So, do the two first-rounders we get as compensation for Jordan Jones come after the Freo pick, or our own pick?

Not sure Mick McGuane is overly clued in on this type of stuff but in his potential trade targets list today he had Harrison Jones from Essendon listed. Can't say I've closely followed him but he was highly rated and looked good before this year. Wonder what they'd want for him? We'll need some more tall options on the list to replace Brown, Tmac, Grundy and hopefully Schache.
I can act as the Essendon representative. Given he was only pick 30 (from memory) and hasn't exactly set the world on fire, I can't imagine we would be in a position to demand much for him. But at the same time, we're also in desperate need of key forward talent so it would be a strange call for us to let him go unless he demands a move.

Imagine winning the 2023 flag then sitting our arses at the draft table with selections 4 & 5 to add to our list. Rival clubs and supporters will have a collective hernia.
Talking this way just prior to the 23 finals run, sounds a bit presumptuous, and a bit Arrogant. Just a bit over the top.
We need to pull our heads in, IF e think like that.

Or we will have our medicine dished up to us.

I'm after Sanders only so we can call him "the Colonel" and scream out "Did somebody say KFC?!!?" every time he takes a mark.
We'd have to have KFC as a sponsor though who I think sponsor both Richmond and Collingwood? Which is a bit weird. I'd want an exclusive KFC sponsorship I don't want to share with minnows.

Used to work with a bloke named Sanders, yep, he was called Colonel by everyone.

Smart, drive up the price by saying you'll match anything. Try and make some pay a stupid amount so you get the high compo pick.
Such an easy bluff to call though. If I'm one of those clubs I'd offer $600k at absolute most and if North match, he's barely worth a second rounder on the open market. McKay doesn't have to stay.

We've been torn apart for having a $650k player who can't get on the park. Mckay would be the same thing except he'd be injured all the time rather than not being picked. Would be madness to pay him $800k.

Indeed. Please have a strong word with the players after training this week.

Thanks. Yeah didn’t make a lot of sense to me why you guys would trade him unless he wants out. At his age I’d happily take him for a pick in the 30s and see if he comes on, but couldn’t offer any more than that.

We got first round compo for Frawley but he was an AA and pretty durable from memory.

Ben Mckay is a spud. Zero footy instincts and too dumb to play in a proper zone. Had some decent games due to the sheer amount of ball that was coming his way and his height/athleticism allowed him to take some grabs.

He was AA 4 years before he left. He was bog average after that; Tmac and Dunn went past him.

The year he left he finished 8th in the BnF count on a 4-win team.

Melbourne getting the priority pick was just charity from the AFL to help with the rebuild. And Norf will get the same treatment

I'd look at Harrison Jones if we can't get Georgiades. Interesting to see Jay Clark again mention us in the mix for Aaron Naughten next year. He's close to the club, and our interest in Naughten has been mentioned in dispatches for 18-24 months now. He's obviously an elite player, but we're not often linked with players so I think when there's smoke there's usually fire.

Weid’s inevitable break out year is coming, no need for Harrison Jones or any other tall forwards for that matter. It also makes room on the list for more flakey flankers.

The year he left we also made him play up forward in a completely garbage team.

I disagree that he was bog average, played some great footy as a stopper in some dominant Hawks teams. Was a great pickup for them.

Tmac was never a good defender and Dunn was an honest trier - no way Frawley was a worse defender than those 2.

Agreed. McKay has shown absolutely nothing to suggest a half decent contract. A club would be fn desperate if they offered him a lengthy contract on high $$. Would be mindboggling tbh.

I just don’t see us getting Naughton as it’d be such a big investment in terms of picks/salary and would also signal we don’t see Jefferson making it, and it’d send Petty down back again (FWIW I like petty more forward then back).

I don't think Naughton will leave the dogs.

I would love to have Naughton THOUGH he has not taken the next step just hovered around the same output level. Maybe a new club could help in that regard :)

Naughton can play back as well. So having Naughton/Petty/Smith that can rotate all over the place is fantastic. At some point (soonish a few years) May will need to be replaced as well.

Salary wise it should be ok as well, a few players are going to end up in 2024 and that will free up a fair bit of salary space as well.

Could be an amazing year for Melbourne Trade/Draft wise.

IF ...

Brodie Grundy isn't playing for this club next year

THEN ...

I will be very surprised. And wouldn't the Power love access to him right now as they push for a flag.

I was keen on a play for Naughton a few weeks ago as I think he’s one that can be shaken loose at the Dogs. They’ve over invested in their front half. Then Petty stepped up to the plate and showed he’s genuinely capable of a 40-50 goal season.

A JVR/Petty key forward combo is more than adequate with Jefferson developing and means we can inject quality youth from the draft onto the list. It’s a good position to be in.

Port’s first pick in the draft is 37. Seems unders unless they take on the full whack of his $650k salary and even then doesn’t feel quite enough.

Maybe Georgiades comes into play here although I’m not overly sold on him. 192cm makes him an undersized key forward who doesn’t appear to have any tricks at ground level. 65 goals in 48 games is underwhelming although his 2021 was okay (33 goals).

Would prefer a decent draft pick for Grundy tbh, more stock to use as points to entice the Suns/pick5 to deal with us.

Given Grundy will be recruited as a number one ruck surely no side will seriously kick up a fuss over he 650k salary. It’s quiet cheap for a player if his quality. No doubt clubs will try get us to pay something.

Hopefully it’s true that multiple clubs are interested. Would greatly enhance our bargaining leverage.
