Checked out when he went back to VFL, my tune has changed on Grundy. Doesn't seem like he wants to fight for his spot back, feels like he's cracked it and wants to go

They’ll get the Pick 3 compo. I’ve written this in one of the Phantom draft threads but I’m sensing a pretty clear AFL ‘secret sauce’ formula brewing here.

Without ever using the words “priority pick” they will seek to engineer an outcome whereby both basket case clubs get two pointy end draft picks each.

North will be told they’ll get McKay compo (3) and academy approval for Sanders (approx pick 8) on condition they trade picks 2 & 3 to the Eagles for pick 1 (Reid).

Result:

Eagles get Curtin (2) & McKercher (3)
North get Reid (1) & Sanders (8)

Eagles get their WA boy & best pure midfielder in the draft.
North get Vic boy No.1 pick and a third or fourth choice of the best mids.

Would put money on the AFL ‘creatively’ making it pan out like this. Other clubs won’t like it but it’s the fairest & most equitable way to handle it.

Unfortunately it’s going to mean McKercher & Duursma (Hawthorn) are off the table before our first pick. We will be looking at Watson, O’Sullivan, Caddy, this next tier of kids at our pick. This won’t change even if we move up to obtain the GC Pick ‘4’.

1. Reid (North)
2. Walter (GC bid)
3. Curtin (WC)
4. McKercher (WC)
5. Duursma (Haw)
6. (Whoever gets GC pick)
7. Melbourne
8. Sanders (North academy)

This then begs the question - is it actually worth Melbourne’s while to trade up for GC pick ‘4’ if the absolute cream of the draft has already gone before that pick? We will have to trust Jason Taylor to make that assessment.

Maybe a combination of Nick Watson (6) and Conor O’Sullivan (7) is still worth it?
Still worth it in my opinion.

Get the best possible talent in whilst we have a strong list. We might not get access to top picks for the next 3 or 4 years.

Good call.

You’re right with Tassie coming in and banking on more top four success with this group - double down while we can now.

Surely the AFL won’t try and get West Coast an extra pick. They’ve only spent 3 years not playing finals after a successful period that saw a premiership and another Grand Final appearance.

In what freaking world would the industry and fans accept North trading 2 & 3 for 1?

Doesn’t matter what other clubs or other club’s supporters think, the AFL will do what’s best for North & WC in order to have them competitive as quickly as possible. You can’t have clubs repeatedly wallowing in misery, skewing the competition and percentages year after year. It wrecks the product and hence the business.

WC
Out pick 1
In picks 2 & 3

North
Out picks 2 & 3
In picks 1 & 8 (AFL grants academy access to Sanders)

It’s a good and fair outcome for both.

FFS Gold Coast get concession after concession and no-one bats an eyelid. The AFL delivered us Angus Brayshaw when they didn’t really have to. They can help WC and North as far as I’m concerned no problem.

Very ordinary look by Grundy to do this before our finals run has even begun. What if Gawn goes down with an injury and he has to play?

Would rather not pick the campaigner now knowing he’s checked out and waltzing around Alberton. Was absolutely no need to do that until after the GF or until we are officially eliminated.

Respect level for Brodie just went 👇🏼

Is this even allowed during the season? Fairly certain there are rules on poaching opposition players directly during the season.

If these blokes want to come this hard for him surely we make them pay up with there F1.

It's allowed. Actual contract offers aren't though.

Pretty bad look in a finals campaign against a rival. FWIW I’d much rather take Reid on merit than Curtain and McKercher in some AFL manipulated deal. I can’t stand priority picks and if Dillon is as straight a shooter as everyone in the industry seems to think he is, he’ll abolish them for good.

Mate you've invented a conspiracy in your own head and are stating it like it's a fact. AFL aren't going to get involved in a trade between North and West Coast. If they wanted West Coast to have some extra help they'd just give it to them.

Remember Port kicking up a fuss when Geelong were chasing Boak. It's poor form.

Tinfoil stuff, sorry mate.

Didn't Lin Jong do similar and everyone kicked up a shit about it. Absolutely no need for it as of right now. Really bad look.

I'm pretty relaxed on player movement but its a s**t look to do it in a finals series. What if Gawn gets hurt, we lose and end up playing Port in a prelim?

FFS

It's honestly the type of crap where I wouldn't blame Goody for not picking Grundy if Gawn were to go down.

Why are we pretending players don't meet with clubs during the season? Grundy did it with us last year, as did Jackson with Freo. Lever did it with us just before Adelaide were playing finals too. Completely normal, even if it does seem unsavoury

In a finals series though?
It's during the week off – considering trade period starts only a week and a half after the GF, and players tend to be on leave at that point, I imagine it's fairly common practice.

Does it seem weird? Sure, but I don't think there's anything particularly untoward about it
