the lead option for the No.1 role when Max retires.

I just don't think anyone decent sits behind Gawn. Think it's a case of wait till he retires then pluck the best reserves ruck we can find and play them. Works for everyone else.

Not just me. Damian Barrett, Lloyd and Buckley all agree. The fact that you don't think its true is mind boggling to me. Grundy was sold a vision that never even got off the ground.
Damian Barrett? ****ing lol

The issue is anyone who can be the lead guy wont want to play magoo's waiting for Gawn to retire. Just get some bog average mule and punt worrying about a proper #1 ruck a few years down the road when Gawn does actually retire.

Similar to what Geelong did getting Ceglar as a backup, someone like that is fine.

We should also keep in mind we’ve actually got an excellent record of developing rucks, I’m confident they can identify a Gawn successor in the next couple years. In the meantime as you say doesn’t matter if we have some plumber as ruck for a couple years.

Verrall showing some good signs in the VFL. He could develop.
