Even if it were 5 & 13 (which I don’t think it would be) how does that “obliterate our draft hand this year and next”?

Sure, it doesn’t touch next year but you’d hope our pick next year is worse than this years pick. Our midfield would be ****ed as it’d four first round picks in a row on KPFs (Plus it’d force Petty back).

Why would he cost more than pick 5?
Steven May cost pick 5.

Dogs could take the best young KPD in the draft at pick 5 (O’Sullivan). Would have clear appeal for them given their backline woes.
May was a year away from free agency and the Gold Coast had massive cap issues.

Think it would be at least 5+13 tbh.

And a second the year before that on Brown. And we wonder why we suddenly have no depth and quality ball users. Spending it all on KPFs with a game plan that doesnt even allow them to shine.

Also if Naughton leaves next year when OOC you’d think what they’d get would be close to pick 5 anyway, so you’d just hold onto him for an extra year and try convince him to stay.

I like the Naughton idea but don't want to sell the farm. So, prefer that we don't do it and use our picks to draft for other needs. Naughton isn't going to fix our game plan.

Aside from a few tweaks maybe our game plan doesn’t need as much wholesale changing as some are calling for.

Replace the rotting corpse of TMac with a decent key forward (ie Naughton) in either of the Collingwood or Carlton finals and we arguably win both games. Might even be celebrating another premiership today.

I wouldn’t sell the entire farm either but we’ve got to get serious about improving the forward line.

Jesus I’d almost be disappointed if we parted with 13 for Naughton - let alone 5 as well!
He would be our best KPP next year IMO, with May on the way down.

I'd do 5 & 13 in a heartbeat.

Naughton would be a great fit for us. We really need someone who can clunk a mark up forward. Would allow Petty to go back to defence also. Bulldogs have a heap of you key talls so he could be gettable.

They are also actively trying to improve their draft hand. Already making a play for GC pick 4, so the carrot of pick 5 may tempt them if they are looking at doing a mini-rebuild on the run with early picks.

The addition of pick 13 is something we’d have to weigh up. Maybe it’s a price worth paying if it provides the missing piece of the flag jigsaw.

Where?

I've found nothing that Jay Clark has related anything regarding Naughton and Melbourne.
Have heard mutliple references on radio & socials - this is over 18-24 months - as one team that are interested.

Quick google search gave me this:

Treloar’s situation is a relevant question because the Dogs face one of the biggest salary cap squeezes in the game trying to accommodate significant pay rises for tall trio – Naughton, English and Ugle-Hagan as well as keep Smith. They are all out of contract next year. West Coast would love English (who is a free agent next year), and Fremantle would gladly take Naughton (who is not a free agent). But you couldn’t discount Hawthorn, Richmond, St Kilda and Melbourne on Naughton either.

Not the best example but there have been a few - and also references to how he would fill a need etc. Jsut saying, sometimes with Jay-Z, when there's smoke there's fire.

Would Naughton even work in our game plan? His best asset is being able to run and jump at the ball and being unbeatable in the air.
Game plans can change. We were the highest scoring team in the league in 2018 when we had Hogan and TMac as forwards to kick to, made it to a prelim.

Getting someone like Naughton could allow the game plan to change where we move the ball ball quicker looking more direct inside 50.

If not, just bomb it long, that could work.

Yeah, I personally don't get the argument that going for a better key forward would be proof that we're going to continue playing the same way. Our game style is the result of us trying to cover for a weakness. We've shown we can change the way we play when we actually have capable forwards there.

That being said I don't think it's a very good excuse for our rigid gamestyle. We shouldn't need a gun key forward to justify moving the ball effectively.

totally agree we can move the ball quicker and more effective without trading in a gun key forward.

I’d be ok with Naughton but after taking key forwards with our last 2 first round picks I’d prefer we use them in a different area

I think we need to add something there especially with question marks over Petty's foot. Just someone who is in front of Tmac and Brown in the pecking order. Don't need to go for someone who will cost two firsts though. We have other list needs too.

IF we got Naughton and IF Petty's foot recovers, I'd rather keep Petty forward and play Naughton back.

Petty isn't as spectacular as Naughton but has shown he can take grabs. What he's got over Naughton in a significant way is the ability to convert.

Playing Naughton back further strengthens our intercept game so we don't have to rely on the same two blokes to be positioned for the intercept. Hopefully this means we can play faster and riskier with the ball in hand.
